January 01, 2010 - Msg 76958: I'm here. It's 11:36 central time here. I stayed at the party and watched the ball drop, (11:00 our time), then came home. I wanted to be sure and be home before the crazies hit the streets, though I'm sure they'll keep drinking until the bars close.

The party was fun, as expected, but there's no place like home. I guess that's why as soon as I got in the house, I came to the porch - it's home!

Happy New Year, my friends. God bless each of you. --Romeena

January 01, 2010 - Msg 76962: Good morning friends, and happy new year to all.
You put that very well Ro. It just feels like home here. Even though I was wakend by all the popping of fireworks and the smell of gun powder from Spot and Salty (dang they are some noisy dawgs) it's still home here.

Twenty ten sounds a lot easier to say to me Elmer. My guess is that will be the chosen useage.

Anyone making any new year resolutions? Losing weight? Execise more? Study the scriptures more? Be a better disciple of Christ? Be a greater servant? Read more books? Watch less tv?

I hope everyone has a peaceful and prospurose new year. My goal is to draw closer to the Lord and be more the person he expects me to be. I know it may not be easy, but with God all things are possible. And I know He is on my side because He didn't send me here to fail. He wants all of us to succeed.

Well we have the whole clan coming over today for dinner. Better go to some tidying up/
Later gang, and God bless you all.

January 01, 2010 - Msg 76964: Sorry SPOT, I forgot to show up at midnight last night! Here I am this morning to wish you all a joyful and prosperous new year.

You are right, Ro...this is home. :-)

Erin fell asleep on the couch late last night and is still there. I just heard her talking in her sleep saying, "What thing? What thing?...". I think she will sleep for awhile.

We had a small gathering at the house last night to have a fire in the firepit but it was so wet and cold we gave up and decided to go home. By put out the fire with shovels full of sand, loaded up the kids and drove to the gate, the fog was gone, it was dry and clear and the full moon was out. What happened? It was like nature pulled a joke on me. Oh well, we can have backyard fires later. I have plenty of wood just have to find a way to keep it dry! Guess I will keep a tarp over one pile or something. I heard that you should put wood up against your house because of termites. Is that true?

Were those your resolutions up there, ASA? I thought you were the one who never makes them. I didn't really make any but I guess I would like to make some changes. Here they are: Eat at least 2 or 3 servings of fruits and veggies a day. Go up and down the stairs at the house everyday, first twice, then build from there...if my knees hold out. Drink more water. Have more dinners with family around the table. Spend more alone time with God.

Asa, I love how you expressed your desire to draw closer to God and be more the person he expects you to be. I think that is a very admirable goal and one many of us share, though we don't often voice it. I think if I were to have one personal, spiritual goal for 2010, it would be simplicity. Taking God at his word and not trying to figure out everything. Trying to figure out God is like trying to teach physics to your cat. It's impossible...for now, anyway. ;-)

Better git...I'm hitting the new year sales to find a bed and some nightstands.

Boo

January 01, 2010 - Msg 76965: Hey there Possum, happy new year to you!

January 01, 2010 - Msg 76966: That was supposed to be SHOULD NOT put wood against the house, of course.

Boo

January 01, 2010 - Msg 76967: Trying to figure out God is like trying to teach physics to your cat. It's impossible...for now, anyway. ;-)
Ha! I like that Boo. You are right on concerning "taking God at his word" me thinks. Gods ways are not always our ways, and at times we struggle with that concept. God may ask us to do what we may feel impossible, or don't understand, or maybe even flat out feel is not right. I guess that is where our faith must come in and we must rely upon God and in doing what He would want us to do. For a prideful old soal like me, that can be quite a task to do. But do it I must.

I wanted to holler at Romeena and tell her that I noticed that WGN is running a Barney Miller marathon all day today. I think she likes that show pretty good.

Also, I just recieved a call from my Cousin informing me my Aunt passed away yesterday. She was in her 80's and in poor health so it really was expected, but darn, what a way to start the new year. I am glad she is at peace now, and her children are all well grounded in the Gospel and though saddend, also relieved she is at rest.

Possum, did you get over your crud? How's your Mom doing?

Better get back to the vacuum.

Asa

January 01, 2010 - Msg 76968:
Happy New Year!

Rev-Thanks! You have to know we a feel the same about you.

Asa-I agree with Boo. That was very nicely said.

As for our Nation, going forward, I have no doubt that we will persevere. We have had a series of less than inspiring leaders, Republican and Democrat, including the current cast. However, that is not new to our history. This is truly the greatest nation on the 3rd rock.

Peace,
auh2o

January 01, 2010 - Msg 76969: Good morning, porch! I slept like a rock, slept late, and awakened feeling ready to face the New Year. Good and inspiring words from my porch friends - I can always count on you folks to cheer me up, encourage me, and offer great insights into everyday life. What a great place this porch is!

It was nice to hear from Elmer, and I hope he'll come back. This old porch is plenty big enough for new friends.

I'm watching a squirrel out back, and he's between me and the sun, so the sun is shining through his fluffy little tail. I just can't believe how skinny the actual tail is. It's no bigger than a strand of yarn, but with all that frazzed-out hair, you'd never know it until it gets silhouetted like it is now. Too funny!

Boo, you absolutely DO NOT want to store wood against your house. Termites consider that an engraved invitation, and be assured, they will accept. They'll invite their friends, too.

It's a beautiful, bright sunny day here, 39 degrees after an overnight low of 27. I'm heading over to Eloise's in about an hour, for some roast and some blackeyed peas, rice and cornbread. I need to brush Toye Starr, she looks a bit scruffy, but that won't take long. No bigger than she is, I can comb her out in about five minutes. Her baths, from drawing the water, bath, to blow dry, to the final comb-out takes about thirty minutes. It would take even less if she'd cooperate and quit arguing with me. Sometimes it takes longer, because when she's wet I wrap her in a big fluffy towel, turn her on her back and cradle her like a baby. She won't let me hold her that way any other time, but after a bath she just cuddles right down and goes to sleep. It's so sweet, sometimes I just sit there and watch TV and enjoy the moment. The Plum would do the same thing. Wonder what causes that??

Well, gotta get dressed, and get moving. Happy New Year, all you good friends. Be blessed! --Romeena

Asa, Mama is doing very good.I appreciate you asking. Me,I think I'm over the crud. I think what bothers me now is allergies acting up due to all the rain & dampness. But,I'm in pretty good shape,as far as possums go,I guess! Thanks for asking.

possum again

January 01, 2010 - Msg 76977: Yes, possums do indeed mosey. There was one that used to mosey through my yard every night, and sometimes in the daytime as well. He was always welcome, because later I'd find little holes he had dug and I know that meant one less grub to damage my lawn. However, I haven't seen him in several months now. I hope he wasn't a traffic casualty, or didn't meet an unfriendly dog. I always consider it a blessing when wildlife visits my yard. Incidentally, may I go on record as saying that neighborhood cats are not considered "wildlife" and will be met with a shower from my sprinkler system anytime I see one of them out there. No harm done, but they know they aren't welcome.

Had a lovely day over at Eloise's. She made a roast and some Hoppin' John, and it was delicious. My grandsons were there, Bentley (my granddog) was there, and Toye Starr was in heaven. She is beloved by all, gets lots of attention, has the kids and Bentley to play with, and just has a ball. Promptly at three, she came and tapped me on the leg, then assumed her "pick me up" stance. I did, she climbed to my shoulder, draped herself across me and fell asleep. It was her nap time. She slept about an hour, then woke up, hopped down and resumed playing. Nothing spoiled about my dog.

Well, as Asa noted earlier, there is a "Barney Miller" marathon on WGN. I've had it recording all day, and now I think I'll go and watch the rest of it as it airs. That was a really good show, way ahead of its time, in my opinion. Good writing, well-developed characters, imaginative storylines, great casting - just a good show. One of my all-time favorites.

Happy New Year, friends, and be blessed! --Romeena

January 01, 2010 - Msg 76978: Sounds like everyone has had a wonderful new years day. I've not done a thing today other than laundry and made a pot of 'tater soup and cornbread.Spot told me it was just mulberry squeezins in that jug but I'm beginning to wonder cause I've felt sluggish all day today. Gonna have a cold spell here the next few days, so hubby spent the day getting ready for that.My Little Bit on the other hand seems to love it, the snow too she just bounces and plays like crazy. Then comes in and crashes out for hours lol. Elmer, congrats on 62 years how awesome is that. I hope you all have a great night, stay warm love and prayers to you all-Salty Dog

January 01, 2010 - Msg 76979: I used to watch Barney Miller all the time, Ro.
I remember I even did a school report on Steve Landesburg, who played Arthur Dietrich(I don't remember what class it was for, or what the theme of the reports we were supposed to do was, but I think it was something on comedy).
I know he wasn't one of the original cast members, but I really liked his dry sense of humor.

Still in Indiana. Kai and I are supposed to leave tomorrow, but I am thinking about staying another day. Even if it means I have to go in to work for a few hours when we get back home on Sunday after our 10 hour drive. Oye. ;)
I am trying to get my wife to get her mom to come up and stay with us for a while while she recuperates. She is going to talk to her about it. Normally I wouldn't want that(MIL at our house, yikes!) but I also don't care for my wife staying down there, and the disruption of our schedules and all.

We didn't do much for New Years Eve. We let Kai stay up and watch the ball drop, which she was excited to do, even though we didn't celebrate very much if at all, but she was excited just the same. Nice to be a kid!

January 02, 2010 - Msg 76982: Good morning, all. Beautiful and sunny here, 39 degrees. I plan to do very little today, probably the biggest thing I'll do is cook something for supper. I've decided to just flat-dog waste this day! I love to do that now and then. I just give myself permission, let the dust lie, and experience no guilt whatsoever. Of course, when one lives alone, that's easier to do. Not that Dale wouldn't have been on my little bandwagon, he would have, but the guilt was harder for me to shed when he was here. I always wanted to keep things nice for him. Of course, he wouldn't let me do the work alone, and if I picked up a dustrag, he would drag out the vacuum, and we'd end up working on a day we could have been loafing. Lord, I miss that man!

My daughter sent Toye Starr a new toy for Christmas (like she doesn't already have about fifty) and she just loves it. It's about four inches long, shaped like a medication capsule, and says "Chill Pill" on it. Starr just loves it, and carries it everywhere. I think she likes it because it's small, light, soft and fits her little mouth very well. I'll have to email Rob and tell her what a hit her gift has made.

Well, I'm off to my chair, to just veg. Shoot, I might just sit right there and compost! What a deal! --Romeena

January 02, 2010 - Msg 76983: Correction - the Chill Pill was from my grandson, Gary. He also sent me a box of Fredericksburg fudge. Yum!

I did it. I wasted the day, totally! Guess I'll stir myself up enough to cook something for dinner, but it won't be much, or very complicated. Sure has been nice! I should be well-rested to get up for preaching in the morning. Now what did I do with my earrings??

Be blessed -- Romeena

January 02, 2010 - Msg 76985: Well, Ro, hope you enjoyed your day. I need one of those "wasted days", and soon! I didn't feel well this morning...just the usual stomach troubles and didn't sleep well last night. I was very tempted to stay home all day and do nothing but today was my dad's 84th birthday and there was no way i was not going to go visit him. I can't believe it; somehow 84 sounds so much closer to 90. He is really doing well. My sis and her husband went and bought mom one of those recliners in which you push a button and it lifts you up and practically drops you on the floor. Mom was having a difficult time getting out of the chair and so she was staying in bed too much, which could really cause her some problems. She wanted her room changed around this afternoon so we did that. I was tired after but had to go to the store.

I had a little white rice for dinner and some milk...about all my stomach can tolerate. Better go...the kids are fighting and I am getting ready to throw them outside! ;-)

It is cold here also. It's 7 degrees now was -6. We've had a couple of feet of lake-effect-snow, this week, with more due today. Let's stay inside today Tom.

There is a starving artist's show at a local motel today. I'm debting whether to stay here and play with Toye Starr, or pick up Eloise and go spend money I shouldn't spend on an amateur painting I don't need, and will have to try to find a place for when I get it home. Hmmm. The big draw is that you can get a real oil painting for $15-25, and (rarely) you'll find one that's really pretty good. Still, I think I'll pass.

Drat, I'm out of birdseed and there is a flock is hungry-looking doves picking hopefully in the grass around the feeders, and not finding much. I do have some old cereal, though. Maybe I'll crunch that up a bit and put it out for them. Better that than nothing, I guess.

See you later, taters. Keep warm! --Romeena

It is pretty cold here in south texas. This has been the coldest, wettest winter I can remember and I LOVE every minute of it! After the torrid, dry summer it is a real pleasure. I actually had to turn the heater on this morning. I only turn on the heater a handful of times each winter.

Of course, i don't know how I would do with the snow and cold that Auh2o is experiencing. We freeze up at 40 degrees around here.

Well, not much to comment on and I don't wanna be a "one man show". I will probably be going back to the rehab tonight (I had taken a few weeks off), so please send up a prayer. Back to work after an 11 day break. It's been good to be away but good to be back as well. But a ton of work waiting for me. Oh well, better to have work then not.

Sending up a prayer for your return to the rehab place Boo. You are a wonderful servant.

Rev, I know your question was directed to Spot, but can I chime in on your football question? I am neither a Cowboys nor a Chargers fan, but these two teams seem to be playing the best going into the play-offs. Until yesterday I was thinking New England could do some damage, and they still may, but thet lost Welker yesterday and I think that will really impact them. He was a huge component of their offense. So my thinking is a Dallas- Chargers superbowl with the Cowboys pulling off a major upset. (but don't put any money on it, I ain't HA!)

Still waiting to hear when my Aunt's funeral is going to be. The end of the week is my guess. I will miss her. She reminded me very much of my own Mother who passed away 30 years ago. :(

I hope you all have a wonderful day.

Asa

Morning Porch

Still cold here with just a nice gentle snow falling and no wind.

Boo-If you folks can handle that 100 degree heat day after day, you'd have no problems with the cold stuff. Things were moving a bit slow here also this morning. That first day back is always a doozy.

Rev-18 is pretty cold.

Later friends,

January 04, 2010 - Msg 77007: Good morning, porch! I slept like a baby last night - awake about every two hours! No special reason, no problems, I just kept "falling awake." Not really a problem, I'd just look at the clock, breathe a prayer of thanks that it wasn't time to get up, and go right back to sleep!

Well, I guess the day has come. I've been storing calls on my recorder from various doctors who want me to make an appointment and come in. My cardiologist renewed the prescriptions for my cardiac meds for one more month and had the pharmacy tell me that he will not renew any more until I come in. Hmm. Guess he means it. I'm usually very good about getting in to see them when it's time, but they all fell due in December, and I just had too much going on. So today I'll get them all called and appointments made, while I still can, before that monstrosity of Obama's passes, if indeed it does.

One political observation, if you'll permit me. Why does the Left think that Republicans don't see a problem, don't think there's a need for healthcare reform? Just because we don't think that pile of junk they're trying to shove down our throats is any good, they assume we don't want change at all. They laugh at us and ask if we're blind. Healthcare is broken, no question about it. In this country, if you get sick you can go to an emergency room and you will be seen. Legal, illegal, poor, homeless, whatever - you will be treated. In nearly 31 years at my hospital, I've yet to see anyone just turned away and told to go sit on the curb and die. It simply doesn't happen. Maybe without ins#rance you can't just waltz into a posh office and sit among fresh flowers and read late-issue magazines while waiting for a doctor who will have your up-to-date chart in his hand, but still you can get care. There are free clinics. You might have to wait, but you'll be seen, and that's what really matters. So, to the manipulative, deceitful Socialists on the left of the aisle, I'd say - the rest of us want healthcare reform too. This bill just isn't it!

OK, that's that. Thank you for your forbearance. Have a great day, everyone! --Romeena

January 04, 2010 - Msg 77008: you are very kind, ASA; thank you for your prayers. I am very sorry to hear about your Aunt's passing. Bruce lost an uncle yesterday. We had not seen him in years and they weren't close.

I believe you are probably right, Auh2o. I have spent quite a bit of time in Colorado, during blizzards and such and I always enjoyed it as long as I could go inside and warm up when I was ready. I found the key to enjoying winter weather is being prepared. If you are wearing enough insulated clothes, boots, hats and gloves..no problem! ha We have had so much fun playing in snow, sledding, snow tuning, snow mobiles, long walks at night in the snow. I just love it...it's like magic. I love the way snow absorbs sound and it is so quiet...you just hear the crunch or the rubbing sound the top snow makes when it's fresh and the way snow looks like diamonds on those crisp, sunny winter days. I could go on and on but I'll spare you. ;-)

Hope things warm up for you soon, TOM. :-)

Better get back to work. :-(

January 04, 2010 - Msg 77011: Well, after re-reading that little rant, I realize it doesn't tie together, and I didn't really make my point. On one hand, I'm saying healthcare is broken, and then proceed to tell of its virtues. One point cancels the other. So - to clarify: Reform is needed where there is unnecessary, wasteful spending and there is a lot of that! Reform is needed to allow low-income folks who live in counties which don't have county hospitals offering comprehensive care to go to those hospitals that do, in neighboring counties. Reform is needed that would allow everyone to see a doctor for routine checkups, not just ER treatment when they're ill or injured. And here's an oldie but a goodie - reform is needed that would put every single person in Washington, including Obama and Michelle and the kids, on the same plan the rest of us are on, and then you can bet we'd see a "reform" plan that would be pure poetry. OK, that's really all. For any more, if you're interested, check out the blog. I'm headed there next.--Romeena

January 04, 2010 - Msg 77012: Good Monday morning porch, just checking in from work today. COLD today, about 15 when I came into work. some snow predicted later this evening. guess this is winter in Northeast Tennessee. BRRRRR. Hopefully no one will lose power or water this time.

Prayers for your family ASA with the loss of your aunt.

Beth goes back to school tomorrow and Patrick will go back next week. Back to some sort of routine I guess.

Better get busy. Lunch will be a big ole bowl of chicken and dumplings (should be good for SPOTs gums. Not sure what to serve with that though. Guess we can have salad if anyone wants that. dessert will be: warm brownies with ice cream and chocolate sauce.

Have a blessed day and Pryers all around.

ASA- prayers for you my friend. I'm indeed sure that your aunt was a chip of your dear mother.
RO- You're off to a good 2010 start on HC.
I noticed that new soapbox under the porch, but I
wasnt sure whose it was!! haha
All I can say is that I will be contacting my reps and senators
a lot in this time of hashing out these two bills!
"The power of the pen in twenty-ten!" (and the fax, and the phone, and the e-mail!) For me, there are five main things: give back the medicare funds that it takes, no public option, no abortion services, no plan-parenthood in our schools, and
there must be tort reform with it all, and my elected
officials will be hearing this from me quite a bit!
OK, thanks for letting me borrow the box!
Boo- prayers for you tonight!
God bless and happy new year,

Hey Folks

Here's a warm thought, pitchers and catchers report in 41 days!!

Romeena-I agree with ya, go figure. How's the old saying go? Don't throw the baby out with the bath water. I'm sure the present administration is thinking up such very deep thoughts that us mere mortals couldn't comprehend. Have you ever read Orwell's "Animal Farm"? If you have can't ya just see the pigs?

January 05, 2010 - Msg 77022: Good evening, porch. REV, it just delights me that you and little Jake have bonded so closely, and I love to think about the two of you sitting there enjoying the fire and each other's company. Only someone who has loved and enjoyed a pet can understand, and that certainly includes me.

Auh2o, -- oh yeah!!! Hilarious!

Well, I unplugged all the outside lights out front. Didn't take anything down, just unplugged them. That way, if some of my down-south kids manage to make it up here, I can plug the light show back in for them. The young-uns enjoy it! The stuff in the back yard is still lit up and working, though. I enjoy it, and as far as Im concerned, that's reason enough. I guess when you get to be my age, you can indulge yourself a bit if you want to. Ha!

Well, I should turn in. It's almost midnight, but thanks to a nap this afternoon, I'm not sleepy, so maybe I'll stay up a while. Or not. We'll just see how it goes. Toye Starr is voting for going to bed, but I can always override her vote. Be blessed, friends. --Romeena

January 05, 2010 - Msg 77023: Speaking of pups, I saw something hilarious yesterday. The kids and I were in town last night and we saw this truck in the parking lot with three dogs in it. It was cold enough outside that they were fine in there with the windows up but you should have seen them. There was a huge lab and two of the fattest pugs I have ever seen in my life. When we got within their sight, they went berserk. You should have seen it...fat pugs slamming their barking faces against the window! It just looked hysterical. I wish I had a camera at the time but didn't, darn it.

It is cold out there this morning! Bruce just opened the front door and brrrr! Better get out the long-johns....kidding...I don't won any. Used to wear them in Colorado but lost them somewhere. I think I lent them to Asa at that last party we had at SPOT's house.

Well, hopefully the builder will show up today after his vacation (they went to the grand canyon in an RV...brave souls). We need to get alot done today!

Well, thanks for the prayers for rehab last night. It was good and we had quite a few girls. One was crying because one of her friends died yesterday. Don't know if it was an overdose or suicide but you hear about suicides from time to time among their friends and family. Very sad.

Well, better finish the coffee and get dressed for the day. Be back on my break.

Boo

January 05, 2010 - Msg 77024: Good Tuesday my porch friends, hope everyone is doing okay today. Sounds like we are pretty cold all around the porch today. about 16 degrees this morning as I came to work. some snow around and the roads I travel were covered with a powdery snow. I made it in okay though. I am not sure it is going to warm up anytime soon here and more snow is expected by the week end.

Glad your rehab group went well Boo, I know you make such an impact on those young women. Sometimes you don't see it right away but down the road they will remember you as someone who accepted them and cared about them.

Lunch will be: roast beef sandwhiches, chips, and SLAW. Little debbies for dessert. Tea, kool aid to drink.

Prayers and blessings to all.

I also found a poker chip and a picture of Myrna Loy under there. The recycler in Greendale gave me $11.23 for all them elixir bottles but not a cent for the poker chip and Loy's picture.
I'll leave the $$$ earned on the little table next to the spitoon and Aunt Verandy's glider.

Hello porch family....another cold one!

A friend of mine shared this story with me recently. She had to pugs and about 4 weeks ago she told me that one of them died in her arms. The other pug (which was his brother) was right there when all this happened. They were always together. She said that he just started grieving something awful day and night. She said that he would go and look for his brother all day long for the past four weeks whinning as he looked everywhere. Well yesterday the brother died also. He grieved himself to death. Poor little fellow. That is so sad to me.

Everyone have a great night and remember to give your fur friend a hug.
Jesus loves us all so much. Thank You Lord!
Love and prayers!

January 05, 2010 - Msg 77031: Oh, that's sad,Rev. Yes,those little creatures have feelings too-for sure.

Hey to Albert-funny post!

Spot, you let a dog look in your mouth today? Hee Hee! Look back at what you typed! You know I LIVE to pick at you,so get it right, man! LOL

Well,I took my mama to one of her doctors today and she did one of those "old lady hard of hearing" things- Boo,you'll like this! We were in a waiting room full of people-imagine it like a dining room table & mama and I were seated at the head of the table, with people on both sides. The waiting room was pretty quiet, when Mama "whispered" to me:"I'm glad you don't look like that on your left!"
Well, I kind of hung my head and looked toward the right. The room cleared out a bit(thankfully!) and then she said "You looked the wrong way!" I told her that's because I'm sure everyone heard her and she embarassed me! Her reply? " Well,I was whispering,I didn't think anybody could hear." When you are a 78 year old woman who is hard of hearing, and you "whisper"-people can hear!Trust me. By the way,she was glad that I didn't look like a rather homely woman who was seated to our left,in case you are wondering.
I hope the woman didn't hear Mama.I'm sure some folks did.

They are calling for a chance of snow here on Thursday night. I ain't holding my breath. I'll believe it when I see it! Sure is cold enough for a blizzard,in my opinion!

Well, y'all stay warm & have a good night.Love to all!
