February 23, 2011 - Msg 82751: Thanks for the well-wished but I had to cancel the appointment because Eris was much sicker today. I had to take her to the doctor instead (like you said, Romeena, there is a compensation for everything. hehe). No waffle iron for me but turns out poor Erin tested positive for the flu and she has congestion in her lungs. Still running fever and feeling bad, too. Doc started her on some meds to help her..I just hope it doesn't make her sick to her stomach because her appetite is really poor right now.

I am just so tired...I think I will take some Vit C and go lie down on the couch for a little bit before finishing dinner.

Well, y'all have a nice evening. The porch has been so slow lately! We need more to come rock with us.

February 23, 2011 - Msg 82755: Hope Erin feels better soon.Lots of sickness going around-my whole family has been hit by strep throat, colds, sinus infections, flu-like illnesses. Prayers would be appreciated-we are sick of being sick! Thanks, y'all!

February 23, 2011 - Msg 82756: Prayers for all you sick ones out there. I think we're all healthy at the moment. Actually, I pretty much stay that way, except for the chronic back-related things. I have cardiac issues and diabetes, but that all is in good control and doesn't bother me. I very rarely get any of the infectious things that go around. I guess that's another of those compensation things. The older you get, the fewer colds and such that you get. By the time you get to be my age, you've seen them all before, your body just shrugs them off with a "ho-hum" and keeps on going. One problem, though - when I DO get a cold it's usually a doozy. Also, strep throat seems to hit whenever it chooses, whether you've had it before or not. I don't get a bad throat but once every few years, but when I do, it lays me low for several days.

Well, Joe has come and gone. We dug out the old broken biological filter for the pond - the one my grandson stepped on and broke the connection. I'm not convinced the thing was doing any good anyway, so rather than try to fix it (probably impossible), or replace it (no way), I'm just trashing it. I hooked up the lines without it, and I think it will be fine. I think the UV light will do more to keep the water algae free than that silly filter ever did. We also planted three "Angel Face" rose bushes, and then the rain started. The last one, and the four that are still due to arrive, will go in a new area in the front, which hasn't been dug yet, and we got rained out for today. So, Monday will find me out there in the dirt again. My favorite place. I love to play in the dirt. I did it as a child, and I still do. It just makes me happy to plant something and watch it grow.

Well, guess I'll go round up something to eat. I'm not very hungry, maybe just a can of soup. Sounds good on a rainy evening. Blessings, friends! --Romeena

February 24, 2011 - Msg 82762: Good afternoon porch, hope everyone is feeling a bit better today!

been busy on my end of the porch this week, not much time to pull up a chair til now. A very rainy dreary day today around this end of the porch. would of been a good day to sleep in and just be lazy but here I am working away. :(

lots of folks around here are sickly with one thing or the other. lots of flu, stomach bugs and such. We are trying to stay healthy, washing hands and such but no matter where you go some folks are not as careful so the bugs keep moving around.

looks like I need to rustle up so warm comfort food for us today: homemade chicken noodle soup, grilled ham and cheese sandwhiches, pickles, and chips for those who want them. tea, lemonade to drink. warm apple crisp with vanilla bean ice cream. that should make us all feel better.

better get back to work. have a blessed day. feel better and don't forget your pills!

February 27, 2011 - Msg 82788: Good afternoon, porch. Just got home from preachin' - we had a revised schedule this morning, started later than usual, just one service instead of our usual two, and it was very nice. My friend Joan who has been out since early November with two different back surgeries - was back today. In a wheelchair, but she was there. She hopes to get rid of the chair in the next week or so, and be on her walker for a while, then a cane, and then (God willing) she'll be back to her independent little self, with no "helpers" at all. Her doctor wanted her to go into a "rehab facility" - read nursing home - until she was on her feet. She refused, because our class had already figured it all out. One of her daughters was there at night part of the time, and a class member stayed with her at night when the daughter couldn't. Our class took morning or afternoon shifts with her, staying until the night person got there, so she was never left alone. The therapists came to the house, and she has done just beautifully. I think the class is going to one shift now, arriving about mid-morning, taking care of lunch, and leaving around 3 or 4 p.m., and she'll be alone until the night person gets there. We may soon stop the night person as well. She gets up to the bathroom on her own now, so a night sitter is really not needed. God is good.

There are robins running all over my yard. I do mean running! Don't robins ever fly?? The beautiful, goofy little things just skitter around the yard all day. They don't hop, they run, and they are very, very busy. Woe unto any worm that makes an appearance, because he'll be pulled out like a rubber band and quickly consumed. It's hilarious! The worm may not find it so funny, but it sure is comical from my window.

I just spoke with Tom on the phone. He's okay. He's been sick, but is doing better. His stepdad is in the hospital with a sick spell - not sure exactly what, but my guess would be pneumonia. Tom expects him home in a few days. I told him we'd been missing him, and he was very appreciative. He said he'll be back on the porch soon.

Well, time to scare up some lunch. Blessings, everyone! --Romeena

Been a windy and warm day here in south texas. We are starting to get green grass coming up in the yard and we let the goats and Thelma Lou out to graze so they have been napping on the porches today. So funny looking! At one time around noon, I looked out there and all three goats, the donkey and both big dogs were sleeping on the back porch at the same time. We have become such rednecks.

I had the pleasure (sarcastically) of trimming all three goat's hooves today and it is a chore. Strangely enough, the baby goat was the best and hardly fought us at all. The baby's mother was a real handful and fought us alot. Oh well, life on the farm. I don't know how Homemaker does it with all of hers!

Would like to chat longer but have to go do some chores.

February 27, 2011 - Msg 82797: Well, have to pass this tip on to you...I think we discovered something that works better than vicks. Sean was having a coughing fit so I looked on the internet for ways to stop a cough and one article suggested a slice of fresh ginger in the mouth. I happened to have some so I slice a small piece and told sean to put it on his tongue and bite down on it. Well, that stuff was HOT!..like a pepper but he spit it out and no more coughing. Haha. Yep, Ro..it was so funny. I gave him a slice and told him to just give it a gentle bite and he started chewing. You should have seen the look on his face...eyes got big and he spit it out in a hurry. It sure did work, though. haha

Boo

February 28, 2011 - Msg 82803: Thanks, Boo, and REV, for the kind words about my SS class. We're a pretty close-knit group, for sure. We have newcomers, and some who have been with the class for the whole 38 years I've been part of it, and everything in between. Usually it takes just one or two visits for someone to decide to get on board. Don't join our class if you don't want to work, though! Our teacher, Pat, will commit us at the drop of a hat, to do anything that needs to be done. Then she tells us about it! Every year before Christmas, we pack the shoeboxes for the Samaritan's Purse project - we shipped over a hundred boxes this past Christmas. We pass an envelope every Sunday, and each person puts in what they can or want to contribute. This is over and above the regular tithe to the church, of course. That fund sends $95 each month to a pastor in a little church in Romania, and $50 to our missionary in Mongolia. We had a little excess this month, so we sent enough money to the Samaritan's Purse livestock endeavor to buy six goats and fourteen chickens for needy families in a Third World country. If you're familiar with the Heifer International organization, this is the same plan. Ingenious.

Recently we learned through a school board contact that there are over a thousand homeless students in Irving. That doesn't necessarily mean they're living on the streets, but they have no permanent home. Some are living with relatives or friends, some in shelters, whatever. Anyway, obviously they don't have the money for backpacks and supplies. So the church as a whole went to work on it, and in all 1028 backpacks were purchased and outfitted with the necessary school supplies. Our class had just given away about forty filled backpacks at the start of school in September, but we got into this drive as well. Also, once or twice a year we make up "welcome baskets" that are given to people who have just moved into a couple of low-rent apartments. We fill the baskets with helpful little things - sponges and scrubbers, dish soap, personal soap, toothbrushes, tissues, washcloths, notepad and pen, just anything someone might need. Of course, we tuck a New Testament in as well, and a little flyer inviting them to our church. We take care of our own, as we did with Joan, but we try to reach out to the community as well. The investment of time, money and energy is small compared to the return we get. That just can't be measured. God is good.

Well, guess I'd better run a couple of errands, and see if I can scare up some lunch. Blessings, everyone! --Romeena

March 01, 2011 - Msg 82812: Morning porch, hope everyone is feeling better today. a sunny day morning on my end of the porch, hope it stays that way.

Got up this morning to get ready for work and there was NO WATER! nary a drop was coming out of the faucet. made it very frustrating to get ready for work. I had an 8 am client scheduled so I needed to be on time and I am sure they appreciate the fact that I have showered and look relatively presentable. I used a gallon of distilled water we had and made do so I could make it on time. Apparently all the rain we had yesterday caused some type of turbidity problem and an electrical problem at the waste water treatment facility so they shut the water pump off leaving about 2,000 homes without water! Guess I was not the only one who had a "bird bath" this morning. :) Hopefully it will be fixed by the time I get home.

Prayers for Possum and Laci today. I have had a couple clients sick this week and unable to come in. I would rather they stay away if they are sick rather than passing it on to me.

Lunch menu will be: roast beef sandwhiches, chips, pickles, SLAW, oatmeal raisin cookes/chocolate chip cookies/peanut butter cookies for dessert. tea, kool aid to drink.

March 01, 2011 - Msg 82814: Thanks for that link, MDC. I don't like taking medicine, but something natural/herbal I don't mind. The doctor said that Laci's strep is viral,so not much antibiotics would do for it anyway, I guess. She's on them just as protection because she's had heart issues.
I'm not totally certain that I have strep again, and I pray not. Maybe I'm feeling bad from all the crying I did yesterday when I found out my high school band teacher died. If I wake up tonight with a killer sore throat, I'll know it's strep.
Laci is feeling kinda rough, so appreciate the prayers for her.
Save me some of that Maude slaw!

Howdy porch family.

Maude..... sure hope you got that water back on. You don't realize how much you use it till it's off.

Possum....prayers that you get over that stuff and get feeling like a chipper possum rather than a poosam:)

Well better get ready to go. We're going to a baseball game. My daughter's boyfriend is a teacher and he coaches the high school team so we're going to cheer them on. It's turned a little chilly so gotta dress warm.

Love and prayers!

Possum, sorry to hear of your band teacher. I lost three great HS teachers in 2010. The torch is definitely being passed along.
Keep up your strength. Prayers for you and yours.

Hope you feel better soon, Possum! Sean is finally doing better today but still having some coughing. Poor little Emily has pneumonia.

Better go finish dinner.

March 02, 2011 - Msg 82823: Good mornin' y'all. I sure thank you all for the prayers. I'm not sure that I have strep throat this time, but I have something. Fever, coughing.. I'm thinking it's the same flu-like viral illness that Mr. Possum had last week. If so,it'll run its course soon. But Laci has strep and hasn't been feeling too swift. Hopefully she'll bounce back soon.

Sorry to hear of little Emily having pneumonia, Boo. Poor little girl!

I had to stop and think "Who is Rocky?" ha ha Thank you, Rev. And you too MDC. My band teacher was the best. Sorry for the loss of your teachers.

Well, guess I'll stay under my rock so I won't pass this bug to anybody else.Y'all take care!

March 02, 2011 - Msg 82824: Good morning, porch! I'm up earlier than usual, got to be out in Southlake by 9:15, to see another back doctor. I hope this one has some answers. I'm really getting tired of this.

It's a beautiful morning, a little cloudy, a little cool at 48 degrees, but it will warm up. I love a morning like this, because the squirrels are very active. I can see them running everywhere. The trees are starting to leaf out though, so it won't be long before I'll lose the view of all the scampering through the trees on the other side of my back fence. When there are no leaves, it's amazing how much activity takes place back there. The busy-ness doesn't stop when the leaves come out, but I won't be able to see it anymore. No matter, though. There will be plenty going on right in my own yard, and I have a perfect ringside seat for all of that. I love it!

There's that big silly robin again. He's just racing around the yard like a roadrunner! Every few seconds he stops and seems to be listening, then shuffles around in the grass with his feet and his beak. Sometimes he pulls up a worm, sometimes not, but he sure does try. I just love sitting here, watching all the critters. I've done a lot back there to make the environment attractive to them, and it has been worth every penny and every drop of sweat. Such fun!

Well, gotta get moving. There's no predicting the traffic on the way out to Southlake. There's so much construction. Sometimes it moves along pretty well, and sometimes you wish you'd brought your lunch. Blessing, friends! --Romeena

March 02, 2011 - Msg 82825: Oh, good morning to you, Possum! I'm sorry you and little Laci are sick. I know you're treating Laci's strep - with her little heart and all, she doesn't need strep. You all stay in, stay warm and do what the doc tells you, okay?

Tom, are you feeling better? How about your stepdad - is he home yet? Check in, please!

And REV, stop using those aliases and for pete's sake, don't let anyone see you in a dress! I doubt if you've got the legs for it. --Romeena

March 02, 2011 - Msg 82826: Yes, better keep wearing pants, REV...*snicker*.

One of those mornings when I am draggin' around trying to get everything done. You know, sometimes this home schooling thing is very difficult. I just want to go back to be but too much to do. I had two really bad dreams last night that woke me up and had alot of trouble sleeping. I think it was the spaghetti I made for supper...it sort of laid on my chest.

Better get crackin'.

Hope you and Laci are feeling well soon, Possum. I have been keeping up with Mavis on facebook and the poor girl is having a terrible time with a bad cough/infection.

March 02, 2011 - Msg 82831: Thanks for the kind words, MDC. I've always had a passion for animals, since I was a little bitty kid. Used to drive my mom crazy, dragging home stray cats and dogs, fallen baby birds, you name it. I was constantly begging and pleading for a horse (we lived in town) and finally got one when we moved to the country. I come by the trait honestly, though. My mom once brought home a pitiful little puppy she found under her car. We put it in the garage, I went out and slid a bowl of milk under the door for it, and it bit me on the finger, drawing blood. Then during the night, it proceeded to die. Tests showed it was rabid, so at the age of eleven, I got to take the rabies series. Not fun.

None of that dampened my interest in animals, though. I just get a happy feeling when I'm with critters, or even just watching them from my window. I think God gave me that connection, because it gives me great joy, and the least I can do is to provide for them in my small way. I guess they don't really need me to feed them - their Father takes care of them, according to the scripture - but it makes me happy to do it.

Boo, I'm sorry you're feeling poorly this morning. I guess we just have those days. I'm feeling pretty good myself, generally speaking. If I can just get this back thing fixed, I'll feel wonderful! I just got back from seeing the spind doc, and he's going to do more steroid injections, but this time he wants to infiltrate the area where the chest tube damaged the nerves, rather than going to the root of the nerve at the spine. He said he'll just "flood" the damaged area and see if that won't help. Makes sense to me, and I'm willing, so Monday afternoon it will be done.

Well, Joe is here to enlarge a flowerbed out front to accommodate the roses I ordered, so guess I'd better get out there. It will go like this: Joe - "How do you want this to look? What do you want to do?" Me - "Whatever you think will be just fine with me." Joe - "Okay, what if we, etc." I learned long ago to trust his judgment over mine, and I've never been sorry.

Blessings, friends! --Romeena

March 02, 2011 - Msg 82832: No, I don't know what a "spind doc" is, though I imagine it's something like a "spine doc." And I proofread, too! Scary!

We got a lot of work done. Joe enlarged a bed that runs along the driveway out front, made it like a bell curve out into the yard. That gave a lot of room in it, and he built it up about a foot high on the yard side, so it's like a low berm. He planted three rose bushes on the mounded edge, and another in a corner at the top of the bed. There's one more bush to be planted, but it was back-ordered, will be delivered tomorrow (naturally.) So Joe just dug the hole and I'll plant the bush when it gets here.

Beautiful day here. Soft breeze, 72 degrees, everything is budding - there even a few iris buds starting to rise. Another three or four weeks and things are going to look a lot different around here - lots of color! I love it!

Blessings, porch. --Romeena

Sure hope you get some relief from your discomfort, Ro. Prayers. :-)

Up at 4am, darn it. Bruce didn't shut the bedroom door when he came to bed and the cat woke me at 4 wanting out. I woke up feeling anxious...you know how when you wake up in the night it seems like every potential problem or concern hits you while you lie there so I got up to sit on the porch for a minute. Will now read a bible verse or two and try to go back to bed. See you later.

March 03, 2011 - Msg 82837: Good morning, everyone! Wow, is it beautiful here today! Sun is shining, skies so clear, breezy and pleasant at 50 degrees and climbing, buds on everything, birds and squirrels so busy, pond fountains flowing and when that last rose arrives today (as promised) I'll get out there and plant it. I just love this time of year, don't you?

Yep, Jorge is a keeper. Joe relies on him, and apparently pays him what he's worth. I like Jorge a lot. When I first met him, he spoke almost no English, and was extremely shy. We managed to converse on a basic level since I do speak some Spanish, and I found him to be a simple, honest man who wants the best he can provide for his family. I encouraged him to learn more English, and we made a bargain. I'll teach him English when he's here, and he teaches me Spanish. A win-win thing. Later, he and his wife enrolled in ESL classes, and both have made a lot of progress, especially Jorge. I wouldn't say he's fluent, but he's come a long way. He's starting to understand little jokes in English, and that's a good measure of comprehension in any language. As a worker, he's competent and best of all, he's willing and is a self-starter. I've never seen him just sitting, or leaning on his shovel. He's busy from the time he hits this yard until he leaves. When he leaves here, he goes to his second job at a fried chicken place. As far as I'm concerned, this man deserves a green card, and a pathway to citizenship. Things will have to change in the laws before that can happen for him, and I hope those changes come. It seems to me that if we made it a lot easier for good people with a clean record to come in legally, then only those who have unsavory backgrounds would enter illegally. Stop tying the hands of the INS officers and allow them to profile. Only those who can't produce legal papers would have reason to object. Those who can would be proud to show them. That would allow the officers to find and deal with the illegals much more easily. Employers would be able to hire legal immigrants because there would be plenty of them, and they would then refuse to hire illegals. Right now, an illegal can be anyone from a hard-working person seeking a better life, to a criminal with a past so unsavory that even their own country doesn't want them. With my little plan, "illegal" would almost always translate to "criminal" and they should be treated as such and deported. Mexico will fight such a plan, because they see America as a pop-off valve for their huge criminal population, a trash can where they can dump their unwanted citizens. That explains why all the border guards are on the U.S. side - there's nobody on the other side trying to stop people from leaving, and of course there's no one trying to enter. Something has to change.

Well, sorry about that. You didn't ask for it, but it's on my heart. I know a lot of good people who are basically fugitives, and their only crime was doing whatever it took to get their children into a safe environment, where they could learn and grow and have an opportunity for a better life.

Well, got errands to run, and have to work tonight, so I guess I'd better get at it. Blessings, friends! --Romeena
