May 21, 2017 - Msg 107542: Well gang been here at work since 4 yesterday..storms moved through..its amazing what a little wind and rain can do...got 5 crews in working...all lights not on ...SPOT

May 21, 2017 - Msg 107543: And you still took time to sweep the porch! Or did the wind blow the dust away? You're a good doggie, SPOT. You and your co-workers are the unsung heroes, in my opinion. I'll never forget how I felt a few years ago, after three days with the power out, when an army of men in hard hats came down my street, checking back yards for downed wires, and repairing anything they found. They were a welcome sight, for sure!

I'm still on the puny list. I can't stray far from this O2 concentrator, so am pretty much stuck here in the house. There's some improvement, though. I was dropping down into the low 70s on the oximeter when I was off the O2. I tested it last night, and I just went to the upper 70s, so maybe I'm getting better.

Well, I'm on my way to my big ol' chair, to just sit there like a lump and do very little all day. I hate this! Got to get back up and going. Had to stay away from preachin' this morning. I'm afraid to drive right now, and my coughing would have disturbed everyone else, so just stayed home. Blessings, friends! --Romeena

May 21, 2017 - Msg 107544: Yep, Romeena a good day to just stay home and look out your window and enjoy what nature has provided you with!

Well Gang I made a executive decision to stay home and not to go to the Midwest Event in the Indianapolis area. They have been calling for severe storms and rain all weekend, and the drive is 5-6 hrs. away so I opted to stay home. But I have to admit my aching hip had ALOT to do with it too...

Really hated to miss it and spending time with Mayberry friends, but as O'l Gome said..."That's Life"... thru & thru!

Have a Great Day......G-F

May 21, 2017 - Msg 107545: Sorry you missed the event GF. Kinda stinks when our aches and pains order us around, ain't it? But as Rumpole of the Baily used to say about his wife, "She who must be obeyed", we best listen and obey the body. I hope you get feeling better.

And the same for you Romeena. I hope your lungs get cleared out. I know you are familiar with James Herriot's books. It sounds like you have what Jeff Mallock refers to as "stagnation t' lungs. Take care of yourself.

Just back from preachin, time to throw a steak on the grill and chow down.

In some tags eps Barney mentions "picalilly" as a good
condiment. What is it? Is it a 'southern' thing?
Well, tomorrow and Tuesday i go the urologist and the
vascular surgeon. Please keep up the prayers so we can
get this swelling down. Thanks,
MDC

May 22, 2017 - Msg 107547: Here ya go MDC the answer to your question, http://www.anediblemosaic.com/picadilly-relish/
As for us around here, I never had it....G-F

May 22, 2017 - Msg 107548: Good morning, porch. Picalilli? Hadn't thought of that in years, but always loved it. My aunt used to make it, and it was so good! The closest defining word would be "relish", I think. The "pico de gallo" of Mexican cuisine is a form of picalilli. "Salsa" would be another. What I found interesting in this little discussion is the interchangeable use of "picalilli" and "picadilly." No one even seems to acknowledge the difference. In the link, one comment even contained both spellings. Just a guess - I'd say it's of British origin, or perhaps Scottish - and is the result of thrifty housewives making sure that nothing is wasted. Every little scrap of veggies is minced up and used in this relish. Just about anything would work in it. I remember my aunt wasn't particular about what went into hers, and somehow, it always tasted about the same. The seasonings rule in that respect, I think.

Still feeling a bit poorly. I do fine when I have my O2, but get shaky and kitten-weak when I have to take it off, like to go out and get the newspaper. My neighbor across the street throws the paper up to my garage door when he walks his dog, but some mornings he doesn't, and it's a long walk out to the sidewalk. I make it, though. This pneumonia is a tough one. My DIL is down with it too, and she's young and very fit, but it's kicking her hard as well. The docs don't seem to feel that hospitalization is necessary, and that suits me fine, but I'll really be happy when I can get on the other side of this thing. It's wearing me out.

Well, guess I'll go feed my little companion, rustle up something for myself, and settle into my chair. It's going to be a long, slow day. Blessings! --Romeena

ROMENNA, thank you for the picalilli explanation. GF--I think you were
'close' with 'picadilly.' I like pico de gallo, especially the kind
they serve at El Pollo Loco. Good stuff. It literally means "beak of the rooster!" haha
Tho I don't want to flaunt my spanish knowledge! :)
Well, I sorta feel like a red crested, web-footed lake loon with all the doc visits lately, but the vascular surgeon today said he is almost positive I have venous insufficency, meaning the big veins aren't doing their job of getting the blood back up to the heart, so for now it is back to the compression socks, and another ultrasound on Friday. I see the urologist tomorrow. Oh the joys of getting older...
Love ya,

Spot- You did a fine job sweeping for us! Thanks for keeping the lights on!

Romeena- I'm praying that you feel better quickly. Pneumonia is no joke. I'm sorry you're not feeling good.

G-F- What a bummer you were not able to go but I know that parts of Indiana were hit hard with flooding so you made the right decision.

Asa- I love the show based on James Herriot's books! Steaks sound so good.

MDC- My husband loves picadilly relish, or any relish for that matter.

Tom- Hey Tom!

Well, my phone is ringing and I need to create today's social media/blog posts for work. I'll talk to y'all later! I hope everyone has a very blessed day today.

May 23, 2017 - Msg 107553: What a disgusting way to wake up and start a day. The Manchester terrorist attack is a cowardly, scurrilous, evil act and demands a response from the world. How much longer are we going to allow the miserable Islamic pigs to run wild across the world? Islam is a religion of peace? NO, it is not! Get a Koran and read it. Learn the truth. Read the Hadiths of Mohammed, which you can find on the internet. Read that, too. They are the fevered ramblings of an evil, sick old man, dictated to Aisha, whom he married when she was five, consummated the marriage when she was nine. Are all Muslims evil? No. There are many, raised in the faith, who still want desperately to believe the propaganda, that it's really a religion of peace. I'm sure that even some of their imams believe that. However, the Bible tells us, even common sense tells us - "ye shall know them by their fruit." What "fruit" has Islam produced? Terror, pain, death, destruction, suffering. Whom have they helped? No one. I say, if Islam wants respect in today's world, they'd better stand up and earn it. --Romeena

I have been dropping in to see what's going on and I am sorry some of you are going thru so much.
MDC & Romeena - Prayers and the best of good wishes to you both!

G-F - I'm also sorry you missed the Mayberry "doings." I wish I could go to something like that, but not really anything like that in Missouri. Except seeing Dean Webb and his band.

I still think TOM is going down to that Miami beach to take in one of those rabbit girl clubs!

Lucy - I dont think we've been formally introduced. This is John Masters. I have a personal blog myself (although I havent been on it for awhile). You'll have to stop in and see it.

Asa - My mower is hummin' along. No complaints yet!

Looks like we are moving from our little oasis. Wife and I have had a sit down and we just cant handle the 12 acres. We actually moved here in a rush because of my dad's health. It's a long story, but we moved here because we HAD to. We wanted to keep it, but it's just too much. That's been part of the reason I have been out of touch. Just so much happening and it kinda gets you in the doldrums.

Hey to possum, Boo, SPOT and the rest of you taking sides in the Foley / Lawson feud. Good to see you all again!

May 23, 2017 - Msg 107558: Good evening, porch, and howdy-do to you and you, Lucy and John Masters. Good to see you. John, I'm sorry to hear that you're going to be leaving your little slice of countryside. However, I do understand. My parents only had six acres to manage, and yet, when my aunt and uncle moved back into town, and I got married, they gave it up and moved back to town as well. For those who haven't experienced it - country land doesn't just manage itself. Unless it's just open rangeland, there's a certain amount of maintenance that must be done, and it can get burdensome and expensive. When there's no longer a reason for it (like a teenage daughter with a horse to graze on the land) you begin to wonder why you're still there. I know when I married and moved away, it spoiled the fun for my parents, and they only stayed a couple of years. Life is full of changes.

I'm slowly fighting my way out of this pneumonia. I'm clearing unbelievable crud out of my chest, my O2 sat now just drops into the mid-80s when I'm away from my O2 (compared to the low 70s a few days ago) and I'm coughing a bit less. I'll "whup" this thing yet!

I've still got most of the white meat of that rotisserie chicken my son brought me on Saturday night. I think I'll go run it through the food processor and make some chicken salad. I've got pecans, onion, fresh peppermint, sweet relish, dried cranberries and mayo to mix into it. Also have some good grain/nut bread for a sandwich, or just some Ritz crackers to eat it on. Guess I'll do okay tonight. I still don't have much appetite. That's a good thing, I've lost at least fifteen pounds since this started. I'm hoping for at least ten more!

Everybody have a great evening, some good rest and peaceful sleep, and wake up in a bright new day. God loves you! --Romeena

MDC, Not at all prayed out for you friend. It is an honor to offer prayers in your behalf. And so they continue.

If I am not mistaking today is our Tom's Birthday. Happy Birthday Tom. I hope and pray it is a good one buddy.

I hope you are still on the mend list Romeena. My Daughter has been quite sick with a nasty cough for almost two weeks now. Her Doctor has her on antibiotics and an inhaler. Poor thing has these coughing spasms that really drain her. I know several people at work who have been quite sick with the same stuff it seems, so something is going around.

GF, I hope your hip has calmed down. Not much fun atall to be in constant pain.

I hope Boo is doing ok. Ain't heard from her for a spell.

Speaking of spells, I am about to have one. I was turning some water on to some evap. coolers on one of our buildings and found a copper line with a bunch of leaks. I know it was drained and blown out last fall, so someone at sometime turned some water on during the winter and filled the line with water. It froze and split the pipe in many areas. Looks like I will be replacing several hundred feet of copper pipe now. Oh well, at least it is on top of the roof so easy access to it. I just hate soldering on the roof right over the roof membrane. If any solder drips off it will burn a hole right through the membrane. So I have to use a heat blanket under each joint when I solder, because it is pretty hard to not have some run off. Oh woe is me. lol

John, sorry you are going to have to move. Sounds like you have a full plate for sure. Prayers for you that all works out well.

Well better get. I have some training to go to in the big city today. That will take up most of the day. I can start on the plumbing tomorrow. Then a 4 day weekend is on tap. :)

My baby boy graduated yesterday. It was a disorganized sight. My parents are more of The Deveraux's in The Gay Deceiver episode so the hollering and such was a bit much for them. It was just a joke. We are just so thankful that Bryson graduated as we were not sure until 2 weeks ago he was going to pass Algebra 2.

Romeena- Sounds like you're finally starting to feel better. I love chicken salad. I've not thought of putting mint in there! Basil is my favorite herb for chicken salad but I'll give mint a try sometime.

John Masters- Technology can be a blessing and a curse in many ways.

MDC- Sounds like it may not be too bad. But what is causing the swelling?

Asa- Did you enjoy yourself in the city?

Tom- I hope you had a great birthday!

Hey to Possum, Spot, Boo, GF, and all!

May 26, 2017 - Msg 107570: Good morning, porch! What a beautiful day!! The sun is out, the sky is bright blue, critter traffic is high, flowers are blooming everywhere and there are buds on my hibiscus bushes. Soon there will be big 10" flowers on them. The Aamerican beautyberry bushes are wearing thick bracelets of blossoms, so soon there will be berries. They come on white, turn pink, and then turn a deep rich purple and are just beautiful. There's a busy little breeze blowing, so the trees and shrubs are swaying, the gladiola foliage is dancing, and there;s a lot of motion out there. So pretty.

I'm feeling better. Not good yet, but better. The coughing spasms are down to every twenty minutes or so, compared to almost constantly, my appetite has picked up a little, O2 sats don't go below 86 when I'm off my oxygen, and I walked out and picked up the newspaper without stopping to rest. Trust me, that's a big improvement. Doesn't sound like much, but it is.

Tom, I hope you had a happy birthday. Sorry I missed it.

Well, maybe I'll actually cook those steel-cut oats I've been talking about. I think I have the energy to do that today. I'll cook about three servings, so I can have them over the weekend. David is talking about taking me to dinner at some point. Sounds nice, if I can scare up the energy to get dressed and all. Have a good day, friends. --Romeena

MDC, I use Tajin all the time. It's wonderful on scrambled eggs, deviled eggs, just about any kind of eggs. I also add it to chicken salad, tuna salad, and just about anything you'd spread on a Ritz cracker. It has a bright, lively flavor without much heat. Now I like my peppers - I can eat a jalapeņo like a pickle - but sometimes the peppery flavor without the heat is nice too, and that's what Tajin provides. Now tell me, how do folks in your neck of the woods pronounce it?

I can't remember when I've had an illness pull me down like this stuff has. I'm still coughing, still rattle when I breathe, and don't have the strength to carry my purse! It's been two and a half weeks now, and I'm about to get tired of this! My chest and ribs are sore, my head hurts when I cough, I have very little appetite, have lost nearly twenty pounds, and have no energy or initiative at all. I'm about sick of my chair and TV, too. I want to get outside in the fresh air, dig in the dirt and plant something, but I wouldn't last three minutes out there! Oh well. I'll just keep taking my antibiotic, breathing my O2, and wait it out. It's got to get better soon, and it is - a little better, anyway. --Romeena

May 27, 2017 - Msg 107584: Glad you are improving, Ro. I have been very concerned.

Continued prayers for you also, MDC.

I'm right here, Asa. Just been real busy and working this weekend. Speaking of copper lines, I am trying to trouble shoot a cooler I made for the nurse's office at work. I coiled some copper tubing and attached it to the front of a fan, attached two lengths of plastic tubing to it..one attached to a small fountain pump and the other as a drain. I put the pump into an ice chest with ice and water and it pumps the cold water through the coil and drains back into the ice chest. It works really well to cool things down but the condensation is crazy. Water drips off the coils constantly so I thought of rigging up a rack over a shallow pan and putting the fan on it to catch the condensation, but the plastic tubes drip water, too. I am wondering if I get some sort of insulation and put on the plastic tubing, if it would help with the condensation. We stayed much cooler at work tonight but we were frequently mopping up water from the floor. we only had one towel and I put it in front of the fan to catch the water dripping from the coils. Any suggestions or ideas welcome.

Congratulations to your boy,Lucy! Hard to believe he is already graduating.

Better get outta here. I'm pretty tired tonight. I had the boy's tonight at work and they were really rowdy.

Boo,regarding your homemade air conditioner, I have two suggestions:
1) Try adding salt to the ice water. This will lower the melting temperature of the ice thereby causing it to melt slower which will increase the cooling effect.
2) If you can't position your fan, coils and tubing over the ice chest to collect the condensation, then try making chutes (v or u shaped) to funnel the dripping water to the ice chest.

I had a good day. My kids, David and Brittney and the boys, came to Irving today, descended on my house, changed the linens on my bed and washed them, cleaned up my kitchen, ran the dishwasher, vacuumed all the carpets, generally tidied up, and left me with a bowl of leftovers from their dinner last night - a big bowl of mashed potatoes and a huge chunk of Brittney's delicious pot roast (the girl can cook!) and some gravy. Then they went over to Eloise;s for steaks on the grill but I stayed here - just don't quite feel up to getting out yet. Had me some pot roast, gravy and taters, and I'm doin' mighty fine! Good meal and a clean house - can't ask for more than that.

Well, guess I'll go watch a little TV, then head for the (clean) bed. Sounds like a plan! --Romeena

We are kind of tired around here due to the storms last night. It stormed from 1am to 5am last night and there was no sleeping. I don't recall a bad storm ever lasting that long unless it was a hurricane. :) No damage done, though, and our place never floods due to all the sand around here.

Well, I had a good memorial day since I got to spend it here at home. I made pulled pork in the slow cooker for sandwiches, some good coleslaw and pasta salad and we had ice cream cones for dessert. Mostly I took it easy, though. Sean and I watched several episodes of the BBC's Call the Midwife series on Netflix tonight. I always enjoy that show. Sean laughs and tells me I could have written it.

Well, off to bed. I hope you all have a good night.

May 30, 2017 - Msg 107596: Hmmm....I'll take care of Msg 107595 as soon as I can. --Floyd

May 30, 2017 - Msg 107597: Hmmm. Don't know what that was, and don't care. I'm just grateful I have more to do than just sit around trying to find a way to annoy other people. Kinda pitiful, really. Anyway, thanks, Floyd.

Well, friends, I have some sad news to report. You have prayed for my neighbor, Angie, who has the brain tumor, and for her sisters, Diane and Jeanette, who have been caring for her. You remember that about three weeks ago, while I was in Kentucky, Diane suffered a massive stroke, found to be related to a widespread cancer that no one even knew she had. Well, without ever regaining any function or even much awareness, Diane passed away yesterday morning. That leaves Jeanette, who lives in El Paso, to care for Angie. She has just left her family there and moved here. Angie has two daughters. One is a brand-new pediatrician, trying to start her medical practice in Tyler, married and expecting a baby momentarily. The other is a single girl trying to launch a new career. It's so sad that these young women are suddenly having so much responsibility thrust upon them at such a vulnerable and crucial time in their lives. Please pray for them all.

Well, guess I'd better go feed my little roommate. She really hates it when I stop off at the computer before I go to the kitchen. Later, taters. --Romeena

May 30, 2017 - Msg 107599: In the world of copper "T"s Asa is a Specialist!....Yep, the word worked Floyd...👍

May 30, 2017 - Msg 107600: THANKS Floyd, you're a "treasura" for keeping us going so well.
ROMEENA, I am so sorry to hear of your friend's passing. I just had a 90 year old acquaintance from church suffer a massive stroke last. She lived just 4 days after it, never regaining consciousness. God really knows what he is doing when he lets such folks come home to Him, IMHO.
May your friend rest in peace, and may her family get everything worked out. God bless.
CT scan of my abdominal area tomorrow. Oh the joys of aging! ha

May 31, 2017 - Msg 107604: Good morning, porch. Beautiful day here, bright sunshine and clear blue skies, breeze so gentle that only a few leaves are stirring, robins are running all over my yard, squirrels are chasing each other around the trees, and all seems to be well. I look out at the beauty and peace, and think of the grief and chaos that reigns next door, and I just have to ask - Why me, Lord? I'm grateful, but I don't understand it.

Big Maude, your lunches take me back to my childhood. My mother would have a lunch very much like what you make for us when I came home from school. We only went half days when I was in first grade. She made the sandwiches a little different, though. They were open-face, with a slice of white bread, a layer of good old-fashioned rat-trap cheddar cheese, sliced tomato, thin slices of onion, and a couple of slices of bacon. She would stick them under the broiler until the cheese melted and bubbled and got little brown spots, then they were ready. Tomato soup and a glass of cold buttermilk, and I was all set! Mercy! I can almost taste it. Oh, and do you put nuts in the brownies? I hope so!

I'm finally on the mend. Feeling much better today. Still not 100%, but much improved. This thing has really knocked me flat, but I'm getting up. The memorial service for Diane will be on Saturday, and I should be able to go.

Well, guess I'll get moving. There's not a lot to do around here after my kids blew through on Monday and left the house so nice and clean and tidy. Again, why am I so blessed? --Romeena

May 31, 2017 - Msg 107605: Big Maude, it's great to hear that you'll be coming to the Meet-up! We have lots of fun and it's a nice relaxing weekend visiting with Mayberry folks. If you're on Facebook (and I think even if you're not), you can see information about the meetup on the "event" page. https://www.facebook.com/events/415772735456934/

I hope we have lots of folks come and visit with us in Mayberry.

May 31, 2017 - Msg 107606: HI ALL, well, the CT scan of my kidney area went well today. I also got injected with the "contrast" stuff for the doctor to get an even better look.
Whole procedure was only about 25 minutes. Friday is a more detailed ultrasound of my veins in my legs. I hope I can then finally start with the closing off of my bad veins.
BIG Maude, glad you made it thru the storms OK.
I posted earlier that i was praying for you and yours. You can send any of that rain out my way!
Just dont send it to TOM, or he'll throw you
in the clink! ha
On the ME-TV channel, they started the 'Summer of Me' on Monday, and now at 4 PM I get the Beverly Hillbillies and LITBeaver, and I noticed that the license plate on the Dodge that the Cleavers drive is exactly the same as the one on the Dodge that Miss Hathoway drives! Car sharing I guess! haha.
POSSUM, can you believe that its been 50 years
since the Summer of Love! ha Groovy! :)

June 01, 2017 - Msg 107607: Good Morning Friends!

This week has gotten away from me! I have had every intention to sit for a spell. Work is slow today so I found a few minutes. How is everyone?

Boo- Thank you for the sentiments on Bryson's graduation. It came all too fast. I can honestly say I'd raise him all over again in a heartbeat.

Spot- Did Miss Martha get mad about the parking space?

Billy Ray- Nobody can do it justice like Gomer. :)

Boo- Call the Midwife is such a good show!

Romeena- I'm sorry to hear about your friend. How are you feeling?

Big Maude- I'm glad you're able to attend the meet up! I don't know if I'll be able to make it but I'm glad y'all are going.

Floyd- Thank you for keeping the porch up and running.

MDC- What is the Summer of Me?

Well, I'd best get back to it. Y'all have a wonderful day today. Jesus loves you and so do I!

Blessings,
~Lucy

June 01, 2017 - Msg 107608: Oh! Real quick. I meant to tell y'all that my oldest son, Nicholas, just re-enlisted for 3 years in the Army. I was quite surprised but he loves it. He's a Corporal now and starts Sargent's school in 2 weeks. He will be in the Louisiana swamp most of the summer. He will switch to a new unit and move in January but they will not tell him where just yet. It will depend on him passing his course or not and availability of Sargent's needed. Well bye again!

June 01, 2017 - Msg 107611: Hey to everyone..took a minute to check in. Been pretty busy these days. I am about to start another work stretch so you may not hear from me for a few days. I feel like I am coming down with a cold, unfortunately. I thought I was going to escape the bad cold Sean had last week but I think it is getting ahold of me.. should be a bad work week.

Hope you all are doing well.

Ro, glad to hear you are on the mend. I can relate about the childhood lunches. I ate my weight in grill cheese sandwiches in elementary. I lived a block from the school and would walk home for lunch most days. Mom made a lot of grilled cheese with tomato soup and always seemed to have something good as a snack at the end of the school year. I have this distinct memory of coming home from a particularly rough and hot day (before air conditioning) of school and going into my little room to watch tv. Gomer Pyle reruns were on and I can remember sitting on the bed watching the little black and white tv, and mom bringing me a homemade brownie with a cold glass of milk. Mom's are the best. I miss my mom's cooking for sure. Simple, but good!

I don't spoil my kids with food as much as mom did, but she was a stay at home mom and loved doing it. I guess I can thank her in part for my weight issues. ;)

Well, have things to do so better get going. Hope you all have a terrific day. It has been raining like cats and dogs here today and some storms, too. My dogs are acting like paranoid freaks.

Adios!

Boo
