June 12, 2012 - Msg 88937: Thank you, Possum.

Auh2o, the only reason I had not asked is because I know you to be a private person, but know I am concerned and will support you any way I can. Praying and will be a listening ear if you need one. You can always message me on facebook, too. Nothing can make our hearts ache like our children's hurts.

Mom went back to St. Susan's today and I miss her, darn it. Just doesn't seem right around here without her.

Did I miss something (or maybe forgot it)?! What is up with ASA's daughter? sorry
BOO- that's good news about Sean. Hope that's all it was. In fact that jarred a memory, when I was growing up with the swamp cooling in the summer, we would often get stomach problems. Doc said back then that it was airborne micro-organisms causing it, being blown around by the crude evap cooler! Imagine that!
BOO- I bet Erin was getting tired of sleepin' on the ironing board! ha
BTW, how was the episcopal service?
Prayers continue for spot and sherry.
MDC

June 13, 2012 - Msg 88939: Not Asa's daughter, MDC, Auh2o's daughter has been having a struggle since December, I believe. :) So the evap cooler made you all sick...who would have thought of that? Well, we don't use those around here because the humidity is so high. Ah, the Episcopal service...It was a very small church with just a handful of elderly folks in attendance. The priest appeared to be very old, too. The service was very formal, ceremonial and it reminded me alot of the Methodist church I grew up in. I didn't know any of the hymns that they sang (guess they were exclusive to the Episcopal church). I was familiar with the creeds they recited (from the Methodist church) but couldn't say them from memory. The people I met were very friendly and welcoming and it was a peaceful atmosphere, which I enjoyed. The little chapel itself was really lovely...small with stained glass windows and old wooden benches...hard to find those anymore.

Yesterday one of our second cousins sent St. Susan a quilt that my great aunt made years ago and she brought it to me to use on my king sized bed. It is beautiful! It fits perfectly over my bed like a bedspread and is red and white. Susan is not really the "quilt" kind of person. She prefers modern decor but I told her the quilt is HERS and I am not taking it from her. Now here you see why we call her St. Susan...she said, "Julie, if it makes you feel any better, you can say it's mine and use it on your bed and if I need it back I will come get it" (which means she never will). I told her that what's mine is her and vice versa..always the way it's been with us. I have a lovely solid red quilt that she likes and I bought it for my bed but Bruce doesn't like it because he thinks its too heavy. I think I will give her that one to put on her bed. She is going to be redecorating her bedroom soon. When dad was living, he and mom shared the master bedroom at St. Susan's but now mom is in one of the smaller rooms and Susan has her bedroom back. I am looking forward to helping her paint and redecorate it. She deserves an oasis of her own, bless her. My bedroom is my place to get away. I keep it always neat, cozy and comfortable. There is no television in there and I can just shut the door and sit in a chair, read, listen to music or meditate and I have two large windows looking out over the yard and I can usually see Thelma Lou from my chair. :) Every woman needs a lovely, peaceful room to retire to when she needs to renew her strength and spirit. I am going to try to make that happen for St. Susan.

Well, better finish up the coffee and get started on the chores. Laundry needing to be done. Will bake a chicken for dinner, with carrots and new potatoes. No dessert, though...

June 13, 2012 - Msg 88940: By the way, Ro. After my last labs were done, the doc told me to stay off the Lipitor even though my cholesterol is high. I'm not exactly comfortable with that but will just try to get more exercise and eat the right things. I had prayed about it and need some wisdom concerning what to do. Maybe I need to stay off the stuff but with high cholesterol it makes me feel a little ungaurded or something.

Boo

June 13, 2012 - Msg 88941: Good morning, everyone. Boo, your story about the sweet relationship between you and St. Susan just renews the wish I've always held - for a sister. I have a brother, and I love him dearly, but when two sisters are close, there's just nothing to equal that. I'm happy for you both.

About the Lipitor - if you're looking for defense of that or any other statin, you rattled the wrong cage. I hate them, and refuse to take them. If your doctor told you to stop them, he had a reason, likely a very good one. Sounds like your liver enzymes were indicating that your liver has had enough of them. I think the jury is still out, waaay out, where they're concerned, and I believe that one of these days, we'll be seeing ads on TV encouraging lawsuits over damage done by them. Oh wait! They're already there! (Haha) They're only going to increase. In addition, I believe that the artificial sweeteners are dangerous as well, and studies have proven that they're not effective in a weight-control program. The fake stuff group typically ends up about three pounds heavier on average, over the control group which uses sugar. There probably won't be lawsuits over the fake sugars, though. The pockets are certainly deep enough, but it's hard to identify which pocket and establish guilt. The fake stuff is strictly voluntary, not prescribed, so there will be no grounds for an individual suit. No one with any authority is telling you "use this", like with the statins. Eventually, there may be a class-action suit, if neurological damage can be proven, and I believe that's coming. Just Google "aspartame neurotoxin" and you'll be appalled at what comes up. My own endocrinologist told me he was "fine with that" when I said I couldn't use them. To quote, "you're better off without them anyway, they're not good for you."

So - what to do about cholesterol? I've mentioned Cholest-Off before, it's OTC, and it works. Non-toxic, too. The hard part is remembering to take it, because it must be taken about a half hour or so before a meal. I have no trouble taking my insulin before a meal, because it is to be taken within ten minutes, but that half-hour thing is harder. Still, it does work. You can also take a niacin capsule at bedtime now and then, and it helps to lower cholesterol. Incidentally, before taking any of the herbals supplements, read up on them. A friend proudly told me she had quit taking statins, and was taking red yeast rice capsules. Fine, but what she didn't know was that stuff metabolizes into a statin in the body! Not only was she still getting a statin dose, but she was determining the dose. It's natural, take all you want, right? Eeek! You gotta be careful.

Well, I've babbled enough. Gotta get busy around here. Praying for Spot and Miss Sherry. Anybody know anything yet? --Romeena

June 13, 2012 - Msg 88942:

REV- you around buddy?
Busy with concerts I know, and thanks again for your witness.
Til later,
MDC

June 13, 2012 - Msg 88943: I wish you had a sister, too, Ro. I'm glad you have Eloise. :)

I tend to agree about the Statins but here's the thing... After having what the "experts" say is high cholesterol for all my life (first tested at age 10)...with a bad LDL/HDL and triglycerides, I first went on Lipitor 11 years ago. Immediately everything began falling into "normal" levels (of course who's to say what is actually normal for me). Doc started me on 20mg, then went up to 40mg and liver started to suffer. She dropped me back to 20mg and added Zetia and for 11 years that has worked well. I guess I feel like after having normal levels for so many years, having the cholesterol high again makes me a little nervous. It is hereditary and both my parents have/had it and lived a long life (mom still going, of course). Neither of them ever had a heart attack and both took Lipitor for many years. So, not sure exactly how I feel about it yet. For now, I will try to use the cholest-off again, even though I have the same problem about remembering to take it. I will always try and stay away from the hydrogenated fats and use the good ones. I have to exercise and lose some weight, although I find myself in the position of being a yo-yo dieter most of my life, which is very unhealthy. I do well for awhile and then it seems the cravings start to take over when I lose some weight. I am praying! I am trying to cut as much wheat out of my diet as possible, which I think helps most of all when it comes to losing weight and keeping blood sugar within normal parameters. Also trying to remember the acvocados, olive oil and garlic.

Better get back to the laundry...

Its going to be another hot, brown summer. I really miss grass.

June 15, 2012 - Msg 88965: Hi, Porch!! Boy, is it good to be home! Surgery is over and done with, and apparently was quite successful. I checked in at 6 a.m. yesterday, surgery was at 7:30, I was in my room in time to have some jello and juice for lunch. Have had absolutely no pain. Soreness a-plenty, but no pain. In case that sounds confusing, I'll explain. Soreness is when, if you leave it alone, it leaves you alone. Nothing hurts until you bother it. Pain is when you're lying down or sitting and minding your own business, not bothering anything, and it still hurts. Big difference. Moving my head is not an option for me right now, so therefore no pain. I have a very big, tall, hard cervical collar on, with bases against my back and chest. My head has about an inch of movement in any direction. I feel (and look) like a very large, stupid turtle, but at least a turtle can move his head in and out of his shell.

Seriously, this has been a piece of cake. I finally took one 325mg Tylenol last night, just to satisfy my nurse, who was so concerned about my pain level. She was doing her job, and I knew she needed to chart some sort of pain intervention, so letting her chart that Tylenol proved that she had addressed the issue.

As for Toye Starr, my daughter and her soon-to-be husband have been here all along, and are trying their best to pamper me. They have pampered her as well, because she went from door to door, not whining, just making a little moaning sound, looking for me, and it broke their hearts. They have been giving her a lot of special attention.

I am so sorry to hear of the progression of Miss Sherry's cancer. I had such high hopes that the battle was being won. I'm not giving up on that idea, and will continue to pray. We serve a mighty God, and we don't know what He has in mind. All we can do is trust Him. This we know - He loves us, and wants only what is best for us. Sometimes what we think is best is not the same as what He knows is best. That's where faith and trust enter.

Well, I think I'm going to go rest a little while, and love on my ecstatic little baby doggie. She just ran in circles all over the house when I got home, carrying a toy in her mouth the whole time. Toye Starr - she was well named.

Love you guys --Romeena

June 15, 2012 - Msg 88966: Oh, MDC, to answer your birdbath question. My friend Joe, who installed my sprinklers, ran a little line off one of the zones to the birdbath. It's very simple, just a bit of tubing that we wired to the base of the birdbath, curled it up and over the edge and placed a rock on it to hold it down. The birds use the rock to stand on, and drink the fresh water as it comes out of the tube. The end of the tube has to be above water level, or it will siphon back out, because there is a similar tube that extends a few inches into the pond, to replace evaporation loss. Those two lines run whenever that particular zone runs. Very convenient, but does run off the sprinkler, and if you don't have an irrigation system, that is a problem. --Romeena

I can't imagine six weeks in this thing, but if I come out standing up straight again, it will be worth it. --Romeena

June 15, 2012 - Msg 88976: Haha...funny mental picture, Ro. Hope you finally get straight! ;) Wish I was there to keep you company and maybe we could watch some TAGS. You know something we have never done on this porch that might be fun? We should decide on a particular episode to watch on DVD at a certain time and all watch it at home at the same time. Then we could come on the porch and discuss it or have a quote-a-thon from the ep afterward. Might take a little effort to get everyone to find the same ep and watch it at the same time but might be fun to try. We all used to do more of that when TAGS was on every night at the same time on TVLand or TBS.

Well anyway, Ro, I can send over some cyber-soup if you tell me what kind you would like. I can make a dessert, too...with no effort at all. ;)

Went out to eat with Bruce to a Chinese buffet kind of place. Not exactly great but filled us up. Now its time for a shower and a good book...

He appeared in two TAGS episodes; as "Farley Upchurch" in The Legend of Barney Fife and as "Luke" in The Rehabilitation of Otis. But his most famous television role was as "Sam Drucker the shopkeeper" on Petticoat Junction, Beverly Hillbillies and Green Acres.

Romeena, I'm so glad to learn your surgery went well. When you mentioned that Toye Starr was moaning looking for you, my eyes got a little misty there. I'm a true dog lover at heart. By the way, did they give you a local or general for the surgery?
Speaking of anesthesia, there was this wife who visited her husband in the hospital right after his surgery. Groggy from the anesthesia, he opened his eyes slightly, saw her sitting there and said "I didn't realize just how gorgeous you are". That made her smile widely. He then closed his eyes and fell asleep. After about another hour, he opened his eyes fully, saw his wife still by his side and said "Gee, you look nice". The wife got upset and said "What? I'm no longer gorgeous?" His reply was "The drugs are finally beginning to wear off".

HAPPY FATHER DAY to all the dad here

TOM

June 17, 2012 - Msg 88994: Happy Father's Day to all of you fathers. Prayers for SPOT and Sherry.

This is the first Father's Day without my father but it's ok. Love is eternal and I know he feels that where he is today. :)

June 17, 2012 - Msg 88995: Happy Father's Day to all you fellers. My dad has been gone nine years now - he passed on Father's Day in 2003. The date would be off by a few days, but I've always just used Father's Day as the landmark. I still miss him, but I can't help but be happy for him. He wanted to go "home" so badly, and now he's there, with my mother, and above all, with his Lord. What a blessing!

I just finished a great breakfast. Robbi and Richard are spoiling me terribly, and I may just have a little tantrum when they get ready to go home. I don't know what I would have done without them.

I learned something yesterday. On my old computer, I could go to View up at the top, then click Page Source, and it would go back to the "scratch" copy of the current page. That way, I could see what error I had made whenever I broke the porch, and could fix it. When my computer crashed a couple of years ago, and I got a new one, that Page Source option was no longer there under View. Very annoying. Then yesterday I thought to ask my computer guru friend, who loaded the new one for me, if there was a way to get there. Yep. You just right-click on the page, and the menu options that include Page Source will pop up. Yay! Now I can fix the porch if I break it again. I don't know why I hadn't tried that. I know very well that right-click frequently brings up wonderful things, but I just hadn't applied it to this problem. Oh well, now I know.

Still no pain from the surgery. My neck and shoulder muscles are aching and tight, because the brace is pushing my head back where it belongs, and those muscles are having to vacate their accustomed position, and they're not happy about it. However, it will get better. It will help when this brace goes away and I can actually move my head and stretch and flex those muscles.

Well, I think I'll go rest a while. Blessings, porch. Prayers for Spot and Miss Sherry. --Romeena

June 17, 2012 - Msg 88996: Boo, Your painting adventure sounded like a Laural & Hardy skit...Sometimes ya just need to "CALL THE MAN"!..haha (They make it look sooo easy on HGTV don't they & it all gets done in a half hour too!.No spills no streaks no runs.)
I thought Bill Bixby was a good Dad on Courtship of Eddie's Father..How about Clark Griswold?.. All he wanted to do is get his family to "Wally World" for a Vacation..He only had a FEW problems..haha

As for Fathers Day, Wish I could have told my Dad "Thanks for the Life Lessons". "Life is not easy or fair but it's your's to embrace!. I miss his "Dadisms".....

Well, the Father's day menu for dinner is chicken fried steak, mashed taters and cream gravy, buttered corn, asparagus and sweet tea. Chocolate cake for dessert.

June 18, 2012 - Msg 89003: Morning porch, just stopping by for a visit as my work day gets started.

Glad you are doing well Romeena, I Know you are glad to have the surgery over and are on your way to recovery and feeling better.

Attended my nieces wedding on Saturday. A sweet little ceremony and reception. They have known one another for 7 years (she is 21 and he is 25) but have a lot going for them (she has associates degree and he has a degree and is a certified diesel mechanic) and both have jobs) have been able to put a down payment on a house and will have good family support systems so I think they will do well. I worry about young folks getting married these days. sooo hard in so many ways.

Big Prayers for SPOT and Miss Sherry and everyone else.

Thanks for the Fathers Day dinner BOO. My Dad died in 1970 when I was 11. I have good memories of the little time I did have him though.

Well better get busy, times a wastin'.

Lunch menu will be: tuna salad sanwhiches with sweet baby gerkins, chips, Mr. Cookie Bar for dessert, tea, lemonade to drink.

Prayers and blessing all around.
Big Maude

Well SPOT and other NASCAR porchsters, looks like Dale Jr. finally ended his dry spell, I think he was so dry he thought he was living in Texas...Right Boo? Next week is a road course? That just ain't right! It should be a road course thru the hills & mountains like the good o'l days...
Maude...save me a Mr. Cookie Bar for this afternoon, when I get my sinking spell.....G-F...

June 18, 2012 - Msg 89005: Sorry Ro, that was suppost to be SPOIL not Soil unless ya want them to work on your garden then it was'nt a typo...haha

June 18, 2012 - Msg 89006: You got that right, G-F. Everything has turned brown already and no rain! We might get some rain later in the week from a tropical depression that's in the gulf...hopefully. All I got out here on my little farm is sand, stickers and dead burmuda grass! Hey, I was at a friend's house who is in Haiti this week, and I went to check on her chickens and guess who I saw for the first time? Bernie's dad. He looked exactly like Bernie.

Good to see ya, Maude. Sounds like you are doing ok.

Better git...I have to drive Erin to church camp today.

June 18, 2012 - Msg 89010: We'll tolerate no running away! Life gets hard to handle sometimes, but running away solves nothing. Stay and fight. We'll help!

Yes, Rob and Richard are really spoiling me. I guess they're got to head home tomorrow, and I will definitely miss them. However, they've got me on my feet and functional. Not being able to drive my car for six weeks is a downer, but I can understand the restriction. So, I'll put up with it.

I am so stiff and sore, I feel like I've been beaten with a bat. My throat and neck muscles are unbelievably sore, but this too shall pass. Still no pain. When I'm sitting or lying still, nothing hurts. When I move, and disturb those angry muscles, it hurts, but stops as soon as I get still. God is good!

Well, I think I'll go lie down for a little while. Blessings, porch! --Romeena

HI ALL! Had a busy weekend with my 2 out-of-state sisters here to visit dad, then Monday was my 36th anniversary!
Hot here too TOM. 113 to 115 today and the rest of this week! Yes, that's dang hot! ha
Hey to Maudie, spot, Ro, boo and all.
Should we leave TWO quarters for Maude? (get it, two posts = 2 quarters) errr ha
BOO- glad Erin was OK to go to camp.
Possum- nice song, thanks.
Prayers continue for RO, Sherry and all ailin'.
So G-F, is watchin' em change the menu at McDonalds the modern version of changin the marquee at the Grand? lol
Praise God,
MDC

June 20, 2012 - Msg 89022: Thanks for the sympathy, G-F. I certainly hope things aren't as bad as last summer, and with those terrible fires in Texas! Forgot to mention the other day about the earthquake in north Texas...wondered if Ro felt it.

MDC, it seems like Erin is having a good time at camp. Our pastor, who is one of the sponsors, called me today to tell me that someone stole 4 pairs of new shorts out of Erin's suitcase so they had to go to the store and buy her some shorts. Seems like every summer that happens to somebody.

Better think about heading for the ironing board...full day of things to do tomorrow.

June 20, 2012 - Msg 89023:

Maybe one evening they could review the Commandments! ha

June 20, 2012 - Msg 89024: MDC..haha Exactly! So have some buscuits & gravy on me...As you guys discuss the worlds problems see if ya can figure out why you guys & Boo arn't getting any rain...Thelma Lou is hankering for some GREEN grass to chew on..
Boo, The earth shaking you had was'nt a earthquake, it was Romeena shaking in her chair cause she is not alowed to get out and about!..
Just a theory.....G-F.....
Also Boo, maybe some one wanted Erin to dress pioneer style, cause a pair of shorts made pioneer style gotabe better than a pair of the store boughten ones!...haha
That G-F he sure is a study!!

June 20, 2012 - Msg 89025: and crazy

June 20, 2012 - Msg 89026: Yes, MDC, its a church camp but that's just the way some kids are. Not all kids that go to church camp are nice, Christian kids, but maybe being there will influence them for the better. When I was a sponsor at youth camp a few years ago, someone stole money from another kid's suitcase and the speaker at the church services in the evening spoke about it to the kids and the offender confessed and gave back the money. Pastor said yesterday that they were going to do a suitcase search of the other campers in that bunkhouse and see if they found erin's shorts but I doubt they will find anything. It could have been one of hundreds of kids. Someone could have easily slipped in from another bunkhouse looking for something to take.
That's an idea, G-F...they coulda made shorts pioneer style and gone out and caught a quail for dinner. ;) Probably would have been alot better than the camp food, from what i hear. The camp for the week only cost 150.00 so you can't expect "pounded steak" like at Morelli's, i guess. The kids always have a great time, though. Unfortunately this year, Erin's best friend had to go home from camp with a fever, but she has other friends there. I am looking forward to seeing her back on Thursday. It is way too quiet around here without her (never thought i would complain about that!) ;)

Yesterday I brought home some home movies from St. Susan's of trips we took to Colorado with Dad. It was a little depressing, not only because Dad is gone now, but to see how quickly the years flew by. One of the tapes I watched was around the time I first started coming to the porch and Bruce and I took mom and dad on a December vacation to Colorado. Sean was about 7 and Erin was only 1 and had just started walking. Poor dear looked like a bald little alien but so sweet. That turned out not to be such a great trip because Erin got sick with a virus and mom fell one night in Buena Vista Colorado and we ended up cutting the trip short and heading home. Looking at the movies, though, we appear to be having a great time for the most part. It was good to see Dad walking and talking but wow, did he look young just 9 years ago. He was chubby and had a lovely full head of show white hair. He was skin and bones when he passed away. I am very happy I have those movies of him. We had some really great trips with him. Of course, we tend to forget the times when he was being a pain in the...uh, nether regions. ;)

Well, looks like I will be making a trip to the vet this week to have Dad's old weinie dog finally sent to the happy doggy hunting ground. She is about 15 now and outlived Dad, but she is incontinent and lungs are starting to fill with fluid because the old heart just can't keep up anymore. She did a wonderful job of cheering up my Dad's spirits and helping him through his suffering, even stayed right on the bed with him his last night one earth. It's time to send her on and ease her suffering. Please pray that Mom takes it well. I know it will be like letting go of a piece of Dad.

Well, things to do...hey, G-F, it looks like it might rain today...yahoo!

Boo

June 20, 2012 - Msg 89027: Good morning, porch. You cannot imagine how hard it is to type when something is holding your head up high and rigid, and when you try to look down, all you can see is your own cheekbones! I'm waaaay sick of this brace, but it has to remain for a little over five more weeks. I can take it off momentarily for washing my hair in the shower, but have to stand very straight and not let my head move. Oh well, this too shall pass.

Boo, I sympathize with your situation with your dad's old doggie. Yes, your mom will probably have a hard time with it, but maybe it will help to tell her how much the dog wants to go and find him. And you know what? I believe that she will! I do not accept that God went to all the trouble to make these creatures that share this earth with us, only to have them just vanish into nothingness when they die. He forged the special bond that many of us have with our pets, and I just don't believe that it's all for nothing. I think the old doggie will find your dad, and he will be glad to see her. Psalm 150:6 says "Let everything that has breath praise the Lord." To me, that implies that in that perfect world, in which the children of God will live one day, the other breathing creatures will be there as well, praising Him along with the rest of us. Being innocent and not guilty of sin, animals don't need redemption and will just naturally be there. Well, anyway, that's what I think. It works for me.

I've got a sore muscle in the side of my neck that is giving me a fit! Even the slightest movement sends it into a spasm. It's even hard to swallow. Guess I'll call the doc and see if he would recommend heat or cold, or whatever. It's about two inches away from the incision, so I should be able to put a cold pack or something on it.

Blessings, friends! Hope everyone's weather smooths out and you have some pleasant days. It's nice here right now, just 78, but it will climb as the day goes on. --Romeena
