December 18, 2014 - Msg 100186: Sterling, That sock factory in Mt. Airy is one of the few industries left in the town. Mt. Airy used to be a big furniture and textile town, but as business's packed up and moved so went the town. I think Spencer's children's wear still have a small plant there, but most industry is gone. They are trying to make the area into a "wine" country destination, so those folks battle the "Mayberry" folks for the tourist trade revenue....Just in case you were wondering...G-F

December 18, 2014 - Msg 100188: I got it, ASA, I got it. Thanks for missing me. :) I think about all of you all through the days but sometimes just don't take the time to sit down at the keyboard. Things are so busy this time of year. I was sick with a cold and feeling lousy, having some vertigo and nausea, but thank God, that is over and I am feeling fit as a fiddle and loving it! I am still taking good care of myself and eating right, losing weight but slowly. At my age, it just doesn't come off as quickly as it used to. I am still waiting for some lab results to come in but as well as I feel, I cant imagine anything being really wrong, Lord willing.

We have been doing chores today to prepare for our party tomorrow night. We are hosting Bruce's sunday school class party and looking forward to it. We always have a great time getting together with our church family here at the house. I am done with most of the prep, except throwing some sandwiches together and such. I am going to make a big pot of the broccoli cheese soup that I like to make in the slow cooker. I will tell you how if you are interested Emeril...ahem, I mean Asa. ;)

Things are going pretty well but we are missing mom this year and things continue to be very challenging with St Susan's son, Matt. He has been in so much pain. He is one of those men who loves with his whole heart and just because his wife is unfaithful, doesn't me all his love just goes away. It is breaking our hearts to see what he is going through, and the kids of course. I just broke down and had a good cry about it today. I had a little talk with the Lord and it helped. It is so hard to see your loved ones going through something like this. Please remember to send up a pryer for Matt.

Well Erin got an early present. She wanted a guinea pig and we got her a very sweet girl named Oreo. She started bleeding from the back end though and had to take her to the vet already. She had some kind of infection but we are giving her antibiotics and she is doing great.

Well, I think I had better read back over the earlier posts and see what I have missed...be back later.

December 18, 2014 - Msg 100189: Hmmm, I know I'd rather go to Mt. Airy for the Mayberry aspect of the town, rather than the wine, G-F, but that is just me.

Glad you are feeling better, Boo! Praying for a good doctor's report for you, and for Matt.

Just finished watching Linus from A Charlie Brown Christmas on an episode of That Girl. I haven't checked it out on the internet to see if it was the same boy, but it was pretty evident from his voice. He even kind of looked like Linus. I never watched That Girl before, so I am glad that MeTV is having their "Christmas Conundrum" these weeks leading up to Christmas, where they show Christmas episodes of classic shows. They already did TAGS. I missed that one, but I can always watch that on the internet, and probably will before too long.
Oh, if you're interested in seeing the boy who played Linus, the episode of That Girl that he is on is called "Christmas and the hard-luck kid". I'd imagine it's on the internet somewhere. Most everything is.

Sterling--I saw a Bob Newhart Christmas episode the other night on ME-TV. Very funny. And if Bob's ties were any WIDER, he's probaby fly away!! lol
Good to hear that there are still some US textiles. My aunt used to work in a Munsingwear
factory near Minneapolis, and we'd get lots of new PJs, undies, etc (seconds, but so what)every Christmas. Like you say (and Andy) we musta had sandpaper underwear the way we went thru pants, etc. ha In fact, our undies would be thread bare just as the box arrived! Funny how we remember those things.
Hang in there all!!

I think the "Mayberry" folk will win out on that battle...Just Say'in that is why I support Mayberry Days...

MDC, I thought I shared one about when my brother came home on leave from Vietnam at Christmas. My Mom was Soo angry, because he was NOT due home for Christmas, but as a "signing bonus" for re-upping for another tour of duty. When he came in the door she said: "OH NO YOU DIDN'T!!" That Christmas I got pushed into a fence and laid open my chin and my Brother had to rush me to the ER on his last night of leave. He said as he was speeding there, If I get pulled over pretend your knocked out!.. Yep, that Christmas was one for the books.

December 19, 2014 - Msg 100194: Oh yeah, Sterling. That kid just has to be the voice of Linus. And you're right, he does look like him!

We're still in the 40s around here, wet and drizzly. Wet enough that it finally shorted something, and the GFI keeps tripping. That stops my pond pumps, which is okay for a short time, but eventually, I have to get aeration going again. Annoying.

How are gasoline prices around the porch? We're paying about 2.15 at the major stations, like Exxon, and you might find it for 2.09 or so at the convenience store pumps. Sure is a pleasant relief from the ridiculous prices we were paying a while back.

Well, better get moving. Eloise wants to go to Hobby Lobby, and we're getting pedicures at 1:00. No, that's not an indulgence for me. I can't get my arthritic joints and stiff back bent around to where I can get to my toes! I would never have imagined that I would get to where I couldn't do that, but there it is. So, I just do what I have to do, and enjoy it.

Our SS department Christmas party is tonight at the church. Should be fun. You know what - if it wasn't for family and my church friends, I'd have no social life at all. God is good.

Boo, I'm so sorry for Matt. I know the kind of man he must be - I was married to one. From day one, the commitment between me and Dale was absolute, and if I had ever betrayed him, I can't imagine how hurt he would have been. Well, I guess I can imagine it, because it would have worked both ways. I would have been devastated! Prayers for Matt, certainly.

Blessings, friends! --Romeena

December 20, 2014 - Msg 100206: Hey Y'all! Thanks for emailing Floyd about the "Bold" birthday gift, PH!

I've got some news, and it is BIG! BIG, I say!

I met Thelma Lou yesterday! And I don't mean Boo's donkey, either! LOL Yep,I sure did- Miss Betty Lynn herself. Took a drive up to Mount Airy and she was at the Andy Griffith Museum. She told me I was "Cute" and posed for pics,I got to put my arm around her,she signed an autographed photo for me and gave me the answer to one of the most puzzling questions of Mayberry.. This is how it went:

Me: Maybe you can answer a question for me.. What was Thelma Lou's last name?

Betty Lynn: I didn't have one!

Me: That's what I thought!

Betty Lynn: Andy introduced me to some people once and was like.. "What's your last name?" I told him I didn't have one,and that's the way it stayed. I'm like Cher with only one name!

And.. She asked where I lived and I told her I lived in an old home which used to be a hotel. She told me she'd love to see it sometime,so I showed her some pics I had on my camera of my front porch all done up for Christmas. How many people can say that Thelma Lou has seen their Christmas decorations? And thought they were pretty? Wow!

Then,as I was saying goodbye in order to give other folks a turn to meet her,she called my name, and I looked back as she blew me a kiss. I blew one right back!

I'm told y'all it was BIG!

I don't feel like no ordinary possum no more (oh,I mentioned Allan & the Porch to her-told her I was "possum under a rock". She had a basic idea of what we do here) after being "Specialized" on by Thelma Lou- maybe y'all should start calling me "Princess Possum" or something- ha ha

If I can get my ornery camera to work with my computer,I'll have pics on Facebook soon.

Oh, and G-F,I said "Hey!" to the Mayberry on Main folks for you! They are some nice people.

Y'all take care!

December 20, 2014 - Msg 100207: Good morning, porch! Cold, gray and damp here. I wish it would just go on and rain and get it over with. I've been fighting a battle with my outdoor lights the past two nights. As soon as the timers turn them on, the GFI trips, and everything goes off. Well, not everything, because they're not all on the same circuit, but my roof lights and all the stuff in the back yard is on one circuit, including the pond pumps. So, when the lights go out, there is no aeration on the pond. It can go a day or two without it, being about a thousand gallons, but sooner or later, it needs it.

Well, this morning, I finally figured it out. Everything was off last night, and this morning I reset the GFI once more. The group of lights around the arbor came on briefly because they're on a "timed" timer. The others are on photo sensors. They went off after about three seconds, so that pretty much told me that line is the problem. I went back there and found that the timer had dropped from where I had it secured, and was dangling with the receptacle end facing upward. I unplugged the lights, turned the timer over, and water poured from the receptacles. Yep, I reckon that would trip a GFI. I let it drain completely, reset the timer, plugged the lights back in, came in and reset the GFI, and it hasn't tripped yet. Been over half an hour now. Problem solved, apparently, and lesson learned.

I'm staying HOME today! I've been gone much of the day every day this week. I declare, I don't know how I ever had time to work! Today, I'm going to wrap all the gifts, do a little cleaning, and spend some cuddle time with Toye Starr, watching sugary movies. I love those Hallmark movies! Then Monday and Tuesday will be cookie-baking days. Gotta have those cookies! I'll take a handful of cookies over cake or pie any day, provided they're good cookies, and I've got some great recipes. I make a Scottish shortbread that just melts in your mouth. If a crumb falls on your shirt, it leaves a buttery footprint! Then there's one that's similar to a shortbread, but softer, and has a lot of very finely chopped pecans in it. Yum! I may try for some peanut brittle, too. My mom made great peanut brittle, wish I had her recipe. Well, I'm off to rustle up something to eat. Blessings, friends! --Romeena

I made a ham and a casserole and took out to the drug rehab to help with a Christmas party for the girls out there this evening, and then I took a little drive and looked at some Christmas lights. Getting pretty sleepy now.

It has chased all the clouds away so the blue sky is showing, it's making beautiful shadows on the lawn, and it's making the day much warmer. What can it be? There's a rumor going around that it's the "sun" - wonder if it's true? Hard to tell, we haven't been blessed by its presence in so long. Well, whatever it is, I hope it stays around for a while.

The critter traffic out back is in high gear! They're loving the new warmth, the dry grass, the soft breeze that's playing around out there. Hard to tell its direction, but it sure beats the cold northerly blast we've had the past few days. The temp is 57° at 9:30 a.m., and expected to make around 65° today. I love it! I've got irises blooming! Granted, they're the remontants, those who typically rebloom in the fall, but that usually happens in September and October, not December! One big old gorgeous sunshine-yellow mophead is just soaking up the warmth, and there's another three-foot tall bud stalk by the pond, I think it's a purple. Can't wait for it to open!

Well, today is cookie-baking day. I've got four pounds of butter, five pounds each of flour and sugar, many pounds of pecans, some dried currants, cranberries and apricots, and a lot of determination. I hope nobody calls and tempts me to run away and play. Of course, what I SHOULD be doing is changing linens, cleaning bathrooms, vacuuming floors and plowing a path through the stored Christmas stuff in the "Christmas room", so my granddaughter can at least find the bed in there. Yep, that's what I should do, but hey - cookies are important too, right? Right! So, cookie-making it is! Yay. I love cookies!

Blessings, everyone - prayers for the ones who are ailing. No fun to be sick during the holidays. --Romeena

December 22, 2014 - Msg 100241: Thanks for the prayers for Noah. He is doing much better today, though I can tell he is still a little out of sorts. Not exactly the same goofy kid I know and love. Close, but not quite. Weird how his fever came on just all of a sudden like that. I think that sort of thing is normal with kids. But still don't like it.

December 22, 2014 - Msg 100244: Better watch it GF. Tom has his eye upon you. And he just may confiscate your Wheeler. Then you'd be sorry. Nice link to the song GF.

Glad to read Noah is improved Sterling. So much junk going around right now. And I am hearing the flu bug has mutated and the vaccines we got in the Fall are not so effective. At least that's what Viola Slatt told Laura Lee Hobbs who passed it on to Sarah, who mentioned it to Miss Edwards who told Emma Watson all about it.

Just got back from delivering some goodies to neighbors and it's trying to snow out there. Cold, windy, and trying to snow. How rude!

Possum, you want me to bring my bongos to the party? I learned some new songs on them. Even taught myself how to play a-capella real good.

Well I think I'm gonna crawl between the sheets, plug in a Perry Mason dvd, and relax for a spell. I just love how Lt. Tragg and Hamilton Burger always think they have Mason good this time, and Perry always gets the last laugh.

Prayers for all.

December 22, 2014 - Msg 100246: Good evening, porch! Yep, G-F, I've got a lot of butter and flour and stuff piled up in there, but it's gradually turning into goodies. I've got a big pan of Scottish shortbread in the oven right now. Mercy, I love that stuff! Probably nothing worse for a diabetic, unless it would be a doughnut, but shortbread is definitely my weakness. 'Course I'm pretty partial to the ones I mentioned earlier, that have all the pecans in them. Those pecans are chopped so fine they're almost ground up, and even people who don't like nuts in baked things like these. It's usually the texture of the pecans, not the flavor, that people object to, and with them chopped so fine, they don't encounter that "nutty" texture. I can remember "helping" my mother bake those cookies when I was just a little sprout. I'm sure I was a lot of help.

Got the sunroom cleaned up today, too. I hadn't really cleaned it since Ted replaced that back door and stopped the dirt from blowing in when Eddie would blow the leaves off the patio. Sure looks better out there now. Also, that Desert Rose plant that I failed to bring in before the little freeze we had was shedding dead leaves all over the floor. Every day I was picking up dead leaves. Finally, common sense pierced the fog in my brain, and I sat the thing outside, stripped all the leaves off in the yard, and brought it back in. Dawn comes late in some countries.

Well, I've been on my feet about as long as I can tolerate it for today, I guess. As soon as the shortbread comes out of the oven, I think I'll turn in. Tomorrow is another day. Blessings, friends. --Romeena

December 23, 2014 - Msg 100249: So is that the scuttlebutt, Asa?! ;-)

Thanks MDC.

Well, I am hoping for a white Christmas. I already had one green Christmas when we spent it over in Hawaii that one year. Didn't have the same "feel". It was weird seeing Christmas lights on the tropical trees and Hawaiian homes with lizards running around on them.
We are supposed to get "some" snow, but also a bunch of slushy mix. Yuck, just like spring.

I have another yuck that I noticed on an TAGS episode on MeTV tonight. It was the one where Helen tries to make Andy jealous, so she can yell at him later, by spending a lot of time with a handsome teacher, even inviting him over to Andy's for dinner. Well, the description doesn't say that SHE TRIES to make him jealous, but that's exactly what it looks like she does.

Ah, but I digress. That isn't the "yuck" part even, though that part is maddening. The yuck part is when Andy is helping Aunt Bee dry the dishes she is washing. Aunt Bee is cleaning off the dishes in the dishwater, then puts them in a holder in the next sink, where Andy takes it and dries it off.
I almost didn't notice it, but then realized that there wasn't any rinse water in the sink Andy was standing over, which means she was scrubbing the dishes in that dirty water and then Andy was just drying them without rinsing. So not only do you have soapy water on them, but you may also have some remnant of casserole on them, just wiped off.
I don't know about you, but when I used to do dishes(sans dishwasher) that dishwater could have some stuff floating around in there after you do enough dishes. Or maybe it's just me.

Goodnight all!

December 23, 2014 - Msg 100250: Folks, I hate to bring a sad note into our Christmassy discussions, but I saw something on Facebook tonight that I think I should share. Our Daphne hasn't been on the porch in quite some time, but most of you will remember her. She had another baby a few months back, not sure of the exact date. Well, according to her Facebook post, the baby passed away yesterday, the 21st. His name was Briar Luke. She posted a few pictures of him - he was chubby and healthy, and just adorable. Apparently he somehow suffocated in his sleep. She didn't call it SIDS, but that's what it sounds like. Naturally, they're distraught, but leaning on the Lord. The services will be on the 26th, in Denton, TX.

I've tried to return to the posting, and get his exact age and some other little details, but would you believe, I can't find it again. I'm very inept at navigating Facebook, which is why I seldom go there. I just happened to log on tonight, looking for something from one of my kids. I found Daphne's post quite by accident, and now can't find it again.

Anyway, please - everyone please pray for that family. They have other children, and those kids are going to miss their little brother badly. My heart just breaks for the whole family. --Romeena

December 23, 2014 - Msg 100251: That is so,so sad, Ro. Prayers for Daphne and her family. Thanks for letting us know. How awful..
