Quiet day on the porch. I wish I was having the kind of weather you are having, Maude. We just yearning for it here...and for rain. Hope you have a great weekend with your boy.

It was hot here (what's new) but not too terrible in the evening. Went for a drive with Sean. He wanted to try driving onto the ferry that takes us to the island and he did a great job for a first time. We saw several dolphins gracefully arching their fins out of the water...so beautiful...and the sunset! Wow. Wish you all could have seen it.

Think I will get myself something to drink and just take it easy for the rest of the evening. Preachin' tomorrow. :)

Hello porch family....A big day today. Just got in from a very long day but one I'll always remember.
If you remember I told Possum the other day I would be down in her area on Saturday. Well nosw I can tell you all what was going on now. As we walked out on Morris Island ( our same last name), a bottle was sitting there with a note in it to my daughter from her boyfriend....WILL YOU MARRY ME? Yep my baby girl is engaged. We have been working on this for a couple of months to get her there and keeping everything a secret from her.
You folks are the first that I've told.....of course my porch family:)
Well it's 1:14am and I'm bushed so I better get some rest. Got a concert tomorrow.
Love and prayers!

September 25, 2011 - Msg 85678: Congratulations to you and your dear family, REV! What great news. :) Thank you for sharing the news with your porch family!

I was just looking at Floyd's pictures of Mayberry Days on facebook. Looks like he has been having a great time. I have a question for you TAGS experts who have a better memory than me; Floyd (our floyd) was pictured with an elderly woman named Elizabeth Nacrae who was in TAGS but I can't remember who she is. She played a character named Betty Parker...but what episode was that??

Better get off here and get ready.

Boo

September 25, 2011 - Msg 85679: Typo....I meant to type Macrae, not Nacrae.

September 25, 2011 - Msg 85680: Boo, she's from the "Big Brother" episode in which Howard becomes a big brother to Tommy. She played Tommy's sister who worked as a dancer.Remember how
Howard was smitten with her & started neglecting Tommy & driving her to the dance place?
She also played Lou Ann Poovey (sp?) on "Gomer Pyle, USMC, and was the voice of Lady Fish in " The Incredible Mr. Limpett".

Wow, what an incredible way to be proposed to, Rev! Congrats to your daughter!
Y'all have a good Sunday-love to all!

September 25, 2011 - Msg 85683: Hey, Spot! So glad to hear that Miss Sherry got out and went to church today. I'm sure she really didn't feel like it, but she is so wise to keep pushing, and continue with life as it usually is. It's the best thing she can do. Bless you for being so faithful and taking care of her so sweetly. Prayers continue!

Beautiful day here, temps right around 90. Seems like a cold front, after what we've been used to. My little hummingbird friend is still around, so I'm keeping the feeder fresh. I've heard that you should pull the feeders in toward the end of September, to "encourage" them to migrate. However, I've also heard that they'll migrate when it's time, and that full feeders along the way help to strengthen them for the long flight. That makes more sense to me. I don't think God would have made them so dumb as to hang around just for a feeder, when the weather tells them to move on. They're smarter than that. So, as long as he (or she) is out there, I'll keep the feeder full. After a week or two of not seeing a visitor, I'll bring it in.

REV, my sincere congratulations to the young man who was so fortunate as to have become engaged to the beautiful Erica. It's lovely to hear you speak of the event with such joy - I just know with her background she has chosen wisely, and will have a very happy life.

Well, guess I'll go feed La Starr, and maybe find something for myself, Not really very hungry, maybe I'll just run up to Sonic and get one of their junior burgers. That sounds about right, and they're good! Just a buck, too. Or - I have some Ramen noodles - they're good, I like 'em - and they're just about 14 cents! Now, you can't ask more of a package of noodles than that.

Blessings, friends! --Romeena

Boo, 75 will be our high today. Not trying to rub it in, but in a few months you can get even with me. :)

Rev, congrats buddy, and what a neat way for him to propose. Sounds like a fine young man there.

Ro, do you know of anything out there to kill bermuda grass selectivley? I know down south y'all grow it on purpose, but here up North it's considered a noxious weed. I have it all through my blue grass and I hate it. I'd like to find something I can spray on my lawn that will kill the bermuda grass but not hamrn the blue grass.

Spot, Glad Sherry was able to get out and do some things. Bless her heart.

Possum, your a real TAGS jeenius, ain't you? Good answer to Boo's question.

Better get going. Outside jobs today in that glorious Autumn 75 degree air. LOL

It is going to be in the 90's all week and next weekend with no rain in site. Yesterday a friend tried to turn their truck around in my yard and got stuck in all the loose sand. Had to pull him out with the tractor. This is crazy. We need rain so badly here.

G'day. back later.
MDC

September 26, 2011 - Msg 85689: Hey, folks. Just a quick passin' by -- got to pick up Eloise and head out to Corner Bakery for lunch. Good sandwiches!

Asa, I don't personally know of anything to kill bermuda grass selectively, so I called my garden center friend and asked him. He said there are products that work the other way, that will kill other grasses and leave the bermuda, but he knows of nothing that will kill the bermuda and not harm the other grass. I was afraid that would be his answer - bermuda is one tough grass. In a drought, such as we have had, it can turn brown and dry and you think it's dead, but let an inch of rain fall on it and in two days it's bright green again. Actually, not many people plant bermuda alone for a lawn, but we do plant it in with the St. Augustine (carpet grass) which is indigenous to the south, including Texas. A solid St. Augustine lawn is a thing of beauty, but a scattering of bermuda mixed in softens and thickens the whole thing, and greens up so beautifully in early spring. My own lawn is a blend of the two.

Well, gotta run. I talked with my daughter in Fredericksburg this morning, and she told me a tale about her three year old, my little grandson, that is just hilarious. I'll tell you all about it later. Right now, Eloise is waiting for me. Blessings! --Romeena

P.S. Asa, one thought does occur to me. I don't know much about blue grass and its growth habits. If it tends to stay fairly short, then here's something you could try. Dig down and pull up some bermuda runners, the bigger and thicker the better. Lay out some newspaper next to them, and put the runner on top of the paper. Then with a small brush, paint the runner with RoundUp. I don't like RoundUp, and very, very rarely use it, but I do paint it on nutgrass, because it's about the only thing that will kill it. I think it might work the same on bermuda, but you have to be very careful not to get it on the blue grass, because it will kill anything it touches. If you can isolate enough bermuda runners, and paint them with the RoundUp, they will absorb it and the parent plant will die. Might work - yeah, but it might not. --Romeena

September 26, 2011 - Msg 85691: Hey there MDC and Ro.

Been one of those days. One hundred degrees with a heat index of 108 again today. Sheesh! Erin has an ear infection and I had to go do the grocery shopping today and dropped the eggs on the floor of the kitchen while putting them away...talk about a slimy mess. Then, when I went to put the cheese in the bottom drawer of the frige, it was filled with three inches of tea that had leaked out of the tea crock on the shelf above. It took awhile to take out all the drawers and clean them out and everything that was in them. I didn't even bother to cook today. We are having leftovers. Could someone PLEASE turn on a ginormous fan and send some cooler weather??

Wanted to tell you something that Sean said today. On the way to the store I was asking them what kind of fruit they would like me to buy, and Sean says very seriously, "Buy those oranges that look like they are giving birth on one end". He meant navel oranges, of course. haha...

Better get outta here.

Boo

September 26, 2011 - Msg 85692: Thanks for the info Ro. That's pretty much what I have been told also about the bermuda grass.
The problem with it for us is it's a warm season grass. It's dormant here until June and again by September. So your grass looks dead most of the year. Blue grass thrives in cool and wet but tends to go dormant in the extreme heat. By rights it should be a good marriage, but the stinking bermuda grass is just so aggresive that it takes over the whole lawn in just a few years. Oh well, susch is life.

Sounds like you had one of them days Boo. Hope your night is going better. Cute story about the navel oranges.

Guess I'll go kick on the football game.

September 26, 2011 - Msg 85695: Good evening. As I told you earlier, I talked with my daughter this morning, and she told me two hilarious stories about her three year old son. He's called Trip, because he's "the third", and it fits him. He's a trip!

First thing, she said she told him "no" about something the other day, and he put his little hands on his hips, and said to her, "Mama, please don't tell me no! It makes me feel very serious!" How she kept a straight face, I'll never know. Actually, she probably didn't.

The other thing - he has begun biting. Again. He did this when he was not quite two, and with the aid of some little swats from a wooden spoon and some scolding, she managed to make him stop. Now he's going to day care, and the biting has surfaced again. This, of course, is not acceptable. Out came the spoon, and this time, it hasn't worked. Scolding hasn't worked. Reasoning with him usually succeeds, believe it or not, because he's a very sweet and very smart little guy, but that hasn't worked either. After the third time, his mom talked with a friend whose education is in early childhood behavior. She told her the usual stuff you'd expect - he's acting out some anger or frustration or some such, and suggested redirecting him. I usually gag on stuff like that, but maybe..... Anyway, Heather decided it was worth a try, since nothing else has worked, so she told him she understood that he gets upset sometimes when the other kids don't play nice, but that he can't bite. Instead, he is to put the tail of his shirt in his mouth and bite that. Apparently he thought that was a pretty cool idea, and it seems to be working. The teacher says he just chomps down on his shirt until the mood passes! Can't you just get a picture of this mad little red-headed three year old, stomping around biting his shirt? I love it! I have to wonder how long it will last, but maybe it will carry him through the "phase" - at least I hope so.

Well, guess I'll head for the ironing board. Blessings, all. --Romeena

Speaking of TAGS cast.....last week I got a call from a venue that I do a concert at each year and ask if I could be there last Sunday night. Of course I had a concert somewhere else so I couldn't be there. The reason they wanted me to come there was they know how much of a fan I am of TAGS and Rodney Dillard was going to be there and they wanted me to go out to dinner with him. September 28, 2011 - Msg 85706: Morning...up and ready to face the day...well, not really but can't sleep so thought I would get up. ;) Woke up at 5, which is too early for me but when you can't go back to sleep, might as well get up and do something. I had one of those crazy dreams where you dream the doorbell rings and it wakes you up.

Going to be another 100 degree day here in south texas and will say that way until sunday, the weatherman said. My tomato plants are holding on but I hope they continue to. Some of my corn is already about 4 inches high!

Wanted to mention yesterday that I saw my dad yesterday and he looks worse than a week ago. he is so thin and weak now. Please remember him in your prayers this week. I don't know if I should make him go back to the doctor or just let him be. I think we are getting to the point that I am going to have to just let things run their course and that is hard to do. Please pray for his soul, especially. Thanks, friends. Some of you have prayed me through some tough times and I will always be thankful for that.

Asa, I thought about you yesterday when TVLand was showing All in the Family and it was the "change" episode where Archie tells Edith she has 30 seconds to change. HAHA...so funny and interesting how I can relate to her in that episode now. Last month i had some mood swings to almost equal hers. Just last night I was coming home and noticed that our big goat was out of the fence again and I was afraid she was going to eat my plants. Bruce has been putting up a temporary fence outside of the regular fence so they can get fresh grass but that big goat manages to get out of it so I had Sean put her back up and close the main gate. Believe me it is no easy task getting her back in the gate! I went in the house where Bruce was sitting in his recliner (he injured his back at work). I started in on him about how he has got to keep that goat where it belongs and he was kind of stunned and started to get mad. I told him, "Look, I am stressed up to here and am having a very tough day."..He said, "Well, why are you taking it out on me?!"..."Because I am. That's just the way it is going to be sometimes!". He looked at me curiously and said quietly, "ok" and he we were both fine after that. haha... He is going to have to learn how to get through this hormonal stuff or he isn't going to survive it. ;)

Better finish the coffee and start a load of laundry before I get the kids up.

Boo

September 28, 2011 - Msg 85707: Good morning Porch. Hope you are all well.

Boo, I sure will include your Dad in my prayers. And you too for that matter. You'll need them to make good desicons concerning how to deal with your Dad it sounds like. I had to go through that a few years back, and it wasn't easy.
That episode you mention of All in the Family is a laugher. I especially like the part when Archie and Edith get home from the Dr's office. Edith goes running upstairs crying. Gloria and meathead are worried and begin peppering Archie with questions. Archie tells them that the Dr. said she's going through the change and to expect her to not quite be herself for a while. But not to worry, he prescribed some pills. Gloria asks,"and those will help?", to which Archie replies, "yes, I'm supposed to take one every 4 hours". HAHAHA. Maybe you better take Bruce to see your Dr. Boo.
But seriously Boo, you sound stressed and I worry about you. Try not to get overwhelmed with stuff. I know that's easy to say, impossible to do. But you need to stay healthy. Try to find an hour or so just for you if you can. God bless.

G-F, Thanks for those great Mayberry Day reports. Very nice. Makes me feel like I was there almost. And I'll sure keep Emmett Forrest in my prayers. I've heard of him before. Sorry to read he's been ailing.

Spot, My prayers remain in force for Sherry and you brother. I'm glad she's had a few better days.

Rev, to bad you couldn't make that gig. But as you said, another time will roll around. When is the big day, or have they chosen one yet?

September 29, 2011 - Msg 85730: Good Thursday everyone, just passing by for a quick visit.

fall is in the air on my end of the porch, warm days, cool nights and the leaves are beginning to turn beautiful colors.

My friend saw the oncologist yesterday and is going to have 6 chemo treatments beginning Oct 12th. She will have 1 every 3 weeks. He told her that with the chemo and hormone treatment afterwards she has an 86% survival rate and without it is 60% surivival rate. so of course she is opting for the chemo. She is dreading the effects of the chemo but hopefully it will not take too hard a toll on her. Please keep her in your prayers.

Prayers for Miss Sherry and SPOT and everyone else.

Possum maybe Asa will loan you that neck harnass. You could hang from the closet for a few hours. Maybe that will straighten your back out and if not, you will at least be a few inches taller! :) Prayers you feel better soon.

Gotta get back to work.

Prayers and blessings to all.

*Whew*....didja get all that?!

Hi to everyone. Sorry been gone so long. Will try to be back soon.

September 29, 2011 - Msg 85734: Hey, where ya been, JM?

Feeling a little down tonight. Remember when I mentioned our dog Hank and how he was starting to get aggressive? Well, I always keep the gate closed to prevent him from chasing after anyone on foot or on a bike. This afternoon, Erin accidentally left the gate open and Hank bit a young girl who was riding home from the high school on her bike. It was a bad bite on her upper leg with a couple of puncture wounds. I was so upset for her. Luckily her dad, who soon showed up was very nice and understanding, but I was just sick about what happened to the girl. The man told me that he passes by our house alot and the gate is always shut and that he understands things happen but if you could have seen the young girl's wound. Animal control came and a couple of police officers and even though Hank was current on his vaccinations, the officer took him to be held for 10 days. Erin cried her eyes out and it was very traumatic for her but she is beginning to understand. I promised the girl who was bitten that she didn't need to ever be afraid to ride by the house again because I was going to make sure it never happened again. Hank has been getting more and more aggressive and we are going to have to have him put down. I can't bring him back here. I found out that a week ago he bit my nephew and broke the skin when he was here. I didn't know about it at the time because my niece didn't tell me but my sister did today. I can't risk something like this or worse happening again. We have too many family members and kids coming and going. I just feel so sad for Erin but I know she will be ok. It's just going to take some time. I feel for the other dog, too. She and Hank were littermates and have been together since birth. Life is sometimes hard, and that's that. I have been having some good talks with Erin and I know she will be ok. It just hurts so much to see her grieve over the dog and to think that she has a whole lifetime ahead of her to have to deal with loss, just like the rest of us. Bless her heart. Please remember Erin in your prayers tomorrow. Thanks. :)

September 29, 2011 - Msg 85735: Oh, Boo, I'm sorry.I feel for Erin & the girl who was bitten. If it helps any,I think you're doing the best thing by putting Hank down.

September 30, 2011 - Msg 85738: Thank you so much, Possum and REV. Erin is doing better. She took a bubble bath in my tub last night and told me she prayed while she was in there and asked the Lord to help her feel better, and she is. :) I also let her stay up past her bedtime and we watched a funny movie (Mousehunt). Our other dog (Madea...or Dea, as we call her for short) seems to be doing ok. She is eating and was playing this morning and fetching the ball so I think she will be fine. Actually, I think she kind of likes being the only dog because Hank was very dominating and tried to keep her from eating or getting any attention from us. I put the cat out this morning and Dea is trying to make freinds with him but he hasn't warmed up to her yet. I like the temperament of the dog and think she will make a better family pet now that we can really focus on her and she will fill the space in Erin's heart. Yesterday evening as we were sitting on the porch, that big dog literally crawled all the way in into Erin's lap. So funny looking!

Morning, Maude. I'll bring the paper.

Hey, guess what? It is in the 60's here this morning and lower humidity. It will get up to about 90 this afternoon but I can handle this. :)

September 30, 2011 - Msg 85739: Good morning, porch - finally! I've had some computer issues, very sporadic service, mostly not available. I contacted Time-Warner, they determined the problem was at their end, so a man will be here Sunday afternoon to "re-align" things, whatever that means. It's working just fine right now, but this has been going on for a couple of weeks, with the last two days being almost no service at all. It's a real problem for me, because when the computer isn't working, my phone doesn't either. That's a disadvantage to the Vonage thing, but I still enjoy saving that $70 every month. I've had to go find my cell phone in the car and bring it in so I'd have a phone. Fortunately, my alarm system has a cell phone backup, so it can still send reports of breaches whether the main phone is working or not.

Boo, I'm sorry Erin has had to face such a traumatic event. She'll handle it, though. Things like that are a part of life, and are difficult, but we survive them. I'll never forget, when I was about nine, I had a little Manchester terrier/Chihuahua mix named Tinker. I just loved that little fellow so much, and played with him all the time. One afternoon after school, I was in the front yard playing with him, which I wasn't supposed to do, because he liked to chase cars. I was supposed to stay in the back yard, but for some reason, thought I knew better than my parents. A car came by, Tinker gave chase, lost his footing and just fell headlong under the front wheel of the car. End of Tinker, and I saw the whole thing. Horrible. I cried for weeks, but it was a lesson learned. It's too bad that children don't come equipped with a little hole in their heads, so parents could just pour in things that must be learned, like obedience, responsibility, caution, and all those difficult things, but such is not the case, so we have to learn the hard way. Same with adults. God's word is there for us to read and heed, but most of the time, it takes experience for us to learn.

Animal lover though I am, I have to agree with your decision to put a stop to the problem with Hank. Maybe if Cesar Millan could pay you a visit, he could help, but since that's not likely to happen, I think the best thing is to do what you have to do to prevent another occurrence. You can take all the safeguards in the world, but if the dog is determined to bite, he's going to find a way to get out and act out his aggression. He could seriously injure someone, who could then justifiably "injure" you financially. It's too big a risk.

Well, guess I'd better get moving around here. It's a beautiful 70 degrees, a good chance to get outside and get a few things done. Boo, I'm glad you've finally gotten a little cool spell. Let's hope it lasts!

Maudie, prayers for your friend, as always. Now I must ask for prayer for my friend Jeanne, in Florida. I've told y'all about her before. She is my son's neighbor, and the sweetest little person you could ever meet. She has battled ovarian cancer for eleven years, and has now decided she is just tired of fighting. I can't blame her. Please pray for her as they engage Hospice care, that she can be kept comfortable and have some quality of life at this point. Pray for her dear husband too - he lost his first wife to breast cancer, and now after a twenty-year marriage, he's losing Jeanne too. I don't know how he remains sane. They are both Christians, I guess that's the answer.

Blessings! --Romeena

September 30, 2011 - Msg 85740: Thanks Ro, I know she will get over it and we all have to face loss. Erin is one of those children who very openly embraces animals and people and holds nothing back. She has a big heart and she give alot of love. I have watched her with pets and with little children and she is a born nurturer. She has a way of mothering everything, so losing Hank is hard but she is healthy enough to bounce back and be stronger for it. I just pray she doesn't begin to close up her heart to keep from getting hurt. Of course, I guess we all do as we get older, to some point.

I can't tell you how this whole thing made me feel. It is so painful to think that one of your animals hurt someone. You feel so responsible and just terrible about it. I don't ever want to be in that position again so we had no other choice and I thank God that it wasn't a little child who may have been more badly injured. I would have a hard time living with that.

Prayers for Jeanne, bless her heart. Sounds like she put up quite a fight. Prayers for her husband, as well, poor dear.

September 30, 2011 - Msg 85744: Hi friends,

Just checking in to tell you that everything is going well with Noah. He just had a checkup yesterday and he put on another pound, now he is a whopping 7 pounds! ;)

Did I hear you have relatives with you from WI, MDC? From whereabouts do they hail? I am just wondering if they are near me.

Prayers for your dad, Boo. And for you.

I wish I could get to Mayberry days some time. That would be one of the nicest festivals one could go to, I would guess.

September 30, 2011 - Msg 85745: MDC...wwwsurryarts.org is the web site I don't know how to turn it into a hyperlink on the porch???
I don't do the facebook thing or else I'd post some of the MANY pic's I have taken over the years...yes I do have many great ones, thank you very much!....while on the subject of links I have another one for the vintage airplane buffs it's about the B-29 bomber "FIFI". eaavideo.org then type in FIFI's flight to Oshkosh. Sterling is that in your neck of the woods?? G-F

October 01, 2011 - Msg 85746: Good morning, porch! Sterling, thanks for the update on Noah. I was wondering about that little critter - how he was getting along. Sounds like he's thriving - but of course, he would. After all, he's a Mayberry kid!

I'd love to go to Mayberry days too - maybe some day. I've hinted about it to my son - maybe he could fly us up there sometime, when I'm visiting him in Florida. We could do it as just a day trip, wouldn't even have to worry about staying overnight somewhere. I'll have to work on that idea.

Well, guess I'd better get busy. My CPA called me and threatened me with bodily harm if I didn't get my income tax stuff to her this weekend. It has to be in by Oct. 15, and she'll need time to prepare it, so I guess she has a right to bark at me. I don't know why she puts up with me. Every year, I firmly resolve to have it in by the end of February, then I mentally extend that to March, then April, etc. I always get a nice refund, so the IRS doesn't care if I drag my feet, they just get to keep my money a little longer. The CPA just automatically files extensions as needed, because she knows how lazy I am. Actually, that's not it, I just find the whole thing supremely boring, and have trouble motivating myself to get it done. You'd think the refund would be motivation enough, but it's not. I think the truth is, I sort of like having the refund out there, pending, money in the bank so to speak. One thing for sure, it's going to come in very handy right now, when it does arrive. However, I have to gather up and roughly organize all my "stuff" for the CPA before it's going to happen, so guess today's the day. Blessings, friends! --Romeena

October 01, 2011 - Msg 85751: Told ya, Possum. :) Glad you are feeling better.

Hey there Sterling. Fixin' dinner for the family. How nice. How is Noah sleeping?

Slow day on the porch, but it's Saturday. I have been outside this evening feeding the critters and looking at the garden. Something has been getting at my corn but hopefully we can save it. It is about 70 degrees out with low humidity and feels wonderful. Felt lazy today and think this old body needed a rest so I didn't do much work. I have to make myself take a day off once in awhile but I hate the aftermath of it! More laundry and dishes and picking up after everyone.

Have to go get Erin from a birthday party. She has been doing very well today and an interesting thing has happened since Hank left...something I never expected. The dog we still have is turning out to be a real peach and we could never see that with Hank dominating everything. Erin has taken her into her heart and she is doing wonders for her. Dea is one of those dogs that just kind of follows you around and takes your clues. If you want her to play, she plays, if you want her to rest at your side, she does that but is always watchful for approval. I think she is going to be quite a blessing around here. There is something just calming about a big dog that just kind of follows you around when you are doing the chores or taking walk around the place. I think it reminds me of my childhood and its a very good feeling. You should see this dog play with Erin! Erin will be on the trampoline and will call Dea and wherever Dea is she will come flying across the yard like a greyhound and in one leap, she is on the trampoline and jumping with Erin. So cute. Anyway, thanks for the prayers. The Lord is bringing some really beautiful things out of what was a very painful experience. He just never fails, does He? It's like I told Erin the day Hank got taken away, "When we give our circumstances to God, it's His job to take care of things and it's our job to trust Him."
