May 13, 2011 - Msg 83966: Good Friday morning, porch family! An overcast day with a chance of rain on this end of the porch. I hope each of you have a great day and be blessed in a special way today. I'm off to visit my mother. God bless.

We had a good bit of rain here, Rafe and it was such a blessing. Have a good visit with your mother.

Not much time to chat this morning...need to get Erin off to school and check on old Hank. He is probably pretty sore this morning. You should have seen him yesterday when I brought him home. He would just stand there with his tail and ears drooping. He did, indeed, look like someone who had just lost their "manhood". Poor Hank (for those of you who missed my post yesterday, Hank is my dog) ;)

Better scoot.

May 13, 2011 - Msg 83968: Goood morning one and all in the porch family!

Tis a bit crisp at 60* and a cloudy day here on my part of the porch. A Happy Friday to all and I hope you have a great weekend lined up.
Will be going to the FIL's yet again for another cookout. Now, it's HIS birthday! LOL!

Boo - Ok, time to heal heal Hank's ego. LOL! Make him feel like the the big dog! Maybe get him a spiked collar! Or a big ol' meat bone that's three times his size! LOL! He's gotta get his "manlyness" back somehow.

I've got another actor who played dual roles on TAGS. Mr. Hendricks, the butter and egg man from "Aunt Bee's Invisible Beau" was the same actor that sold Andy's church the church organ that Clara wanted so bad in the color episodes.

Ok, better do a little research and then I think I will call it an early day! Y'all have a great day and I will see if I can make it back for lunch!

May 13, 2011 - Msg 83970: Good afternoon, porch. Just checked out the pond, and can't locate three of my new fish, and most worrisome, can't locate Goldie, the one my grandson chose a few weeks ago, the one that turned out to be so beautiful once I released him in the pond. That miserable bird has been back, I just know it! I'd like to get my hands on him and yank a knot in his neck. My son suggested getting a paintball gun and setting up an ambush. I'm a good enough shot that I'd get him, and the paintball wouldn't injure him. Sure would destroy his pride though, if he had a big purple splotch somewhere on his white pristine body. He'd have a sore spot as well, just in case he started to forget. Only problem, he just drops by without warning, every few days, and I can't imagine sitting in a window for hours every day, waiting to ambush that stupid bird. I'm thinking seriously about getting a Scarecrow Sprinkler - it's on the job all the time. The wretched pile of feathers!

Poor old Hank! He'll be a happier pup in the long run, though. No more pains of unrequited love when some little girl dog is wearing that special perfume. I'm guessing he'll get into a lot less trouble, as time passes and his testosterone levels fade away.

Well, off I go. I may just run to the water gardens store and get that Scarecrow Sprinkler. Or not. I'm pretty tired, and tomorrow is another day. Blessings, y'all! --Romeena

May 13, 2011 - Msg 83971: Good afternoon, Porch

Well...'bout to call it a day and fold up the historic tent. Might get in some fishing this weekend or just hang around the FIL's for some good patio sittin'. I'll take y'all with me.

Ro - I'm sorry to hear about your fishies. Doggone it, set up a check point chicky or deputize some of the neighbors for a 'round the clock watch and see if you can't use a paint heater! Good luck in fighting it with whatever you decide!

Boo, MDC, Asa, Possum, SPOT, Rafe, TOM, Maude and the whole porch sittin' folk, have a great night and maybe I'll get to drop in sometime this weekend Have fun y'all!

May 13, 2011 - Msg 83972: Well, here I am on a Friday night...waiting for someone to show up and walk downtown with me. I'm in the mood for a lemon phosphate from the diner, and some good conversation. Guess everyone went off to Mt. Pilot to see that Glenn Ford movie.

Yes, Ro, Hank will be much happier in the long run and so will his sister, Madea. He doesn't bother her other than wanting to play too rough and he gets pretty aggressive with her, particularly at feeding time. I have already seen a difference in him today..less rough play and he seems calmer without the raging testosterone (do they call it testosterone in dogs?).

You mean that darned bird got more of your fish, Ro?! Boy, he really needs to be taught a lesson...somehow. Maybe the scarecrow sprinkler will do the trick. "Maybe it will...but maybe it won't!". Good luck in finding a solution.

Hope you get some fishin' in this weekend, JM...catch one for us. :)

Think I will retire to my room with a good book. I am reading one now that is so, so helpful. I am really loving it. I forget the name right now but I am going to share it with you later because it really is quite a book...it looks at spiritual disciplines that have been practiced in the church over the centuries...like prayer, meditation on scripture, fasting, humility, etc. Some really encouraging writings.

See you all tomorrow. Have a wonderful evening!

May 14, 2011 - Msg 83974: Good evening, porch. Or more accurately, good morning. It's actually just after midnight. I'm headed for the ironing board, as I'm planning to be up around seven. I'm going to pick up Eloise and we're going out to Southlake to a grandson's baseball game, a double header, I think. Jerry will put her wheelchair in the car, and David will be at the ball field to get it out for us, and we'll get her to the stands somehow. The park is very nice, with sidewalks and ramps, and a nice smooth area where we can set up folding chairs and can park her w/c. Where there's a will, there's a way.

I had a nice surprise on my front porch this afternoon, when the brown truck delivered a package from Wayside Gardens. My daughter had sent me a rhododendron bush! I've always loved them, have never owned one. I'll have to get Joe to plant it for me, because I want to be sure it survives. It's a very healthy, large specimen and I want to give it every benefit.

Well, I'm off to bed. Blessings, everyone! --Romeena

May 14, 2011 - Msg 83979: Good evening, porch. Back from grandson's baseball double-header. They won both games, and he pitched the second one. Did a good job, too. We had a good time - Eloise is such a trooper. Big old leg brace, wheelchair and all, she was right in the middle of things. Gotta love her!

When I got home this afternoon, I went over to the water garden store and bought a Scarecrow Sprinkler. Came home and assembled it, hooked it up to water and set it up, aimed at the pond area. Tested it myself - walked into its field of vision and got wet! Exactly what I had hoped for. It's really impressive, much hissing and spitting, and strong water jet shooting out. If I was a big old marauding great egret, I'd make tracks! I wouldn't stay around to poach helpless little fish out of that pond. So, now I'm watching from my window, to see just what all does set it off. I'm wondering if the small birds and the squirrels will trip it. Squirrels, probably so. Cats, I hope so. Big hateful egrets, it had better! If it doesn't, I'm going looking for a paintball gun!

Well, Toye Starr just told me she's hungry, and it is after six, so I suppose I'd better get her dinner for her. Rotten little kid.

Blessings, porch! --Romeena

Bruce and I ate chinese today but I didn't bother to read my fortune. We went for a drive in the country just before sunset and it was beautiful...very serene..saw pastures with cows and horses right by coast. It was really lovely, but over too soon.

Now I will grab a book and head to bed. See you all in the morning.

May 15, 2011 - Msg 83989: Good Sunday porch, just stopping by for a minute. Gosh, everyone must be off taking a nap today.

Been to sunday school and church today and then out to lunch with the family. We had a guest speaker today as our church honored the Tennessee Baptist Children's Home. They have about 7 or 8 campuses across the state and minister to abused, neglected or orphaned children off all ages. Our church is a sponsors of their ministy. The President of the Home came and spoke about the programs as well as his testimony about how he came to be the President of the organization. He also told us they do not rceive any money wantsoever from the state, local or federal governments and receive no grant money. The program is soley supported through churches, donations and such. I thought that was pretty cool.

Dinner menu will be: roast beef sandwhiches, SLAW, home made french fries. red velvet cake for dessert. tea, kool aid or lemonade to drink.

Possum, I want a ballon and a prize please.

Prayers and blessings to all.

May 15, 2011 - Msg 83990: I've not heard of the Tennessee Baptist chilren's home, surprisingly. We have one in our area called "South Texas Children's Home", that is supported by the church and donations. They do so much good in our area. They even offer counseling services for families, free of charge or for donation.

I went to sunday school but had nursery duty during the morning service. I had three little boys, between 1 and 2...several power struggles in that group, I assure you! So funny.

Came home and ate leftovers, then took a short nap on the couch.

Now I am having a cup of tea and thinking about going out to the garage to unpack more boxes...maybe..maybe not...

May 16, 2011 - Msg 83997: Howdy, porch. I just hermitized myself today - the 15th anniversary of my Dale's homegoing. I puttered in the yard a bit, puttered in the house a bit, watched a little TAGS, played on the computer, and generally spent the day missing my sweetheart. I know, it's just a day, like any other, but it is a day of remembrance for me, I just can't help it. Tomorrow will be better.

Possum, apparently you experienced the same thing that's been happening to me. I hit the "Post your Comments" button and nothing happens. I've learned to copy the text and store it in the notepad, and then just go on and leave the porch. Every time, when I come back later, the post is there. However, if you leave and come right back, it won't be there. It appears some time later. If it ever doesn't appear, I've got the text saved in the notepad, and if it's still appropriate, it can be pasted in. (Wouldn't want to lose any of those golden words!) Hahahaha! Actually, the truth is, I save it because I'll flat-out forget what I wrote if I don't.

I declare, if it ain't one thing, it's another. Both renters have called with something needing repair, which translates to $$$. In my own back yard, something has shorted out and tripped the GFI, so my landscape lights are all out, as well as the pond pumps. The low-voltage lights are on, because they're on a different circuit, but the floods that backlight the yard for me (security) are out. As for the pumps, I can run an extension cord out to them in the morning, if necessary, but I think Ted will be able to come by in the afternoon and fix whatever's wrong, and it's so cool right now, that the fish will be okay without the pumps. What fish there are left, that is! I have one shubunkin, one pond comet, about a dozen small goldfish, and NO koi left out there. That murdering, thieving bird has about stripped the pond. I sure hope my Scarecrow water shooter will drive him away. I haven't seen him, but then I'm not at this window all the time.

Well, guess I'll head for the ironing board. I've done mostly nothing all day, and yet I'm tired. Emotion, I guess. Tomorrow is another day, and it will be better. Blessings, friends. --Romeena

May 16, 2011 - Msg 84000: Good Monday morning porch. It's a cool cloudy one on my porch.

Hey Rev. Glad you had a good time and a safe trip. Nothing like a little R&R to recharge the batteries.

Morning Ro. I will hold you up in prayer this morning. I'm sure yesterday was a tough day for ou. You always speak so wonderfully about your marriage to Dale. I'm glad you have your faith to help carry you through the tough days we all have every now and again. I'm reminded of a friend once who had questioned my faith. I was going through a tough personal crisis at the time, and he was questioning me as to why I was facing such tribulation in my life. He really thought that should not be happening to me because of my belief in God. I told him that having a belief in God does not make you immune to trials and troubles. In fact sometimes I think it just might lead you to more trials and troubles. But that faith will certainly dictate how you handle those tough times. I can't imagine dealing with some of the things we see in the world today without that faith in the Lord to sustain and see me through it. And I know that's what helps you Ro. That, and the certainty of knowing what your final destination is. I pray today will be a better day for you.

Well we better go check on Possum. She was a mess yesterday. Was it a holiday and no one told me? lol

-REV.

May 16, 2011 - Msg 84012: Good afternoon, porch! Thank you all so much for your sweet words of support, and your prayers - it all means so much. It's really a blessing to have a place like this porch, where we can come and just let our hurts and griefs show a bit, and receive comfort and support. God knew we would have troubles, so He created friends. And I just get the best feeling when I think that one of these days, REV will no longer have to say he never knew Dale, because he will know him. The day is coming, when we'll all really be together, and as the scripture says, "we shall know, even as also we are known." (I Cor. 3:12) I take that to mean we'll recognize each other, and will even recognize people we never met on earth. What a picture!

Actually, REV, he probably wouldn't have been very proud of the way I handled the first few years. It took a while to even accept the fact that I had to go on living, and even longer to decide to make the best of it. Only in the last eight years or so have I found any real joy in living again. Each day gets better, though, praise God.

Just got home - I took lunch over to Eloise and her "babysitter" - a really nice woman who helps Eloise up and down, fetches and carries, tidies up the house, does a little laundry and stays with her until Jerry gets home in the afternoon. She has been a godsend, and is quickly becoming a friend. I took Toye Starr along, of course - she loves Eloise, and the feeling is mutual. She's always a little bright spot in anyone's day. When we left there, we went to Lowe's. I needed a garden hose that can be dedicated to the Scarecrow - the one he's using right now is my primary hose, used for watering and for cleaning pond filters. I got a couple of Quick Connects too - those things are so neat. They have really helped me with the pond filters - so easy to detach and remove from the pond for cleaning. I need new ones to hook up the Scarecrow - right now he's connected direct, and would be awkward to detach. Got a couple of new hand tools and some birdseed while I was there. I love Lowe's! I can shop in there and have as much fun as in a department store - maybe more!

Well, guess I'll go play with La Starr. She's all wound up from the little outing, so now I need to wear her out a little. Then maybe early to bed tonight. I didn't sleep much last night, but I'll bet I do tonight! Blessings, friends. --Romeena

May 17, 2011 - Msg 84020: Asa is at it early this morning.

Just wanted to drop in and say good morning. Yesterday I was too busy to check in except once. Today will be another busy one. I seem to be coming down with a cold and so does Erin. I am keeping her home today. They have finished their school work for the year so she would be playing and messing around at school anyways. Friday is her last day.

We have a family reunion to go to on Saturday in La Grange (Ro will know where that is). Pretty part of Texas. Hope it isn't too unbearably hot, though.

Yesterday, I was visiting with mom, and she was telling me a story about one of her best friends growing up and it was so strange (and yet interesting) that I thought I would share it with you all. As I have mentioned, mom was from a small mining town in west virginia and everyone knew everyone and nearly everyone went to church. Well, one of mom's childhood friends was a very sweet girl named Ethyl (unfortunate name...sorry to any Ethyls lurking out there). Well, Mom moved away in her 20's and came to Texas but she stayed close to Ethyl in letters and such and Ethyl was my sister's godmother. Ethyl married a man named Bill, that she met in church and they eventually married. Turns out, though, that Bill had some serious "issues" and the marriage was never consummated. Bill had been raised by an abusive dad who abused Bill's mother. Bill's mother taught him from an early age that if he really loved a woman, he would never "defile" her. So, he had some very wrong beliefs on the matter and poor Ethyl died childless. She left Bill a few times but didn't believe in divorce and always ended up coming back to him. She died of a stroke at age 60. I just thought that was such a strange and sad story. Hard to imagine a woman being deprived of children that way when she wanted them so deperately. It's a pity.

OK, story over and so's my coffee. I think I will go take my vitamin C.

Oh, wanted to mention to Asa that I took a chance and bought some sweet corn in the produce section of the grocery store yesterday. It was the RIGHT decision! Talk about good! Hope you get some sweet corn soon. I know how much you love it and I thought of you when I cooked it.

Better git'!

May 17, 2011 - Msg 84021: Good morning, folks. Good to see you all again.

Just a rockin' here in 60* with, again, not a cloud around on my side of the porch. The last few times we had weather like this, there was always high winds. But the past few days, there hasnt been enough wind to knock over a house of cards.

Boo - That is a strange story. It always gets me how people like that have their beliefs like they are so Godly or religious, but never realize that's why God made us the way he did in the first place! Good grief, the people in the Bible didnt just appear overnight! LOL!

Might have made a major break through in some history yesterday. Wont know until I get an email back that might reveal some things. But my fingers are crossed and that email is going to be like opening a Christmas present! Here's hoping!

Better scoot. Have much inventory to go through. Y'all have a nice and stress-free day! I'll see ya back here later.

Whoops...where are my manners?? Hey to Goober-Fife! Welcome! Have a seat anytime and enjoy the visitin'!

See ya, folks!

May 17, 2011 - Msg 84028: Hey Folks,

I was reading your posts about "posting" here at the Porch and the "problems" some are having. All those problems are with your Browser...not the site. Next time you have a problem with you having clicked "Post Your Comments" and nothing happened do the following:

* Copy your comment just to be sure you don't loose it
* Do one of the following (depending on your operating system):
** Windows: Ctrl + F5
** Mac/Apple: Apple + R or Cmd + R
** Linux: F5

That will FORCE your browser to clear the cache and reload the page. That *should* fix the problem.

What you guys are seeing has nothing to do with the change at iMayberry.com. The Porch is on TAGSRWC.com so it isn't impacted.

Boy Boo, that was quite a story about Ethyl and Bill. Sad in so many ways.

Sorry you have that rain to deal with Tom. It's doing the same here, with snow still falling in the mountains. We are going to be in serious trouble when this weather breaks in the next week or two.

Well better get crackin. Lots to do today.

Prayers for all.

May 18, 2011 - Msg 84046: Good Morning, Porch family!

How the heck are ya' today? Again, it's a cool 60* and quite pleasant.

Well, not much on my end of the porch today. Mowed the FIL's lawn yesterday and have my own lawn staring at me through the window. I need to start getting a little inventory done and see if I can get some research done as well.

Hey, if any of you get parched today, SONIC Route 44's on me! Maybe it'll give Possum some time to clean out that crock! LOL!

Y'all have a great one and I'll see ya' later on.

May 18, 2011 - Msg 84047: Good morning, porch. Slept late this morning, as I have to work tonight. I'll try to get a little nap in this afternoon, but in case I don't manage that, the sleep-in will help.

Asa, have you started to build an ark yet? Sounds like you might need one soon! You folks are really at the mercy of the weather, aren't you? Of course, in truth I suppose we all are.

I'm glad somebody cleaned out that crock. I haven't had anything out of it in quite a while. Too scary!

Tom, how is your gum wrapper chain coming along? I'll bet it's really getting tough to find wrappers. I'm always on the lookout for them, but just never see any. Seems like people don't chew gum much anymore. Folks - remember to nab any gum wrappers you see, and send them to Tom. I'm sort of the "address exchange" here on the porch, and I can put you in touch with him, with his permission.

Well, gotta run. Ted pulled my lotus tub out of the pond yesterday and put it in my car. I need to take it to the water garden store this morning. It has become root-bound and isn't doing too well, so they're going to divide it and re-pot it for me. I'll get at least two plants, maybe three, out of it. It bloomed so beautifully the first two years it was in there, but hasn't done much since. It just got too crowded.

Have a wonderful day, everyone. --Romeena

possum under a Crock

May 18, 2011 - Msg 84052: Hey, porch. Got my root-bound lotus delivered, and couldn't resist buying a couple of fish while I was there. I got a big pond comet, bigger than I usually buy, but they were on sale. This one is about 6-7 inches long, and beautiful. Also bought a big shubunkin, also at a good price. I'm pretty comfortable now with putting more fish in the pond, because that Scarecrow sprinkler really works. I just wish the egret would come in, I'd sure like to see him get hit with that water cannon. Of course, it would be fun to see Shamu the cat come strolling through and get sprayed, too. I don't know why I find that so funny, but I do. I think it's because cats are always so haughty and pleased with themselves, that when you see one get sprayed and he just totally loses his cool and scrambles to get out of the spray, it's just too funny. I hope everyone here knows I would never hurt an animal - gosh, I'm the one who live-trapped six rats in the back yard and hauled them about a mile away and released them unharmed. No, I wouldn't hurt an animal, but I'm not going to sit here and let that dratted bird eat my pretty little fish, either. They're captive in that pond, and don't stand a chance of escape. I've put a piece of pipe in there that they could duck into for cover, but I'm not sure they are that smart. Obviously not, because three more disappeared after the pipe was placed. So, I got the Scarecrow. I need to name that thing. Anybody got any ideas? Something descriptive and funny. Hazel, can you come up with something?

Well, I think I'm going to go lie down. Not feeling very well, in fact I've called in sick for tonight at work. Sore throat, little fever, flashing hot and cold, achy muscles. Probably just a spring cold, but I get sick so seldom that when I do I think I'm really suffering. Ha! Actually, I probably could work, but since we're now completely hands-on with the babies, I don't want to risk making one of them sick. So, I'm keeping my germs at home.

Blessings, everyone! --Romeena

I will be updating the Quantrill project website with a new main post. It will appear tomorrow morning for those interested.

Possum under the crock.....shouldn't that be possum in the crock:)

Ro...name for the scarecrow?...well if it's scary looking....what about "Pelosi"? Now that's scary.......opps as the "REV" I shouldn't have said that. But the "truth has set me FREE"!

Pray you all are having a great day!

May 18, 2011 - Msg 84057: Glad you are staying home, Ro, but not glad you are sick. I have had a little cold the last couple days but mostly just runny nose and irritated throat. Names for the scarecrow..hmm..You could call him "Lester", which is the name of the murderous scarecrow in the 90's horror flick called, "Scarecrow"...or you could call him "The Bird-inator", or "Spitler"...(cross between 'spray' and 'Hitler').

Boo

May 18, 2011 - Msg 84058: Hahahaha! Excellent names, every one. However, REV's suggestion resonates with me most strongly. I cannot abide that woman, and to name my scary-looking device "Pelosi" just pickles me tink! Yep, Pelosi it is. Scary, and always spewing something! I love it! --Romeena

May 18, 2011 - Msg 84059: Rats. You did ask ME for a suggestion, RO. However, I've been at that 4-letter word place all day and didn't have a chance to answer. You know: I've been at WORK.
So it's already "Pelosi"? I would have chosen an Andy name. Like "Izamoto." After the judo instructor who always gets his man. Not being one to make political statements in my backyard, I would call it my "Izzy". Haha
