July 17, 2017 - Msg 107868: Good evening, porch. It's been a nice day, even though I spent part of the morning at the doctor's office. It was time for my annual Medicare wellness check anyway, so I let her check out my sore foot. I think I need an incant or something, but we don't have any buckeyes around here. Anyway, I told her I thought it had formed an abscess deep in the side of the foot, where the corner of the foot pedal jammed in. It never broke the skin, but it sure broke some veins or maybe a little artery in my foot, because the top of my foot and four of my toes are all black and purple now, where the blood has migrated. Anyway, she ordered an antibiotic just in case, and that should fix it. It doesn't really hurt much on its own, but is extremely tender to touch. I'm still not fully convinced I didn't break a bone. If it doesn't get better in a couple of days, I'll go get it x-rayed. It's been a week now. Clumsy me!

Big Maude, I'm glad Mr. Maude enjoys the emails. How did he like the little girl "conducting" the choir? I thought that was the cutest, sweetest thing I'd seen in a long time. Such drama! Facial expressions and all, and did you notice, she was right on the beat with the music? Really cute.

Well, guess I'll go watch a Hallmark movie. I've let it play for a while, I'll run it back now and start over, so I can buzz through the commercials. I just love doing that! Blessings, friends. --Romeena

I got erin off to church camp, somewhere near Austin, so it will be quiet around here. My brother and his wife flew back to California today and I will miss them. We had such a wonderful visit.

I am about to fall asleep so I had better turn in. Will be back tomorrow and check the archives.

July 18, 2017 - Msg 107871: Supper menu: Grilled ribeye steaks, loaded baked taters, tossed garden salad..how yall like yours cooked ? Med for me...SPOT

July 18, 2017 - Msg 107872: Good evening, porch. SPOT, thanks so much for dinner! I like mine rare, please. My dad once said he thought that with a little penicillin and some good nursing care, my steak might get well. (Sorry.) One good thing about liking rare beef, though -- if my steak arrives well done, I can still eat it. I might not enjoy it much, but I could eat it. However, if a person who wants it well done gets one that's rare, there's no way they can eat it. I do love a good ribeye. Usually quite tender and the flavor is great. Tenderloin is the only thing that's any more tender, and it doesn't have nearly as much flavor, besides costing a lot more. Yep, give me a good ribeye anytime. As for my tater, I like real butter, real sour cream, some cheese and chives, and a little crumbled bacon is nice, too. Also, if the skins were scrubbed well, I eat the taterskins too. Good stuff, and packed with vitamins. My salad? Any fresh garden greens will do, some cherry tomatoes, cukes, onion, and blue cheese or ranch dressing. Or whatever. I eat just about anything. I let the snails pass on by, but other than that, I'm not particular.

Boo, I hope you're off work tonight. Sounds like it's been really busy at your house lately, but fun. I'm sure you could use some rest, though. I'll be in Fredericksburg at the end of this month. Robbi's son, Gary, just got married in Chicago, and she's having a reception for them in the 'burg on the 29th. They had a very small church wedding in Chicago, attended by her family and friends, and Robbi and Richard, of course, then will have the reception for all of Gary's family here. I was so glad they did it that way, because traveling to Chicago was not on my list, not even for such a wonderful occasion. We have all met Elaine, and she's delightful. She's a physician on the staff of a hospital in Chicago, and just a charming, lovely person. I'm so happy for them both.

Well, I came across a recipe for "Wacky Cake" in a copy of the magazine that our own Charlotte Tucker edits, and I've got the ingredients, I think I'll make one. I used to have that recipe, many eons ago, but have lost it. It's really a good cake, and so easy and fun to make. Come by for some in the morning, I'll even make a pot of coffee. Blessings, porch. --Romeena

July 18, 2017 - Msg 107873: Oh, one more thing. Are any of you familiar with the "Tillamook" brand of dairy products? A couple of years ago, when our beloved Blue Bell creamery had an outbreak of listeria and had to recall all their ice cream and shut the factory down while they did a major overhaul, some other brands appeared in the gap. Tillamook was one. They started with ice cream in our stores, and it was well received. More recently, I've discovered their cheddar cheese, and friends, it's good! It tastes like cheese used to taste, it melts beautifully, and they have a very coarse shred, called "farmstyle shred", I think, that's wonderful. If your stores have it, and you haven't tried it, please do. I think you'll be glad you did. --Romeena

July 18, 2017 - Msg 107874: Romeena, I checked a couple of Mom & Pop pet shops around my area today, Sorry I couldn't find what you need, but I will keep my eyes open for your puppy toy.. I thought they would be the best shot for pay dirt...

July 18, 2017 - Msg 107875: Hi Ro, yes I need a rest but didn't get it today. I think tomorrow will be better. My old friend and fellow nurse and mentor, Gloria is coming over. Ro, I saw some of Robbi's pics of the wedding on facebook. What a cute couple those two are! I hope they are very happy.

I have never noticed the Tillamook brand but will look for it.

I would sit here longer but the battery is about to go dead and I don't know where the cable is to charge this laptop of Erin's. Hope everyone has a good evening

July 19, 2017 - Msg 107876: Awww, G-F. Thank you for trying. I'm hoping that someone, somewhere, will stumble upon one of those little pink hearts and recognize it. I know, I realize that Toye Starr is ridiculously spoiled, and I confess, I spoiled her myself, but that's a big part of the fun. She's spoiled in a good way. My children were spoiled in a good way, and I carried it over into my little four-footed "children" as well. None were allowed to be brats. They were taught to be polite and respectful, and obedient to their elders. They learned that bad behavior brought correction, and good behavior brought reward. It works equally well with both children and dogs. They were spoiled to being loved, and their little whims indulged when possible, but never permitted to behave rudely or to show disrespect. Spoiled, yes. Bratty? Never.

I wish everyone could be here with me and see the show that's playing in my back yard. There must be fifty birds out there. A woodp3cker is drilling a necklace of tiny holes around the trunk of a sycamore tree. A pair of cardinals is scouting out the feeding stones, searching for the remnants of the sunflower seeds I put out earlier in the week. Guess I should go put out some more. There are doves, bluejays, sparrows, wrens, a pair of chickadees, and a pair of very agitated mockingbirds. Apparently they have some new chicks, because they're making the squirrels' lives miserable today. Every time a squirrel appears, he's subjected to dive-bomb attacks, so he runs up a tree and gets into a heavily-leafed spot so the birds can't get him. Apparently, squirrels are interested in birds' nests. I guess they would eat the eggs. Why not? They'll eat anything else! Anyway, it's quite a show out there. I hate to leave, but I must. I have to go get my driver's license renewed, as it expires this month. Usually I can just do it online, but this year requires a new photo and an eye test. Rats. I hate to have my picture taken. I'm not worried about the vision test, my lens implants gave me 20/20 vision, which I never had before. Cataracts were a blessing!

Have a good day, folks, and remember to act like somebody! --Romeena

July 20, 2017 - Msg 107879: Morning all.

How is Old Man Kelsey's ocean looking MDC? I am envious. I hope your leg pumper thingy is working well.

Hey GF, Busy but not cool. Been very hot this summer. How are you doing? I had a neighbor who just got back from visiting Ohio last week. Said it rained on him and everything. He went to a Reds game. Not sure if he went to Canton. For me that would be a must visit if I ever get back that way.

I have to go get my DOT physical this morning. It used to be only once every two years, but now that I am on blood pressure medication it is every year. Oh well, I won't be having to deal with those too much longer. I have noticed some Doctors are real by the book kind of fellers. But I have found one who I really like. He has a good sense of humor and will work with you on things. So I always request my appointment with him.

Well I hope everyone has a blessed day and act like somebody.

July 20, 2017 - Msg 107881: Good morning, porch. Hot, sunny and dry here today. We have had some rain, but could definitely use a lot more. My water bill is creeping up, gets a little higher every month. I'm trying to hold it down, but I can't just sit here at this window and watch things dry up. I think I've created a monster with this yard.

Boo, I hope you're getting some rest and taking care of yourself. I know what it's like. Nursing wears you out in more ways than one. The physical demands are one thing, but the emotional demands can be even worse. You go in and do your job for 8 or 12 hours, but it doesn't end there. You go home and there's always a lot of things to do there, but that's life. The hard part comes when you try to settle down and rest, and a concern for a particular patient won't let you do it. You start to think back over the shift, and second-guess the things you said or did. It's just so hard not to do that. You care, that's why you became a nurse in the first place.

I got my driver's license renewed yesterday. The place was packed, but I was in and out in half an hour. The lady who helped me was amazed that I passed the vision test 100%, until I explained that I had lens implants! As for the new picture, it's horrible, of course. It looks like a prison mug shot, all droopy and sad-eyed. However, like I told the lady, if an officer ever stopped me and was writing a ticket, that's about the way I'd look at that moment, so I guess it's okay.

MDC, I hope things are going well at the reunion, and that you're feeling great! Is the swelling in your legs going down? Have a wonderful time, and we want to hear all about it when you get home.

Well, better get dressed. Eddie is here to mow, and I need to go out and discuss a couple of things with him. Have a wonderful day, and don't forget to count your blessings! --Romeena

July 22, 2017 - Msg 107893: Thank you, TOM, what a lovely poem. You always come up with such beautiful things. Good to see you - glad your end of the porch is getting rain. Wish you could send some our way. Things are pretty dry around here. I dread seeing my next water bill.

I received the first set of proofs from the publisher, so my little book is moving along. They require my approval on the cover design, and also on the layout and design of the text, as well as my verification that there are no corrections or additions to be made. So, once again, I'm reading my own book! For about the umpteenth time. I'm glad to have this opportunity, though, because I'm halfway through and have found two errors. One is mine - a word in a sentence is just not there, and when I checked in the copy I sent in, it's not there, either! The other is theirs, they used "path" instead of "pathway" in the sub-title, but I'm allowed to request correction on both. I'm going to finish reading, in case there are any other errors. How I overlooked that missing word, I don't know, because I truly have read it at least a dozen times. You know what? Writing a book is a lot of work! Well, I'm beat, and considering going to the ironing board early for a change. Have a good evening, everyone. --Romeena

July 23, 2017 - Msg 107894: Good Sabbath evening porch. I made it home safely from the Mayberry meet up this afternoon.

It was a great week end and I had a wonderful time meeting everyone and being part of things. My thanks to GF for driving me to The Loaded Goat on Thursday and to the place we ate on Friday night. We had a good crowd both nights, good food and good fellowship. The events at the Mayberry Motor Inn at the gazebo were loads of fun as well. I won a door prize!! a jar of Aunt Bea's kerosene cucumbers. so now we can say they made it all the way to Northeast Tennessee. I also had the honor of meeting Thelma Lou in person and got her autograph at the Andy Griffith museum. Betty Lynn was very gracious and took time with every single person who stood in line to meet her which took over 3 hours to get everyone thru. I left Mt. Airy with some new friends and lots of memories. looking forward to going next year. My thanks to GF for encouraging me to go and to our own Floyd and his lovely wife Jan for hosting the event and for making everyone feel welcome and special for just being there.

Romeena: you will have to let us know when and where we can get a copy of your book when it is released.

Guess I beter go and get things ready for work tomorrow.

July 24, 2017 - Msg 107902: Good morning, porch. Thanks so much for all the birthday wishes, they are very much appreciated. A party at O'Malley's sounds like fun! I'll be there with bells on!

We had some rain last night, sure was a welcome sight. Of course it sends the weeds into a growing frenzy, but everything else likes it too. Apparently there was some strong wind along with it, because I see that one of my potted plumerias was blown over. I don't know how those things get blown over, as heavy as they are, but they do. I'd love to grow them in the ground, but they're such highly tropical plants that even our mild winters are too much for them. So I keep them in enormous pots and bring them into the garage in the winter. They drop all their leaves and go dormant - I don't even water them. Then in the spring, I get someone big and strong to haul them around to the back yard again, water them really well, and in a couple of weeks they begin to leaf out again. I have one red one and one that blooms white, and both are in bloom at the moment.

Well, better get busy. I think Dave and family are cooking up something for tonight, bless their little hearts. Have a great day, everyone. --Romeena

My wife and I are "decompressing" today, and will drive home tomorrow, hoping "Tuesday traffic" will be pretty decent. My legs held up so-so, but did not want to miss this. I go back to PT on Thursday. The compression socks and pump sleeves worked pretty well.
More later, just wanted to do a checkpoint chickie with y'all!

Just my guess.
HAPPY BIRTHDAY ROMEENA!

MDC

July 26, 2017 - Msg 107908: I've seen a lot of dairy products, Romeena, but I have never come across a brand called Tillamook. I will have to keep an eye out for it.
Hope you had a very happy Birthday, by the way.

Noah and I are fixing up our bachelor pad this week, since the women are in Tucson, AZ until next Tuesday. The wife is going to her Up With People reunion there, and brought Kai with her. And of course her mom had to tag along, since she kept up with my wife's castmates more than my wife did and would like nothing better than to get Kai interested in it so she can have another crop of castmates to stalk. Kai had told me OTR that she wants nothing to do with joining that kind of thing, which is fine by me.
I think they were in some of you porchsters' neck of the woods earlier. They stopped in Amarillo, TX to visit an Uncle and Aunt there. I forgot, but is that anywhere near you, Romeena or Boo?

So it is just Noah and I this week. And my boss has been superb and very helpful in doing some rescheduling of my work hours and other things. She is even allowing Noah to come with me to work tomorrow. I mean, I only work 3 1/2 hours tomorrow(one of my short days), but what boss does that? It was even her idea, because she knew my in-house babysitters(wife and Kai) were going to be away. I normally work in the children's section of the library, so Noah will have a lot of fun things to play with and do.
As for our bachelor pad, I have already hung up the beads on the doors and put the pillows on the floor. Now we just need Andy and his girl to come over so we can have a dance party with that groovy music.

Glad you had a neat week, MDC. And that you are doing better.

July 26, 2017 - Msg 107913: Hi everyone, sorry its been so long. My computer is still in pieces but wanted to check in. I am trying to use Erin's laptop but I have a hard time typing on this keyboard.

Sterling, Amarillo I a very long way from where I live. It takes about 10 hours to get there from here. It's not so far from Romeena, though.

I forgot to wish Romeena a happy Birthday, so Happy Belated Birthday, friend. I hope and pray this next year of your life brings improved health and many happy surprises. Love you.

We have had a fairly good summer this year and I just have not suffered nearly as much as usual with the heat for some reason. It is still in the 80's in the facility I work in but usually the low 80's and I have about 6 fans going at all times, so I can handle it. The census is still very low (less than 50 now, so I am hanging in there right now and hoping it doesn't close down soon). It really is an easy job for a nurse and I don't mind going into work each day, so that is a blessing.

Sean will be finishing up his schooling starting in August. He is taking the last 2 courses he needs to get his level 1 and level 2 certificates in automotive technology. He is looking for anoter part time job right now. He struggles daily from depression, mostly due to his same-s#x attraction. I hurt for him and have so many questions. I pray for guidance and how to help but I feel so stuck sometimes. He is still going to church and has not given in to his feelings but he is understandably conflicted.

Erin went to church camp near Austin and had a wonderful time, even with a sprained ankle. She didn't get to do all the things the other kids did but she enjoyed it anyway. She will start athletics and summer basketball soon if her ankle permits. She is fairly accident prone!

Bruce has been obsessing of the grass and taking out trees that are making too much shade for the new grass to grow. It sure is looking pretty tough and the yard has just come to life with squirrels and birds. I see lots of cardinals out here in the morning, and mockingbirds, and the hawk is still making daily visits trying to get my squirrels. It seems that the place feels much cooler with all the grass. I think the sun reflected off the white sand and just made the heat worse before.

Well, I hope all of you are well and hanging in there.

Love,
Boo

July 27, 2017 - Msg 107914: Yes sir, G-F, I believe Howard did love his root beer. At least that's what I remember him asking for when he was at the lodge.
Thanks for posting the link to the video of the meet up. Makes me wish I lived closer to NC. Doing Floyd's voice just seems like it is second nature to Allan now, he does it so well. He also does a pretty good Bert Miller too.

Asa, I had one of your kind(and G-F's too, I think) here a few days before the wife and daughter went on their trip. Yup, the ac went out. Was blowing inside, but the fan wasn't going outside, so it wasn't getting cool. No noise or anything outside, and I had it figured to be a bad contactor. Well, it was, but it was also the capacitor. So "the Man" changed both of them, and we were up and running again. I was just glad it wasn't the compressor because I was looking them up and seeing as how our outside unit is so old, it would be more cost effective in the long run just to get a whole new unit. And that was not something I wanted to even think about with their trip coming up and knowing how much that was going to be already.

Wow, ten hours, Boo?! I forget how big Texas is I guess. It takes 10 hours for us to drive from WI down to IN(Indianapolis).

I for one would be happy to hear about your problems, John Masters. So don't feel like you are burdening anybody. This is a place we can voice our problems, after all. And hopefully unburden, ourselves.

Hey Spot, I'll have my eggs scrambled, please. Actually I don't really like eggs all that much, but thank you anyway. Good luck with your storms.

Well, Noah wasn't too much of a pain at the library today when I took him to work. Oh, what am I saying, ...the other workers all wanted to bring him home with them, if that tells you anything.
Yes, he's cute and polite there, but just wait til they get him home.

July 27, 2017 - Msg 107915: Hey John Masters, your Royal are hot on the trail of our "Tribe" should be a close one to the end. The Indians have been SO streaky this year, long winning streaks only to be followed by a long losing streak...Humm Wonder what causes that?

Here is the link to Floyd's Monday podcast about the Mayberry Meet-Up https://www.facebook.com/TwoChairs/ If you watch close you'll see our Big Maude relaxing watching the episodes.

Floyd did a Bible study on Sunday morning before we all hit the road to go home. He will post it soon..

Yes, a GREAT time was had by ALL..And there was cake! 🎂 to boot!...👍

July 27, 2017 - Msg 107916: Good afternoon, porch. It's beautiful here today, but hot. Dang hot, at 98° and climbing, with a humidity of 37%. I walked to the end of the driveway to get the paper and broke a sweat before I got back in the house!

Boo, it sounds like a few things are leveling off a little around your funny farm. I hope so, and hope they continue. I pray for Sean, that's a heavy load that boy is carrying, and a difficult one, made more so by our current society, which seems to be encouraging the problem, and actually in some cases, with peer pressure, creating one where it doesn't really exist.

Sterling, Texas is awfully big. I'm about halfway to Amarillo from where Boo is, and it's still about 360 miles from Dallas to Amarillo, a five to six hour drive. Then to the nearest Texas border from Amarillo, it's nearly another hundred miles. We're all so used to it, we don't give it a second thought, but my MIL in Michigan once commented on how we measure distance. She said that in Michigan if you ask someone how far it is to somewhere, they will answer in miles, like "it's about 140 miles." In Texas, we answer in driving time - "it's about a two-hour drive." Miles don't mean a lot when ranch land is measured in sections, not acres. A section is a square mile. On many Texas ranches, when you turn off the highway and enter your gate, it may be another mile or two before you get to the house. Of course, I have a little quarter-acre city lot, but I live in town. My "ranching" consists of keeping the birds, squirrels, and an occasional possum or raccoon fed. Oh well.

John Masters, I agree with Sterling. If you've got a problem, son, spit it out! We'll listen! We've all shared our troubles, problems, griefs and joys for a long time now. That's what a family does, and we're a porch family.

Floyd's Bible studies are great. He always does one on Sunday morning on the Mayberry cruises, and Eloise and I enjoyed them very much. It wasn't lost on the ship's staff and other guests, either. We always had a reserved room, but people sort of hung around in the background and listened in, especially the staff. Good witness.

Well, I'd better run. Got laundry going, and things to do. Blessings, friends. --Romeena

July 27, 2017 - Msg 107917: Hi guys,

I hate to hit and run. I hope you dont think I dont have time to read others but time to air my problems. In a fast nutshell...landlord had new air system put in our house, air guys that installed system told him duct work under house had been re-routed by other tennants and new system wouldnt work and house would still be hot, landlord had them do it anyway. Wife, father and I have been battling these 87 and 88 degree temps IN house. Got ahold of air guy, he reveals why air isnt working, we tell landlord he isnt getting any more rent until problem fixed! He has agreed to fix AND we got two portable ACs on HIS tab (taking out of the rent). There's a lot more complicated twists to this, but that's the scoop. FIL in Philippines, niece is visiting for a week longer, 87 year old dad fighting this heat. Not getting much sleep. Everyone irritable, cranky. NOT a good week!

My best to all of you. Be back asap!

July 27, 2017 - Msg 107918: Shouldve been clearer. As it's been 97, 99, 100 outside, it's been 85, 86, 87 INside.

July 27, 2017 - Msg 107919: HI ALL! Well, I've had a few days to "de-compress" after the big reunion last weekend. I am back at PT tomorrow, but under medicare only get 4 more sessions. But I do have the leg sleeves and pump, so that is good. Also, a guy at the reunion told me to try acupuncture. I was a little leary as that is an eastern practice, but found a clinic near my home that is run an American woman, and her credentials are varied.
She told me on the phone that she is Christian, no buddas in her place etc; and only uses one-time-use disposable sterile needles, so I am going to give it a try to try to stimulate the lymph nodes more.
It looks like the porch is doing OK these days.
It is still in the 108-109 range here in Phx, but the short respite in SB was great!
More later,
God bless,
MDC

July 28, 2017 - Msg 107920: Good to see you back home MDC. I hope the acupuncture will help.

Been a very sad week here. A couple of days ago a small plane crashed on one of our major Freeways shortly after taking off from a nearby airport. There were two younger couples on board who all died in the fiery crash. They each had 4 children. So very sad. I had driven right through the area moments before the crash. And both couples were from the area that I live. My prayers are for those eight children left behind. Very difficult situation for them for sure.

July 28, 2017 - Msg 107921: Oh, Asa! How sad, how tragic! It makes me remember once again how easily I could have lost my son a few months ago, when he had to make that emergency landing in that field. God was definitely protecting him that day. Both of the plane's wings were ripped off, with one of them holding 40 gallons of fuel. He was unable to get out of the cabin without help, and said he just sat there and waited for the fire to erupt, but it never did. That beautiful, graceful plane was a total loss, but my son was spared. Only God, only God, and I am so grateful. Those poor children! To lose both parents is bad enough, but in such a horrific manner! Some things are hard to understand. I definitely join you in prayer for those children.

Blessings, porch! --Romeena

July 28, 2017 - Msg 107922: Asa, I saw that on the news, was wondering if that was close to you...Sad...Sad...Along with the fair accident at the Ohio State fair where one was killed and several are in critical condition when they were thrown from a amusement ride.
The young man who was killed was due to be shipped out to the Marines in a few days.... Prayers .....

July 28, 2017 - Msg 107923: Prayers for those children, Asa. That's just incomprehensible and so sad.Ditto about the tragedy at the Ohio State Fair.Such a terrible thing.
Sorry about the A/C trouble you're having, John Masters. Hope everything gets taken care of-it's too dang hot to try to live without A/C!
Take care, MDC and hope everyone has a nice weekend- y'all get ready for the Possum & Boo Double Birthday Bash! (Sunday is me, Monday is Boo) We'll have it over in Yancey at the Gigolo Club since O'Malley's home from Detroit & we can't use his cabin. July 29, 2017 - Msg 107924: Thanks everyone for joining me in those prayers for those two families. I am certain they are appreciated and will be felt. According to many who saw this happen felt that perhaps the pilot was having engine problems right after take off and was trying to circle back to the airport, but didn't have enough power and altitude to make it. It also appeared he may have made a maneuver to avoid hitting an office building just next to the freeway that resulted in a near nosedive into the freeway. So very sad. Romeena, I am so glad your Son survived his crash landing. The plane these guys were in is a Beechcraft Bonanza, has been nicknamed the "Doctor Killer" in the flying world. When it first came on the market it was a very popular plane for Doctors who flew to buy. But I read it is a more challenging plane to fly and it had more than a few crashes early on.

GF, I saw the video of that carnival disaster. So very sad also. It seems amazing that there was just one fatality from that. Prayers for his family.

Possum and Boo the Birthday girls. Is Yancey up for the double celebration is the question. :)

John, I hope you can get the a/c issue resolved soon. This heat really takes it's toll on man and machine.

Well off to mow the lawn. Then tomorrow I am speaking in a Church service at a nearby Assisted living facility. So I need to practice my delivery. I want to do a good job because those are special folks.

Prayers for all.
