December 17, 2013 - Msg 95835: Love those links! Yep, nobody could tell a story like Andy.

Looks like I'm not the only one dragging in here late with all the decorations. David was here today, got my outside lights working again after the limbs took them out. He also put the top on the tree, so now I can finish decorating it. It's almost done! I had to leave the fragile ones off until he was finished, because he has to lean into the tree a bit to put that top in place and I didn't want him to have to worry about breaking something. He also set up and installed a new 5-in-1 printer I got this week. My old one prints fine, but the scanner was failing, and therefore I couldn't send a fax. It would say it was sending, but the recipient would call and say there were blank spots on the pages. It would cost more to fix than to replace, so I replaced. I can't believe how cheap those things have gotten! It's an HP, it prints, copies, faxes, scans, will print front and back, and will handle legal size. All that for less than I paid for my very first printer years ago, an old dot matrix, which I thought was just the coolest thing ever, and all it did was print. Barely. Anyway, David got it in place, set up, registered, etc. All of that, and he took me to lunch too. Can't beat a kid like that!

Boo, I hope Erin pulls up out of this soon. Brittney has been sick too, all week. High fever, coughing, generally miserable, but is doing better today.

I have never, ever, been this late getting my Christmas stuff done. And there's another verse to that song. I'm not going to be this late again. Next year, it will be done before the first of December, and I don't care when Thanksgiving is. This is ridiculous.

I will have at least part of tomorrow to finish up. I have to take the daughter of a friend to the dentist, but that won't take but a couple of hours. The daughter broke her foot and ankle, and is in a wheelchair right now, so she moved in with her mom. The mom (my friend) can't afford to take off work to get her to the dentist, so I told her I'd take her. At least it's all right here in town, she doesn't go to a dentist in Dallas or some such. My friend's life is a constant struggle, bless her. Her son is living with her because he's got cancer, not much life expectancy left, and now the daughter with the broken foot. The least I can do is take that girl to the dentist. I don't know how she does it, but she just keeps smiling.

Dale used to say we should always remember to thank God for what we have, but sometimes we need to stop and thank Him for what we don't have, as well. I think he was right.

Blessings, friends! --Romeena

G-F, that rusty chevrolet video was very funny. Thanks for posting it.

Well I see that our TOM has returned. I'm glad you started posting again. I was worried about you.
Just like you, I have been receiving medical treatment for the past month. And although everything is healing nicely, it is a slow process. Unfortunately, this upset me because I had to cancel my plans to visit relatives in the USA for Thanksgiving.
Come closer so I can tell you a secret. While you were gone, G-F was goofing off here. And since you are the sergeant here, I think you should do something about. Maybe make him do 100 pushups with someone sitting on his back and using just one hand.

SPOT, sorry I missed out on lunch. Maybe tomorrow we can head out to the Cracker Barrel and have some fun with you know who.

Romeena, to avoid being late with your decorations and tree for next year, I have the perfect solution; leave everything up all year. I have seen a few houses with outdoor lights all year round.

Finally, the Mega Millions Lottery drawing tonight is estimated at $636 million. That is over one half a billion dollars! If no one wins tonight, I think I might drive to the USA to purchase some tickets.

I'd be willing to bet when that person goes to the stores to buy things during the Christmas season they don't ask to pay the "regular" price instead of the Christmas sale prices...I'm just sayin'.. December 18, 2013 - Msg 95842: Ro, my parents had some good friends that they were visiting from out of town years ago. Well, it was during the summer and my mom couldn't get over that in the guest room, there was an artificial Christmas tree, totally decorated, and covered with a sheet. The lady of the house said it seemed crazy to redo it every year. Maybe that's not such a bad idea but moving it would cost you some ornaments, I would think. ;)
Sorry to hear Brittney has been sick. Sean is pretty sick now but it seems like the worst of this bug is over in 48, so hopefully he will be feeling much better by tomorrow.

So sad about your friend, Ro. I'm glad you are there to help out some. That quote from Dale is so true!

Crazy that folks would complain about other people's freedom to celebrate Christmas. Ridiculous but I can see the whole house decorating thing becoming obsolete someday, sadly. I have noticed a decrease in it over the years in my area. Its no fun to go looking at Christmas lights anymore because they are getting few and far between.

Still taking care of sick kids. Erin is much better but now Sean is in the middle of it. Looks like they will both be fine by Christmas, so that is good. So far Bruce and I are doing ok.

Better git!

December 18, 2013 - Msg 95843: Yeah, that "petition" thing is just ridiculous! On the upside, the vitriol and venom that some people show over any word or anything having to do with Christ, kinda proves the truths in the Bible and that He is Lord, doesn't it. You don't see people getting all hate-filled against Mohammed, Buddha, or any of those other jokers, do you?!

December 18, 2013 - Msg 95844:
TOM, I was hoping you were wrong about posting that the Mega Millions Lottery had two winners. But the news proves that you are correct. Aw shucks. They were predicting that had no one won yesterday, the next jackpot would have been close to $1 billion!!! That would be worth a trip to the USA for a day.
Speaking of lotteries, did you hear about the Canadian who won $40 million in the Canadian lottery and announced he was giving it all to charity? I'm going to have to change my name to Charity and contact him. LOL
I was listening to Bill Nye the Science Guy on Canadian television yesterday. He was explaining the odds of winning that lottery so that any layman could understand. With odds of 1 in 249 million to win the Mega Millions Lottery, you have better odds of being struck by lightning twice in one day!

G-F, that petition does not surprise me in these current times. What could be next? Mayb silence all church bells and sound proof all churches so the singing can't be heard outside? I wonder if Christians are being taken advantage of since they often don't actively resist like some other religions do.

from Poor Horatio

December 18, 2013 - Msg 95845: I have often thought that too, Sterling. Jesus said it himself, "Because they have hated me, they will hate you". Sad, but what we are seeing is only confirming the words of Jesus, isn't it?

You PH, what really concerns me is that it the political frenzy to separate church and state, the state is beginning to get involved with the freedom of the church. We are already hearing about pastors who are being hauled into court for offending someone with convictions. Scary to think where that might lead.

Well, all my plans to have a stress-free Christmas are not exactly coming to fruition. Taking care of two kids with the flu, and holding down everything else while Bruce works is not exactly stress-free. I am thankful that they are getting better and that Bruce and I aren't sick. Hopefully all will be well for Christmas. :)

December 18, 2013 - Msg 95846: "Yes" PH, not "you"...

Boo

December 18, 2013 - Msg 95847: Yes, PH, that's exactly what happens. The Bible says in Romans 12:18, "If it be possible, as much as lieth in you, live peaceably with all men." We try to do that, and our rights get trampled on. The Muslims, on the other hand, who are commanded by their prophet to convert the infidel, "by the sword if necessary", will scream and throw bombs if someone crosses them. Even so, I think I prefer Christ's way, and I know you do as well.

Lotteries. I don't put any money in a lottery, as a rule. Oh, once in a while, just for fun I'll buy one ticket. I do enter the Publisher's Clearinghouse Sweepstakes faithfully, but there's no money involved there. This week, though, I bought one raffle ticket, for $100. The raffle is being held by a local Cadillac dealership, only 1500 tickets will be issued, and the proceeds go to charity. That I will do, now and then. I consider it a charitable donation, it's deductible, and the odds are (obviously) 1 in 1500. The prize is a brand-new Cadillac, cherry red with black leather interior, and fully loaded. I would love to have that car, but if I don't win, it's okay. I've still got a nice car, even if it is nearly ten years old. Yep, that's about as close to gambling as I get.

Well, I've got about an hour left to finish that tree, and then I can relax. Blessings, friends! --Romeena

December 19, 2013 - Msg 95852: Mr. Sawyer, I usually don't bother worrying about people who do things like that big letter A, and the like. As you said, it looks awful. Most people will have the same opinion. Generally speaking, if you give folks like that a little time, they'll do a pretty good job of making themselves look foolish. Even the folks who aren't actually Christ-followers have some inkling somewhere in their hearts, especially at this time of year, and usually will take offense at something that disrespectful. I know, I'd like to just slap them silly myself, but it's not what Christ said to do, and He had his reasons. The high road is always best, and He knew it.

G-F, that's a funny story. "I can still see that walker streaking by...." What a mental picture! Hilarious!

Well, the tree is pretty much finished. I'm tired, and in the morning will get up and put away all the bins and unused stuff. Oh, I'll probably put a few more ornaments on, but they're really not needed. It's just that I have waaay too many ornaments, and they're all pretty or meaningful or both, and I have a hard time putting them away instead of on the tree. They only get to come out and be enjoyed once a year, so I feel guilty putting them back in the closet.

I know I have too many, but that happens when you've celebrated 55 Christmases in your own home. You buy a few each year, and I take very good care of my ornaments, so have nearly all of them. Also, I have a lot that were my mother's. There are a few that are over 75 years old. Those are carefully wrapped in cotton, placed in covered coffee cans, and stored on a high shelf in a closet. No damage will befall them there. Maybe I'll take a few pictures and put them on Facebook.

Well, I'm off to bed, before Toye Starr has a little bitty fit. She's ready for bed! Blessings, porch. --Romeena

December 19, 2013 - Msg 95853: Oh, and as for the idiot who is petitioning to have someone's Christmas decorations removed, that's just someone looking for their fifteen minutes of fame. That little loophole about the church and state thing, with a cross on government property, etc. - well, the Supreme Court is against us on that. However, so far, on our own property my answer to anyone who objects is simple. "Darlin', if it bothers you, why just avert your eyes when you pass my house, so you won't be offended." --Romeena

December 19, 2013 - Msg 95855:
G-F, the link you posted in Msg 95839 brought back some pleasant memories for me. Some years ago, I watched a movie called "Joyeux Noel". It was based on a real life incident that occurred on Christmas Eve, 1914, during World War 1. That is when German, French, English & Scottish soldiers laid down their weapons in an unofficial cease fire to celebrate Christmas together on the battlefield. They actually set up Christmas decorations, sang Christmas songs, and exchanged gifts with their "enemies". They even prayed together and played soccer. When ordered by their commanders to resume the combat, soldiers on both sides could no longer shoot at each other because of their new friendship. Unfortunately, the truce only lasted a few days. Commanders had to threaten their troops with being court martialed (with the possibility of execution) or had them replaced.
As I have mentioned here before, during my service in both the Navy and Army, my most memorable experience involved saving lives and not taking lives.

This is the same function where our beloved REV provided the entertainment every October for the last six years. It's still hard for me to go to those things, knowing he won't be back. Well folks, I'm ashamed to be living in Canada. Today, the Canadian Supreme Court has ruled that paying money for s-e-x is not a crime. This means that although prostitution will temporarily remain in the criminal code, Parliament (the Canadian legislature) has one year to come up with an alternative solution. Otherwise street solicitation and brothels will become legal. I can't believe it!

from Poor Horatio

December 20, 2013 - Msg 95863: I'm not at all surprised, PH, and be assured, the U.S. will not be far behind. The Bible says "Woe to those who call evil good, and good evil; who put darkness for light, and light for darkness." (Isaiah 5:20) Good is being called evil these days, and certainly evil is being called good. What kind of a world is it when a little six year old boy can be suspended from school because he planted an innocent, childish kiss on the cheek of a little girl? At the same time, on the polar opposite end of the spectrum, things like what happened in Canada can occur.

As for the legalizing of prostitution, that is now a shoo-in, with the decision just made regarding the paying of money. There's an old saying among sales people - "It's as honorable to sell as it is to buy." Therefore, if it's okay to buy, then it follows that it's okay to sell. No other way to look at it.

There are those who might point out that Jesus forgave the woman who was brought to him by the pharisees, a prostitute caught in the act. Yes, Jesus forgave her, but the last thing he said was "Go, and sin no more." He loved and forgave the sinner, but he did not condone the sin.

We are living in perilous times, and the Bible prophecies are being fulfilled, one by one. I can't imagine anything any scarier than spending a lifetime denying God's plan for salvation, then waking up after death and realizing the Bible was right all along, and it's too late. The Bible says "There shall be weeping and wailing and gnashing of teeth." Matt. 13:40-43.

None of the insanity that reigns today is surprising, really. It's all there, in the Book. Fortunately, we have the Book, and can read it, and I have - including the end! Yep, I know how it ends. God wins! And so do his children. It may be a rough ride, but as Paul said, "I know in whom I have believed, and am persuaded that he is able to keep that which I've committed unto him against that day."

OK, I'll stop now. I've probably already offended someone, but truth is truth, and the Bible is the source of truth. Trust me, there's plenty in there that bruises my toes, too. I also think it's important to note that God does not distinguish one sin from another. It's not a specific sin that he sees, it's the state of disobedience. He sees no degrees of sin. When I disobey him in anything, I'm no different than the man who murders someone. That's a tough one, and one that I have struggled with for a long time, but it's true. Therefore, I can't turn up my nose at a prostitute, because my own "little" sins are just as bad, in the eyes of God. Since I cannot be perfect, (no one can, "for all have sinned and come short of the glory of God") I will be grateful for all eternity that Jesus was willing to take my place, and pay for my sins. God is good. --Romeena

OK, fair enough, and that's exactly what we "narrow-minded" Christians do, so why can't the other side do the same thing? Still, it should come as no surprise. All of this is in the Book! Gonna watch A Christmas Carol tonight. I'll watch the one that has Reginald Owen as Scrooge. Then on Christmas eve we watch the one with Alistir Simm. I just love that show. I have already watched the one with George C. Scott. Plus just finished reading it like I do every year.

Looks like all porchsters are out and about.
For you relative "new" porchsters, when pappabear was a reg'lar here we would outfit his brown truck
with skis. So I hauled it out of the barn, Gomer tuned it up, and we are ready to go for tommow night's run!
Merry Christmas George! :)
Merry Christmas Possum! Will do.
Storms in the east. I hope power is restored soon,
and prayers for those in the Kentucky flooding.
God's peace to all!

December 23, 2013 - Msg 95892: Ha ha. I actually have one of those, G-F.(Cheesehead hat) Never worn. :)

Are any of you porchsters on Twitter? I bit the bullet and signed up. I was just too fascinated when I saw you could have conversations with celebrities sometimes(or at least, a tweet or two). I thought that might be cool.
I did already receive a reply to one of my postings from Eric Braeden. He plays Victor Newman on The Young And The Restless.
Yeah, I know, a soap opera. What's a guy like me watching soaps, you are probably asking.
Well, I haven't been watching too much recently, but I used to be really into Y&R. I can blame my brother for that one.
You see, back in the 80's when my brother was going to college, he would come home for holidays and the summer, and he would always watch Y&R(I guess it was a college thing). Well, when I wasn't out riding my bike or terrorizing the neighborhood in other ways, I would sometimes watch it with him.
At first I kidded him about it, but as time went on I got interested in the characters and storylines, and pretty soon I was watching it myself even when he didn't come home.
That was the only soap I ever got into. I tried watching a couple others, but they didn't interest me as much or for very long.
So anyway, when I got on Twitter, I was trying to find some celebrities that I remembered watching long ago, and one of them that came up was Eric Braeden, and surprisingly, he had a twitter account, so I started "following" him(to those who don't know, that's like when you "Friend" someone on Facebook - it just means, you receive notices of that persons' Tweets. So no, I am not a stalker. :)

There are some other celebs I am following, like Mr. T, William Shatner, and of course, the Duck Dynasty guys. They have been receiving a lot of attention and support lately, for good reason.
I am trying to remember some TAGS folks who might be on Twitter so I can find them. It's sad that a lot of the people I would have like to have talked to have already passed on.

If you happen to be on, look me up. I as usual am using the same handle.:)

December 24, 2013 - Msg 95893: Well, I'm kinda flabbergasted (did I spell that right)...Sterling, as Clark Griswold said in "Christmas Vacation," "If I woke up tomorrow with my head sewn to the carpet, I wouldn't be more surprised". LOL Who know you liked Y&R? I used to watch it in highschool, during summer break and I liked it. Havent watched it since but I know who Victor Newman is! :) I have never done Twitter, though. If I ever decide to, I will certainly look you up.

Well, its Christmas Eve morning and I have a fire in the fireplace, the lights are all plugged in, the coffee is ready, and I am about to wake mom. She will be ready for coffee soon. Better git!

Merry Christmas!

Boo

December 24, 2013 - Msg 95894: MERRY CHRISTMAS, PORCH!! Not much going on here, will go out to David and Brittney's house this afternoon, with Eloise and Jerry. Brittney's brother is here from Michigan, with his elderly golden retriever (Chloe) and a three-month-old golden puppy. With Bentley, and Brittney's two cats (Lucy and Ricky) and Toye Starr, we're going to have a furry Christmas! I imagine Toye Starr will spend a good deal of time in my lap. She and Bentley are best friends, the cats ignore her, and Chloe pretty much does so as well, but the puppy is going to want to play. She's too young to know how to play gently, and is probably at least four times Toye Starr's size. So, as I said, I'll probably have a lapdog all evening, or worse. She may very well just climb up and sit on my shoulder! She does that when the lap isn't high enough to get her out of reach. She may give a little warning growl, which will probably be ignored by an exuberant puppy, and she will not follow it up with a snap. A growl is as threatening as she gets, so she'll likely spend a lot of time on my shoulder. No problem!

Well, better get rounded up. Still got to get dressed, and wrap two more presents. Have a wonderful Christmas eve, friends. I'm thinking about how beautiful it must be in Heaven tonight, and our dear REV will be in that choir! --Romeena

Please keep all those in prayer who find this time of the year difficult, much pain & sadness in the world you never know what the person next to you is dealing with.

Boo, Give Bernie & Thelma Lou a couple of those Christmas cookies.

Romeena...Wonder if REV has his own pew in Heaven? Maybe he'd sing "The Old Rugged Cross" for G-F it's my favorite! Speaking of that, my buddy gave me a wooden cross that was made from the old church where the song was wrote and 1st performed in 1913.

December 25, 2013 - Msg 95903:
Here in the Toronto area, last weekend's ice storm knocked out power for over 350,000 homes. Our yards and streets are filled with ice covered broken tree trunks and branches. Although my house did not lose power, we did lose internet, cable TV and wireless telephone service for three days. The electric company had to bring in extra people from other locations to assist their over burdened crews who are working 24 hours a day. Still there are about 50,000 without power which may not get fixed until this weekend. My vehicle was completely covered in ice. It took me one hour to warm it up and hammer out enough ice to get one door open. Then it took me another hour to get the sheets of ice off the windows. Retailers are concerned since their last minute Christmas sales have dropped significantly. Although the city has opened up multiple warming centers, some people have moved into the local hotels. What a horrible Christmas it has been so far.

December 25, 2013 - Msg 95904: Well, I had a nice post going, and suddenly my monitor started "scrolling" and then it all went away. I think something's wrong with my computer.

Anyway, I was wishing everyone a Merry Christmas, and I thank each of you for the support and kindness you've shown me over the years. Some of those years were rough, and you were a very important help as I made it through them. There just aren't any better folks anywhere!

MDC, that song is beautiful. I've always had a deep interest in Joseph, the shadow man, never given a lot of attention, but still, an amazing person. He was asked to believe the unbelievable, to accept a pregnant girl as his wife, and to raise her son as his own. I guess it helped that an angel spoke to him, but he could have considered that a dream and disregarded it. This song would have fit beautifully into the Christmas pageants my church used to present (some years it was even televised locally). I'm forwarding it to my email list. Thanks!

Spot, that was a very kind thing for you to do, to cover the Christmas Eve shift for that young dad. I've worked enough holidays to know how difficult it can be. At our hospital, often the Jewish employees would offer to cover for the Christians on Christmas, which I thought was extremely kind of them. I can't really say we returned the favor though, because mostly we had no idea when their high holidays were. They were not vocal about it, but everyone knows when Christmas is, so they just did it. I've seen our Jewish doctors pushing housekeeping carts, and serving food in the cafeteria line! How kind is that!

Well, I'm off to Eloise's house, for our Christmas dinner. She's doing a tenderloin, and then on Saturday, I'll cook a traditional Christmas dinner, with turkey and all the usual stuff. So - we have two Christmas dinners. Not a bad deal!

Blessings, friends, and a very Merry Christmas to you all. And God bless us, every one! --Romeena

December 25, 2013 - Msg 95905: Sorry PH, sounds like the "Ice Man Cometh" maybe I should have gotten ya a big bag of Lake Erie salt...(big salt mines under Lake Erie) for those who did not know that. Hope you thaw out soon!

December 25, 2013 - Msg 95906: Wow! My prayers for all those still without power, Poor Horatio. That's terrible, especially since you stated it might not be on until this weekend??! I remember having ice storms but nowhere near that bad. I hope you and the rest of the people of Toronto can find some joy focusing on the true story of Christmas this year.

I hope everyone has a blessed Christmas.
