December 20, 2009 - Msg 76762: Well so far, we have 13 inches of that blasted stuff I'm more than willing to share. Thankfully it melted a little today back down to below freezing tonight with more snow blowing around out there. They are calling for it again Thursday through Friday, so it's looking promising for a white Christmas. Looking forward to the party for Spot. I was thinking about wearing earrings but thought it might be to much. Hope everybody stays warm tonight--Salty Dog

December 20, 2009 - Msg 76763: Wow! Good frosty morning to you all. It's 31 degrees here, absolutely no wind, and clear skies. There is a rime of frost on the grass, and a sleepy-looking squirrel is poking his nose out of one of the squirrel boxes. My grass is still green, thanks to the fescue we planted. Beneath that, the St. Augustine is mostly brown. In the spring, they'll change places, with the fescue turning brown and the St. Augustine greening up and poking it's way to the top. The fescue will die completely by summer and will compost, enriching the soil. Between that process, and the application of cornmeal and dry molasses, I never, ever apply commercial chemical fertilizer. I love it!

Well, time to get ready for preaching. Toye Starr already smells a rat, and is making herself scarce. No telling where she'll hide, trying to keep me from leaving. If I spot her, I'll nab her and close her up in the bedroom with me until I'm ready to leave. If I don't, then I'll have to hunt her down, the little pill. She has made me late to things more than once. Gonna have to start rounding her up earlier in the game.

Be blessed, everyone! Now where did I put those Christmas earrings? --Romeena

December 20, 2009 - Msg 76764: Boy,what a party! I think my favorite part was seeing Spot open up all those gifts we got him- bottle of Geritol, the Metamucil, arthritis ointment, and all of that other stuff. Hope he made it home ok- I'm not sure how many miles per gallon that gasoline powered wheelchair we gave him gets-he might still be on the road! Guess I'll look for him on my way to church this morning.

For those of you that didn't make the party- you should've seen Big Maude & Asa doing the mashed potato!

Y'all have a good Sunday-love to all!

I am up driking a little coffee but feeling under the weather. I think I picked up a little virus...not a bad one but just bad enough to make me feel yucky. I had chills yesterday evening but no fever..wierd. Stomach is a little upset and I have a headache. Think I will skip preachin' this morning and get some more rest. I hate to miss but I think I need to stay home.

December 20, 2009 - Msg 76767: Howdy! Just got home from preachin', and sure am glad I went. We had two Muslim women visiting in our Sunday School class. They used to come to our Internationals outreach that meets on Wednesday mornings, but haven't attended in a while. Now suddenly they show up! Sounds like a "God thing" to me.

Boo, I was correcting my "it's" vs "its" error. You know how I am about stray apostrophes. I hope you're feeling better by now - this is no time to be coming down sick!

Well, since yesterday's "little nap" turned into a "big nap", I guess I'd better go wrap packages and make cookies. Then I have to work tonight. Also have to work tomorrow night, which means I have to miss my Sunday School class Christmas party at our teacher's house. Believe me, there are times when my job seriously interferes with my life.

Be blessed, friends. --Romeena

December 20, 2009 - Msg 76772: Good Sunday evening porch folks, we are shoveling out of the snow storm that hit my end of the porch on Friday. We got about 5-6 inches of snow, quite a bit for us. lost power and water for 2 days. ended up spening 1 night in a hotel as we were really cold and had no way to 'flush". Came home this am to power but still no water all day.
We went to church to the Christmas music program and came home to running water. I realize we are pretty spoiled with all these modern conveniences.

So sorry about Otis SPOT.
Happy Birthday to you. Your card is in the mail may be a bit late due to the snow and all but it will get there.

My son's birthday is tomorrow... he turns 19.
Happy Birthday Patrick!

Better get off here and get to work catching up the wash.

December 21, 2009 - Msg 76778: Good foggy Monday morning all. Had to crawl in on my drive to work because of dense fog. Boy I dislike driving in that stuff.

Spot, I'm so sorry to read about your Otis. I know how hard it is to lose a loved friend. Prayers for you buddy.

Sounds like an adventure Big Maude. Glad you got power back. And Happy Birthday to Patrick. They grow up quick.

Hey to Peggy. Where you been? I thought maybe you ran off with that hungry buzzaed Don. Wouldn't you know his name would be Don. :)

Lot's of upsets yesterday in the NFL. Keeps things fun for this late in the season I reckon.

Has anyone seen the Nativity Story? Pretty good movie. I didn't think hollyweird could produce anything that good anymore. Well worth adding to your DVD list if you haven't seen it.

Well it's a short week for me so I better get some things done. I work up to and including Wed. then am off until the new year.

Y'all behave now. (you to possum)

December 21, 2009 - Msg 76779: Oh, my! Oh, Spot, I hate to hear about Otis. I know you loved him, and I know your heart is broken. There are tears on my keyboard right now, and I'm praying for you. I fully understand how much it hurts to lose a beloved furry friend. I am so sorry.

The only counsel I would offer is this - don't let too much time go by before you find another friend. Not to replace Otis, because that can't be done, but to make a new place in your heart, and to bring you laughter and fun and help you heal. Somewhere, there's another loving pup who would just be thrilled to be your buddy and make you happy, and who needs a forever home. Go for it, go and find him. Not today, but soon.

Be blessed. --Romeena

December 21, 2009 - Msg 76780: Good morning everyone. Hope y'all are well. We got dumped on with about two feet of snow on Saturday and Sunday morning. I'm tired of shoveling but still have some walk-clearing to do here at work. Since I'm now the only male on staff, this kind of stuff seems to get left for me to take the lead. Wonder if Gloria Steinhem would be out there shoveling with me ;-)?

In case I don't talk to ya'll before, have a blessed Christmas. As Andy Williams says, it's the most wonderful time of the year!

December 21, 2009 - Msg 76782: Good Morning porch family,

I am still recovering from my week end adventure and that wild birthday party at O'Malleys. Getting too old for such goings on! Sure did have fun though.

Hope all is well this morning. Made it to work okay today, probably will work till about 4 today. I am guessing it will be quite around here. Many folks are still without power and water.

Good to see you M-T. I sure do miss you. try and come around more often.

Lunch menu will be: BBQ sandwhiches, SLAW, broasted poratoes. chocolate cake with chocolate icing. tea, kool aid to drink

Remember to Count your blessings to day. Prayers for everyone.

December 21, 2009 - Msg 76783: Oh SPOT, I am so sorry about OTIS. May the Lord comfort your heart, my friend. A great dog/friend is so hard to lose.

SPOT, I was at a friend's house last night and he was trying to get me to take home the last of his puppies! He has one of the cutest BIG black lab pups that was the runt of the litter but no more! That pup is huge. Mark (my friend) went and got him outside and immediately deposited him on my lap. His long legs were hanging off, though. I really wanted to take him home but Bruce is being stubborn about not having another dog yet. :-( As Ro said, I hope that soon, after you heart has time to heal, you will find another lab pup that needs a home and a friend. I think I mentioned before that I used to have a cat when i was young that I dearly loved and when he died, I never really got over it and still felt pain when I thought of him, but this cat we have now (Tiger) looks just like him and even acts like him and having him somehow healed the pain of losing my childhood kitty. It does help, at least in my case it did.:-)

December 21, 2009 - Msg 76788: Merry Christmas! We've been working hard to get our online card ready this year. It's taken some time to finish up but its finally ready!

Jan, Adam and I hope you enjoy this years card. It's always fun trying to think of a new twist on the Mayberry theme and for some reason, Charlie Brown was on our minds this year so here we are. Mayberry and Charlie Brown...I believe this might be a first time for this combination.

http://mayberry.com/tagsrwc/wbmutbb/anewsome/private/christmascard2009.html

The card is done in "Flash" so you'll need that but most people already have that plug-in installed so it should work fine. As a bonus, you might like to see The Ghosts of Christmas Past in the form of all the "old" online Christmas cards from our family dating back from 1997 through 2008.

The Ghosts of Christmas Past

I'm in for the quote-a-thon. Asa, did you ever tell us where that quote was from that said something about a "big black hole"?

Here's one for ya: "It could be that in the sight of heaven, you are far less worthy to live than millions like this poor man's child?!"....I think that's right, anyway. I just heard it last night.

One more: "...it's the gift that keeps on givin'"

December 23, 2009 - Msg 76816: By the way, I took Sean and two of his friends to see a movie last night. It was called "Old Dogs". It's the one with Robin Williams and John Travolta. Rated PG, not bad words and a nice little movie. There were some adult issues addressed, especially in the beginning of the movie so I don't think it is a movie for little children, ok for teens, though. It had a really nice message about the importance of family and the relationship between Robin and Travolta's characters was so funny and sweet, too. Pretty funny in some parts. It was kind of sad that Bernie Mack was in it...must have filmed it right before he died, and it was sad to think that Travolta's 14 year old son died recently.

Better go get to work...notice I haven't mentioned laundry in awhile and there is a good reason for that...I haven't had time to do much of it. Oh well, 'tis the season. :-)

Things just seem to be moving so slow with finishing up on the house. It is taking so long but we need be out of this apartment by Jan 9th. SO much to do!!

One of Bruce's sisters decided to have Christmas dinner at her house and invite Bruce's family. I told her i would bring my boxing gloves, or that her husband and i would just leave and go to a movie or something. Never in my life have I known people like his family...they aren't happy unless they are feeling "offended" or accusing someone else of something. Crazy. We have had some interesting holidays with them, let me tell you. Maybe I will bring some Mulberry squeezins to help calm them down and put them in a better mood!

Just to make your day, all you porchsters in the frozen north, it is 73 degrees and sunny here in North Texas today. Pansies and snapdragons are blooming, even a couple of roses, too. So, shiver and shake, and think of us down here in our shirtsleeves. Actually, truthfully, I envy you. I'd just love to see a white Christmas, just once.

December 23, 2009 - Msg 76826: It looks like we are going to have a very white, blizzardy Christmas, Ro! So, don't envy too much. ;)
I remember the year we had Christmas in Hawaii. I must admit, it was kind of hard to get that "Christmasy" feeling, due to the cold, snowy weather I was always used to.
But then, when I think about it, they didn't have snow on the first Christmas either, so maybe you folks in the South(or tropics) are nearer to the true Christmas after all. But, warm or cold, I guess we just have to remember that the weather is not the "reason for the season".

I would like to wish all of you a very Merry Christmas! And in the words of Tiny Tim: "May God bless us, everyone!"

December 24, 2009 - Msg 76829: Good morning, porch! Just got home from work. It's now 40 degrees here, and supposed to drop into the 20s some time tonight, with probable snow flurries tonight and tomorrow! Nowhere else but Texas!

I'm going to have a bowl of cereal and go to bed. I'll be going out to my son's tonight, church with his family then to his house for dinner. I've got five dozen of the best homemade tamales you ever ate (made by Jorge and Maria) and my son is picking up some Mexican sides, Eloise is making guacamole, and we will have a great Texas-style Christmas Eve dinner.

Gotta go fill the critter feeders, poor little things are going to be hungry in this sudden cold weather, and especially if we get the snow they're predicting. I have to say, I hope we do, because I've never seen a white Christmas. It will be a real treat.

Be blessed, porch friends, and a very Merry Christmas to one and all. --Romeena

December 24, 2009 - Msg 76842: Thank you, Asa. Nice to see you as well.

After I came home from work yesterday, Kai and I were driving to the store, and I had to stop for some gas. After I was done pumping the gas, I got back in the car and started it up. Kai says to me, "Daddy, I smell gas."
Well, it gave me the chance to use Barney's famous line, "Of course you smell gas. What do you think this car runs on, coal?!" :)
She didn't get why I was saying that, so I had to explain it was from that episode.

Well, it seems our snow turned to rain last night, so we will also have an icy Christmas, as well as white.

December 25, 2009 - Msg 76850: Good evening, porch. It's been an interesting evening. I drove Eloise and Jerry out to David and Brittney's, over really treacherous icy roads. We have had a couple of inches of snow, the kids had about four inches, and the roads were pretty bad. You northern folk have to remember, we're not equipped to deal with such as this. No salt trucks, etc. Anyway, I wasn't about to sit here alone on Christmas Eve and stare at the TV, so I said I'd drive if they wanted to trust me. They did, so off we went, after a little prayer. I obeyed the icy road rules - drive slow, no sudden moves, stay in your lane, no accels and keep your foot off the brake, let the engine slow you down, look ahead and anticipate, and keep plenty of space between you and the car in front. For once, just about everyone seemed to be thinking the same way, and all went well. We saw a few fender-benders, but nothing serious, and had no trouble at all ourselves. Coming home was a little tougher, but again, no real problems.

It's beautiful, where the snow has fallen. David said he had achieved a first in his lifetime - he actually shoveled snow off his front walk! He met us at the curb and escorted Eloise to the house, then came back for me and Toye Starr, and he and Jerry unloaded the car. We had good food, the kids opened their gifts from me, we watched "The Polar Express" on Blu-Ray and surround sound, and generally had a lovely evening.

Spot, I had no idea you were having dental problems, but you were wise to get it taken care of. Bad teeth can cause serious health problems. You may be a toothless ol' hound right now, but this too shall pass - you'll soon be gnawing bones with the best of us.

Nope, Asa, it's not from IAWL. Hint - I think it's a made-for-TV movie, and is fairly recent. Very good, though.

Possum, good news about Andy. Is he back to stay?

Well, I'm ready to turn in. The icy road drive about wore me out, especially the trip home. I wasn't so much worried about my own driving, you just never know when some idiotic hotdog is going to decide he knows how to drive on ice, and come plowing into you.

Be blessed, and have a wonderful Christmas Day. Happy Birthday, Jesus! --Romeena

December 25, 2009 - Msg 76851: MERRY CHRISTMAS MORNING, PORCH!!...and very merry it is. :-)

Oh SPOT, you poor thing....no teeth at Christmas?..AND turned 50. Well, at least you will have new teeth for the new year! This has not been an easy week or so for you but you have such a good and positive attitude. God bless you and your's.

Did I really see CHUCK leave a drive-by post?! Hey Chuck, Merry Chrismtas...

Hey, you got SNOW, RO!! How wonderful and I am proud of you for venturing out and driving. I can relate. Being a novice at such things the first time I drove to Colorado in December, I had plenty of white-knuckle moments. I'll never forget driving at night in my first blizzard...yikes!!

So, far this has just been a wonderful, beautiful Christmas for me. I was very busy yesterday with last-minute prep but by the time I got us all to church, all that stress just melted away in that beautiful little candlelit church full of so many people I love. The 6pm service was full and it was one of the most simple Christmas eve services we have ever had but by far the best, in my opinion. There was only the piano and song leader and we sang carols first, then a little 8 yr old sweetie girl named Cara sang "Do You Hear What I Hear", then a few more carols, the reading of the Christmas story and short few words from the pastor about Jesus (lovely words), then the lighting of all of our candles and the singing of Silent Night. God was so evident with us and I felt so much joy it was like by spirit was singing with the angels...those words "Glory to God in the highest. On earth PEACE, GOODWILL toward men!". I left on cloud nine. It was interesting that last night, in all my years as a Christian, I was more aware of the miracle of Christ's birth, and the incarnation than ever before. I believe it was the Lord's Christmas gift to me. :-)

After church we went to St. Susan's house. It was cold last night so she had a fire going in the fireplace and her house was just as cozy as Santa's own at the North Pole, I'm sure! ;-) Lots of good food, tamales, etc. The kids opened some presents from Susan...she always gets several gifts for all the kids, she is so sweet. What was neat is that Emily decided that she needed to bring all of her presents to me for me to help her open them. I loved it. She would just frown while trying to get the paper off...like it was such a bother to go through to get to the "good stuff". Funny little squirt. Mom sat up in the living room for hours, which just never happens so she is feeling less dizzy after the cardioversion last week. None of the kids got into a fight, which is rare! haha, so it was actually peaceful and my sis and I had a chance to sit at her kitchen table after the grandkids went home and chat about some things. It was just perfect. Such a blessing. We were so tired by the time we got home that I think we all slept like babies after watching some of "A Christmas Story" on TBS. Today, we take Erin out to the house and give her the basketball goal she has been wanting, then we are going to Bruce's sister's house for Chrismtas lunch/dinner. It is pretty cold out but not windy, so it should be one of those brisk, sunny Christmas days...my favorite!

Hope Possum is enjoying her time with Andy. I enjoyed being with my nephew last night, so I know how wonderful that is. :-) Possum, I thought of you at church last night when I saw Jubi. She looked so pretty and healthy. Her hair is now completely covering her head with redish curls and she looks like a young woman now. So pretty and just a serenity about her.

Well, baste the turkey... you all have a lovely day.

Love to All,
Boo

December 25, 2009 - Msg 76856: MERRY CHRISTMAS, PORCH!! It's a beautiful day here. The skies are clear, the sun is shining, and the ground is still fully covered with the beautiful gift of snow God sent us last night. It's so pretty!

TAGS Christmas ep is on TVLand right now. I think I'll take my DVD with ep over to Eloise's today - there will probably be a little lull where I can persuade everyone to watch it with me. Some of the family are fans, some not so much.

Boo, thank you for sharing your Christmas Eve experience with us. It sounds just lovely. Unfortunately, we didn't get to attend a service. We were planning to go with my son and his family to their church, but because of the weather, their service was canceled. By the time we got the word on that, we were already halfway there, too late to turn back to our own church, so we just plowed on to my son's house. I'm sorry about that, the Christmas Eve service is always a blessing, but the weather intervened. Still, it was a lovely time of family and sharing, and I think God was pleased. Certainly he kept his hand on me and my driving, and brought us all home safely.

Well, I'm off to bathe a grubby little puppy - there just wasn't time yesterday to bathe her, but today she gets it!

Be blessed, my friends, and have a Happy Christmas Day! --Romeena
