All the schools in the area are off for President's Day EXCEPT the schools in our town..(groan). Have to get Erin up and going soon and that wont be easy since she had to stay up late finishing math homework that she didn't do earlier. Hope she learned a lesson about getting her homework done before Sunday night.

St. Susan and I are attending a meeting later this morning at the nursing home where mom is staying. I forget what they call it, but you are probably familiar, MDC. Its a meeting in which they gather the therapists, and others involved in mom's care and discuss the plan of care, answer questions for family, etc. After that I will probably come home and crash on the couch.

Well, hope you all have a good day.

Watch out for those wild little nippers, MDC!

Things are getting back to normal here in the South-lots of folks still without power, though. Hopefully, power will be back on tonight at Laci's house.

DON--that name is mentioned in "Goober Takes a Car Apart" about 1:40 into the show when Andy talks to a Don Yelton on the phone. I'm really not that ept or a superbig fan of Andy Griffith to know that so quickly, but "Google" is a wonderful thing! ha As for "Odd Fellows Club" that search showed many clubs using that name. Maybe it was one of the lodges that Floyd or someone belonged too, or maybe it was an offshoot of the Esquire club? lol Also, yes, our dear REV passed last year. He was a good man, and we miss him dearly.
I hope you can get into the spirit of the Taylor Front Porch, and grab a rocker. We talk about lots of things, including the Beeman's overbite, and Barney's new car, as well as every day things like the weather, which has been strange lately!

February 18, 2014 - Msg 96678: Good afternoon, porch! Speaking of the weather, we're at 80° here in the Dallas area, at 4:15 p.m. We may pull up another degree or two before the sun goes down. I've got daffodil foliage up to three or four inches tall, no buds rising yet. I hope they don't, because it's still February and ANYthing can still happen. We have been known to have snow in March. Weird. A little nipped foliage won't hurt anything, but if those buds get frozen, they likely won't bloom again. I've got a lot of daffodils out there - I plant a dozen or two every spring, and they multiply beautifully, so the beds out front are full of them now. Some even pop up out in the yard. I usually lift them and put them back in a bed, if I see them before Eddie mows them down.

Don Yelton, I believe you asked about the Odd Fellows club earlier? I didn't know much about them, except that it's a genuine organization, the Independent Order of Odd Fellows, or IOOF. I know more now, thanks to Google. I won't go into a description here, because everyone can do the same thing. My infant grandson, who died shortly after birth, is buried in a lovely little cemetery, in a semi-rural area, just north of Ft. Worth. The cemetery is sponsored by the IOOF, but no membership is required to buy ground there.

It's so beautiful today. Pleasantly warm, sunny, with enough high haze to make the sky look gray/blue, but still pretty. The squirrels are out in force. So far, I haven't seen any more of them digging up my tulips. I think the cayenne pepper I sprinkled on the ground might have done the trick. I guess I'll find out in a few weeks.

Well, time to think about something for supper. Wish Aunt Bee would come by and fry some chicken for me. I make good fried chicken, but it's too much trouble and makes too much mess to do it for one person. The fast food chicken places are okay, I guess, but they're not like home made. The only place that makes it as good, and maybe better, than I can is Babe's, but they're about 45 minutes away. Makes me think of our REV, bless him. When he would come through here for a concert, he always wanted to go to Babe's. Eloise and I took him there last October when he was here. It turned out to be just three days before he passed. Still breaks my heart. We all loved him like a brother.

Blessings, porch! --Romeena

MDC

February 18, 2014 - Msg 96682: You're right, Don Yelton. It was a rough time, but the whole family is stronger because of it. My son and his precious wife were shattered, of course, but they stood strong and supported each other. My DIL joined a support group after a couple of months, and it helped. Now, eleven years later, she's still in the group. She no longer needs support, but serves on the board and is active in helping expand the organization. They went from the original group that she joined, to multiple chapters now, and have expanded into a couple of other states. I dearly love that girl. They have two strong, healthy boys, both baseball players and all-around good kids. They have them in church, and my DIL is one of the best boy-moms I've ever seen. I guarantee you, she knows which end of a bat to hold, and would not say "eeww" over a fishing worm. She's a beautiful girl, who is not afraid to sweat and get dirty, and looks great in a ballcap, with her hair in a ponytail. She was exactly what my son needed. He wouldn't have had nearly as happy a life with a princess. They play together like two kids.

Romeena, Your mention of REV kinda made me sad, so I listened to a couple of his CD's to cheer myself up. Sure wished I hada met him, but I know I will someday....
Wonder if they have "worker angels" that come down to pick up Babes Chicken for carry-out?

G-F....

February 19, 2014 - Msg 96691: Good morning, porch. G-F, I wish you and everyone on the porch could have met REV. He was the real deal, a genuine Christian, a good man. He loved his family, talked of them all the time, and conducted himself at all times like a gentleman. His conversation was also filled with references to his Lord. It was just a pleasure to spend time with him. As for the Babe's chicken, I've heard it said (by my Dale) that if God invented anything better than that chicken, He kept it in heaven! So, maybe He did. Hahaha!

It's cloudy, lead-colored skies and looks dreary out there. Temp is 63° however, so that's not bad. We could use the rain, I hope we get a lot.

Well, got to head up to the church, it's Wednesday, gotta teach the ESL class for my little group. They're really a mixed bag. One lady is quite fluent, I think she just comes for the socializing. Another does fairly well, two or three know their numbers and basic stuff, and two, a man and a woman, have no clue. It's a challenge to teach a mixed group like that, but the more fluent ones help a lot. I'm glad they're there. I speak some Spanish, but sometimes I need their help. When a person has no basis in the language at all, it's hard. There has to be a starting point. Teaching them an English word without having the Spanish to tell them what it means can be difficult. Lots of things can be acted out, but not everything. Anyway, it's fun, I think they enjoy it, and I surely do. Blessings, friends! --Romeena

February 19, 2014 - Msg 96696: I just got home from the church, teaching my ESL class. I'm really enjoying that. I got a surprise today. The one man in the class gives the impression of knowing almost no English. Today, the rest of the group wanted to do some reading aloud. To my great surprise, he reads English very well. Some of the crazy phonics in English threw him, but generally he does great. Problem is, he has no idea what he has just read! That became evident when we started to discuss what we had read. On the other hand, one of the women speaks English quite well, but cannot read it worth squat. Both cases are a reflection of how they have been taught. The woman has learned just in usage, in conversation with English speakers. The man has been in a classroom and learned phonetically, but has no clue what the words mean. So, it's a challenge, but it's fun. It's all very informal, we answer to no one, so we can explore wherever they want to go.

Well, I'd better get my groceries put away. Had to stop at the store on the way home. I had no fresh fruit or veggies in the house, and that doesn't work for me. I fixed that problem!

It was a graveside service that lasted an hour and a half and a woman who was standing too long actually fainted and we had to drag her over to a bench in another part of the cemetery, then a little while later another woman came limping along about to fall and I had to help her, too. I cant figure out why they would have a long service at the graveside only and have no chairs. People were dropping like flies! LOL I'm just glad I wasn't one of them. You would think they would figure out (the funeral director) that an older person's funeral might be attended by some older people that wouldn't tolerate standing in one spot for an hour and a half.

Hey, John Masters! Good to see you back!

Well, we never got the bucket loads of snow we were supposed to get, much to Kai's chagrin. Just got maybe an inch or so. It is really windy today, though. Take care those of you who got it worse with blizzards and all.

February 21, 2014 - Msg 96722: Some of yous guys names I don't get. Who is a Sterling Holobyte? Don Yelton

February 21, 2014 - Msg 96723: That's me, Don. ;)

February 21, 2014 - Msg 96724: Some of the names have a special meaning to the person, not necessarily meaningful to the rest of us. Some are very straightforward, like mine - no question about that one. Others have morphed over the years - MDC started out as Mr. Darling's Cuz, but that was too cumbersome to write out all the time, so we shortened. A lot of the names are actually initials, like PH for Poor Horatio, and G-F for Goober Fife. Possum sometimes signs as Possum u.a.r., which of course is Possum Under A Rock. We have had a sort of unwritten understanding about using the names of the primary characters. We don't have a Barney, or an Andy, or Opie or Aunt Bee. Some of the names are very creative, like Auh2o, which, if you understand the symbols from the periodic table, is easy to decipher and tells you something about the politics of the named person. All in all, it's fun, and interesting, and everyone is free to name themselves as they please, so long as the name is clean.

Beautiful day here, 65°, sunny, birds out in droves, squirrels all over my back yard, doves bathing in the fountain by the pond, just a very nice day to sit by this big ol' window and observe. So grateful that I'm not worrying about sleeping today in order to be able to do a 12 hr shift at work tonight. After 35 years of that, I finally got enough. God is good.

Blessings! --Romeena

Don--here's a couple for ya...do you know who Hodie Snitch is? And who said, "the odor of witch hazel draws me."?
Also, from which end of this huge porch does ye spring from? I'm in Arizona.
I'll let Sterling and Boo explain their monikers,
as I even forget how they came about. There are a few others who stop by from time to time.
JM--sounds neat. I see lots of cool CW stuff on the Roadshow. Too bad you cant look them up.
It looks like everyone did OK thru the latest
storms. SPOT, you doing alright?
Dad is doing well these days.
Take care,
MDC

February 21, 2014 - Msg 96726: Hodie Snitch, Hodie Snitch. I heard it before. One of the Morrison sisters for witch hazel. Springfield, Illinois. Don Yelton Is Hodie Snitch the old guy Mr Douglas sees but he's dead. When he picked a apple?

February 21, 2014 - Msg 96727: Or is Hodie Snitch the guy Gomer was talking about when Wally fired him? Don Yelton

February 21, 2014 - Msg 96728:
Two good guesses Don, but Hodie was the guy that Andy told Opie about regarding his fishing spot.
Hodie tried to bully it away when andy was a young'un, and when Opie asked, "What happened?" andy said, "Well, we just fished there, didnt we?" A great little scene.
BOO--Did you have the Care Plan meeting yet regarding your mom? Just curious.
Sweet dreams,
MDC

February 21, 2014 - Msg 96729: Yes, we had the meeting, MDC. I guess it went well. Mom is discouraged because she wants out of there so bad. We have to keep reinforcing the importance of the therapy and getting her to a place that she can come home again. I feel for her but it seems she is getting good care in the facility she is in. I was there this evening when she was ready for bed and she pressed the call light to get her diaper changed and get some pain medicine. Both the nurse's aid and nurse that came in to help were very nice to mom and to us. One think I like a lot about the place is that they allow the family to be very involved. When I am there I help the nurses and aids in mom's care to speed things along. Often one comes in and is alone so I help and they appreciate it.

Well, long day...ready to get to bed with a good book. Love to all,

Boo

PS-Very glad to hear that your dad is doing well these days, MDC.
PSS-Welcome back, John Masters!

February 22, 2014 - Msg 96731: G-F vs. kidney stone....stone winning :(

February 22, 2014 - Msg 96732: Morning Folks,

Hope you're weekend is starting off well!

Thanks, Boo and Sterling! Good to be back!

Don Yelton - It's a small town and you hear things. I probably heard Barney recite so many codes and violations that it probably stuck.

G-F - Hang in there! I have had four rounds with kidney stones. Just bite hard and fight the good fight. If all else fails, get to hospital and let 'em give you an IV. That sure took MY pain away. And....made the emergency room float just a bit. LOL!

Have a good one, y'all.

John Masters

February 22, 2014 - Msg 96733: Morning all. I hope you are all doing fine and dandy.

Sorry you're ailing GF I've never had the dreaded stone malady but I have heard horror stories from those who have. And one thing I hear they share in common is plenty of pain. You have my prayers and sympathy my friend. Hang in there.
Good to see you back John Masters. I thought of you often during football season. Your Chiefs did themselves right proud. To early an exit in the playoffs but at least they got there. Didn't surprise me a bit though. I think Andy Reid is a fine man and coach.

Glad your Mom continues to improve Boo. And glad your Dad is doing ok MDC. Monday was the nine year anniversary of my Dad passing. I miss him but I know he is ok. As Romeena would say, you can't beat a deal like that. :)

Been a busy morning and I ain't done yet. Better shove off before this easy chair takes control of my tired old body.

Wish me luck. I'm gonna try a roast in the dutch oven later today. Might work. Might not.

Asa

February 22, 2014 - Msg 96734: Hello John Masters: Did you ever do work as Barney's double on the set? Don Yelton

February 22, 2014 - Msg 96735: Howdy, porch! Just got home from watching a grandson's baseball game. They won, 7-2. Good game, and he played well. He was responsible for 4 of those 7 points. One triple play, and another run batted in. Good little ball player. Just turned 13, and still has the sweet heart he has always had.

g-F, you have my sympathy. I've never had a kidney stone, but have cared for many patients who did, and I can tell you, those things will make the strongest man break down in tears. The pain must just be awful. I saw one man break the siderail on his bed, when the stone was moving.

Asa, that roast will be good. Another good way, (and safe) is in the crockpot. I think you've done that before, if memory serves. I love the way you just keep trying. You're going to be a gourmet cook yet!

Well, the kids are coming in a little while, guess I'd better get moving. My Christmas tree is still up, and they're going to help me take it down and pack it all away. I know, it should have been down six weeks ago, but I enjoy it, Toye Starr doesn't care, so what's the rush? Now I'm getting tired of it, so it's time to take it down. Good excuse to get everyone together.

Blessings, friends! --Romeena

February 22, 2014 - Msg 96736: Thanks Folks for your concerns....This too shall pass! (I'm hoping for quickly)... Already did the ER on Thursday, could use some more of those meds that John Masters described. Had one about 10 yrs. ago this one is just as stubborn. Better go and drink some more water...Might work.....
Might NOT!....G-Frustrated!

February 22, 2014 - Msg 96737: Wonder if Colonel Harvey's Elixir would help? I'd pay $10.00 a bottle if it did...

February 22, 2014 - Msg 96738: Ro, I understand completely about the Christmas tree....if I had an artificial one and lived alone (my kids would bug me to take it down), I would keep mine up for awhile, too. If you enjoy it, why not?

G-F, very sorry to hear you are dealing with a kidney stone. I'll share my husband's kidney stone story with you, just for laughs. ;) One night when my son was about 4, Bruce woke me up in the night, gripping his right side, breathless and in agony. I just said, get dressed, you have a kidney stone. My 4 year old (Sean) woke up too and while I was getting dressed to take Bruce to the ER in the middle of the night, little Sean came to me and said, "Mama, why is Daddy laying in the floor naked, and cryin' like a dog?". LOL I managed to get Bruce dressed and into the car, and get Sean over to my sister's house (we didn't have Erin yet), and then headed to Corpus (about a 15 minute drive from where we were). Poor Bruce was suffering bad. Unfortunately, he had used my car last and left it on empty, so I had to fuel the car before we could get to town. It was a long 15 minutes to the hospital and then when I got into the parking lot, guess what I had to get over several times to get to the ER entrance? Speed bumps. I never heard poor Bruce make the kind of sounds he was making as I drove over those speed bumps. Luckily they took him in to the ER right away and a big, mean nurse was gruffly trying to get him into a hospital gown as he was throwing up from the pain. Now, I am not normally an uncompassionate person, but I guess as a nurse, maybe I can laugh at things like that more easily than some, but I had to excuse myself and duck behind the curtain to laugh. How terrible is that? Shame on me! Well, all ended well with some morphine and the passing of a very small stone. He has never had another one. Hope you don't either. :)

MDC, although I now live in a country where hockey is practically a national sport, I don't follow hockey. So I did not watch either the Canadian women's or men's games when they played against the USA. However, I did watch the highlights later on. The women's game was much more exciting since they came from behind to tie in regulation time, and then won it in sudden death overtime.

Don Yelton, since my namesake is not a character on the Andy Griffith Show, you would have to watch the Opie's Charity episode. Or just watch the scene in the following video for an explanation. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A4GLGwoRYcU

John Masters, welcome back. Too bad our Rev is not here to also welcome you back.

G-F, ask your doctor about extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy to treat your kidney stones. http://tinyurl.com/5lwgy6

I wonder what causes that? mystery poster

February 22, 2014 - Msg 96742: G-F, prayers for you and your condition. I've never had a kidney stone so I can't relate too much to what you are going through, but I do know pain - the passing out kind - so I can sympathize with you a little.
I was going to comment that I remembered seeing something about doctors using some kind of wave to break up kidney stones, but Poor Horatio beat me to it and besides he gave you a lot more information on it than I would have been able to.

Don't feel too bad about your Christmas tree still being up, Romeena. I just went for a walk today and saw a house that still has ALL their Christmas decor up. At least I THINK it was all of it. I hope. From their Nativity, to Santa on the roof, candy canes, to just about every other Christmas themed decoration you can think of, it was still there.
Ah well, maybe they are just getting an early start on next Christmas. ;)

Don Yelton, the moniker I use here is my internet alter-ego. To make a long story kind-of, sort-of shorter, I was going through a store looking at some computer software when I kept noticing a company name on the boxes called Spectrum Holobyte. I thought, "That would make a cool name for a person, or maybe a super-hero ;)."
Though I thought "Spectrum" was a little too "out there" for a person's name(yeah, like Holobyte isn't), but I still liked the flow of the original name, so I just did a little tweaking, and substituted the more normal-sounding name of "Sterling" in place of "Spectrum".
Anyway, that's how I got my name.
Now, even though we aren't required to pick a TAGS-only related name for this here porch, I figured, if you tried hard enough, you could say that it is related to the guy who played salesman Bert Miller in the episode "The Merchant Of Mayberry" - Sterling Holloway. Of course, I modified his name at the end there, but being that this is an electronic porch and the end of the modified name uses a computer term, that could work, right?. ;)
