February 18, 2018 - Msg 109276: Aww Boo, we love you and your family. I know a lot of families that are grappling with these same issues. My Sister in Law (my Wifes sister) has a Son who has announced his orientation quite a few years ago. The sad thing with him is that he is quite radical and loud about it (if you know what I mean) and always ends up in abusive relationships. He has been beat to a pulp on more than one occasion, always by his chosen partner. Then another Sister in Law who has a Daughter who came out years ago, who is also a bit loud about her lifestyle, although not quite as much. Her younger brother has confided to my oldest Daughter that he also is g@y but has not been able to tell his parents because of the pain he knows it will cause them. It's very sad because he is in his early 40's now. I know when I was a young feller and knew everything, I thought it was a learned lifestyle. And although there may be some situations where that is the case, anymore I think there is more to it than I can understand. I am so glad you are strong in your faith and your relationship with God. I know he can and will see you through this. Neither of my SIL's have that, and they are quite in a turmoil. And I am glad you able to come here and unburden yourself somewhat. I just wish we were all closer so we could share a group hug, because I bet you could use one.(......) That's the bast we can do I guess, and hold you up in prayer.

Love you Boo.

February 19, 2018 - Msg 109279: Tom, thank you for that beautiful verse!
BOO-- my prayers for you also. One question tho,
do you think that she may have been 'taught' this in school? I think you mentioned that she is currently in a
public school, and i have heard that they really are pushing that a lot these days. There are also wide open TV show, such as that stupid Modern Family show that glorifies the lifestyle.
It is tough because besides the old testament,
there are also new testament verses about it.
I know that the following is very different, but I am currently sponsoring my sil in gamblers anonymous, and she is really making progress
overcoming her addiction!
OK, I'll shove my soapbox back under the porch.
As you know, I am currently in the Lenten season where we remember Jesus' 40 day fast in the desert, and we know that the Word says that some demons, (sins) are overcome only thru much prayer and fasting. Just a thought.
Many prayers for all,
Love you all,

February 19, 2018 - Msg 109281: Yes, MDC, our culture really seems to be trying to push us into accepting it and I am sure the schools don't help, but there aren't any groups coming into the school or clubs, etc. I think mostly, it is just society..as you said, TV, movies, music. You really cant get away from it anymore unless you move to the wilderness and off the grid. There are support groups that are helpful for some who don't want to live the lifestyle but they have to be at that point. I am a little afraid of the support groups because I think there are actual predators who attend to find vulnerable kids there. For now, Erin is telling me that it is what it is but that she loves God and wants his will for her life, without limits. In other words, she is leaving it up to God and is not saying she wont live a straight life in the future. She has enough faith to say that for some reason she has these feelings, doesn't hate herself for something she can't help, and is willing to say that God may use it. That may be hard to understand for those who aren't in our position, but I see it as very hopeful. I am considering starting a savings account for her future wedding..kind of a step of faith for me. We will see.

Thanks for the prayers and concerns!

Boo

February 19, 2018 - Msg 109282: Oh, and one other thing, MDC, that you might find comforting is that my sister, Susan, who prayers harder than I do and loves Erin so much, said that she feels sure that Erin will be ok. She really thinks this is a phase and that when she is grown there will be a man she will love. I hope so. She did tell me that she genuinely loved one her boyfriends last year but didn't have "those feelings" for him. I tell her I didn't have those feelings at her age, either, and that she shouldn't be surprised if they come later when the right man comes along. We are all different and go through changes. I was a very slow bloomer when it came to men. I didn't even really kiss a guy until I was out of college. I didn't do anything with a guy until I met Bruce and I was 27 by then. Its ok to be that way, but society pushes them into thinking they have to fit into a mold and that they should have all these feelings when they are young. It's crazy but we are trying to teach her without pushing her away. God will get us all through this but probably not without bumps and bruises. :)

I'm stopping by for a super quick rock. I just wanted y'all to know that I think of y'all everyday even when I don't pop in.

Boo- I am so proud of you for the way you're handling the situation with Erin. I'm sure it breaks your heart. I too think it is probably just a phase, but if it isn't that does not mean you will love her any less.

I am selfishly saddened by the death of Billy Graham. He wanted to go home and I'm glad he is for his sake. I hope that Franklin and the rest of the family will carry on his legacy well.

MDC- Praying for your family member and Joan!

Hey to everyone else. I need to get ready for work. I was up early to take Bryson to work (he's 19 and still refuses to learn to drive!) so I had a moment to pop on after my devotions. Everyone have a very blessed day and act like somebody!

~Lucy Matthews

February 23, 2018 - Msg 109300: Good morning, porch! Sorry I've been scarce, just been very busy. It's cold, rainy and dreary here today, so I will probably just stay tucked in here at home. Joe is coming by around noon to see what's wrong with the sump pump system that keeps my back yard drained. We've had about five inches of rain, the pump isn't working, and water is ankle deep in places in my yard. Much more rain, which is predicted, and water will come in the back door into the sunroom. That room was built on the original roofed patio, so it's lower than the rest of the house by about two inches. That's enough to let water in, on this flat-as-a-pancake land.

Lucy Matthews, I agree with you. I'm in awe of Boo and the love and maturity she's showing, and hope you're right about Erin. I agree, she doesn't sound like she's confirmed her feelings, I think she's confused and searching. The social climate today fosters confusion, and pushes kids into questioning their own feelings.

Bill Medwin, Tillie is fine, thank you for asking. After shelling out some pretty big bucks, she's now running great. Shifts like silk, no more thumps, and no more warning lights. In the quest for answers and fixes, she received: Three new motor mounts, a new vacuum modulator (whatever that is), a new catalytic converter, an oil and filter change, repair and closure of four (count 'em, four) minor oil leaks, and (ta-da) a total rebuild of her transmission, with replacement of any internal parts that were worn. I now have a happy car and an empty checking account, but Tillie and I should have many happy miles together ahead of us. She has now passed inspection and has a new 2018 license. Oh, and following Gomer's suggestion, I'm going to give her a good wash, if it ever stops raining.

Well, Joe will be here any minute, guess I'd better finish tidying up the kitchen. He'll eat lunch here, no doubt. Blessings, friends. --Romeena

February 23, 2018 - Msg 109302: GF--Here is what our local Cactus league reporter says about your Indians: "The departure of first baseman Carlos Santana will hurt, but they brought in Yonder Alonso to fill that gap. The return of outfielder Michael Brantley should help shore up the lineup. The pitching staff, with a 3.30 staff ERA, returns almost in its entirety, as do the Cleveland foodie specials of Cleveland Polish Boys and the Skyline Chili Dog, along with Bertman's Ballpark Mustard." :)
One question I have... did Santana go back to his band?? haha

Thank you so much for your positive comments and prayers. You all are great Mayberry-ites and I love you all. It helps more than you know (well, some of you know) to be able to get it out in the open and share it with my friends.

So glad to hear that you are up and busy and doing so much better, MDC. Don't forget to rest, too.

I was sad about Billy Grahams passing, too, but it was bittersweet. Happy for him, sad for us. He certainly lived a full life and was a blessing to millions.

February 23, 2018 - Msg 109306: ROmeena, I also say "here, here" regarding Tillie.
Glad you finally have the issue solved. Wow, 5 inches of rain, a real gully washer for sure.
Funny, I also enclosed a back patio which is a little lower than the rest of the house. When we have our "monsoon" storms in August I set out a sump pump next to the back sidewalk to prevent water from rising there.
GF and TOM--Yes the two teams share a stadium, as most of them do here, like my D-Backs and the Rockies. Did I tell you that there used to be a big Goodyear rubber plant where the town of Goodyear is now, hence the name? There is still a blimp base and maintenance facility there these days.
LUCY--good to see ya. Thanks for dropping by.
I visited Joan Z yesterday. Both the pneumonia and blood sugar are much better now. Those
IV antibiotics are really something. She is not out of the woods yet however. Thanks for the prayers. BOO--trying to stick to more fish and lean meats has really helped me, plus I do the light cardio workout every other day.

February 24, 2018 - Msg 109307: Good Saturday morning all.

Hey to Lucy. Glad you popped in.

MDC, You sounded real professional with your sports report. I was just waiting for you to finish it with "now let's switch it over to Katie and see what the traffic looks like". :) I'm glad Joan is responding to the treatment. Prayers continue.

GF, Last year with on of the many pin hole leaks I have been dealing with, one of them was directly over a Weil McLain boiler. It has one of those solid state electronic controls on it. And it has a big warning on it that if it gets wet, to replace immediately. I called there tech support to ask them if I should replace it, because it had gotten wet from the leak, and they said without doubt, replace it. Failure to do so could cause catastrophic failure. So seeing how I have 10 of these units, and that it was going to take several weeks for the factory to get me a replacement, I got the ok to order two of them. One to replace the wet one, and one for a spare back up. Well yesterday we got hit with a good wet heavy 6 inches of snow that kept me busy most of the day. At lunch time, sitting at my desk eating away, I could hear a drip, drip, drip. I looked around and found the roof leaking onto the top of a metal storage cabinet. And in that cabinet was stored the spare control, and on that control was water, dripping from the cabinet. I thought, what are the odds. Oh well, that's life, through and through. 10-4? I bet you have some stories too.

Romeena, I am glad you got Tillie purring like a kitten, but sorry it got so pricey.

Frankie, Sounds like you enjoy sports. My Grandkids are into snowboarding, and they came over last night to watch it at the Olympics. Them young-uns sure do some flips in the air.

Boo, Sorry everyone is ailing. I hope you don't get it too.

Well off visit my Wheeler for a spell. My back has been sending me some warning messages. I have learned to try and listen to "him who must be obeyed"!

Asa

February 24, 2018 - Msg 109308: Yep Asa...I know the feeling!..The stories I could tell too...Like the time when I also had a Well McClain boiler that had a pin hole leak in a water line 8’ away from it. I tell you, a person could NOT have duplicated it if they TRIED!
The water sprayed DIRECTLY onto the control, then it ricocheted to the circulation pump taking it out also!...If that wasn’t enough, it caused the boiler to overheat which cracked the heat exchanger...Yes this was a TRIFECTA of Tragedy!..
I guess if you started with the pin hole leak you can call it a ”quadfecta” and I ain’t talkin’ about horse racing!...lol

We need to write a book “You Can’t Make This Stuff Up!” But people just wouldn’t believe it, would they Buddy?”....

Romeena - I know what you mean about cars. My 2003 Cadillac has 246+K miles on it and every so often it will start smoking and has stalled a few times but it keeps on going! We've already decided that once that catalytic converter goes so does it.

Boo - You take care of yourself so that you don't get it! Are you still vegan?

MDC - Yes sir, antibiotics are a real blessing. I'm glad that Joan is doing better!

Frankie - I'm sorry that I don't know the answer to this question, but are you a Frankie as in Frank or Frankie as in Francesca?

Hey to everyone I missed like Spot, PH, G-F, Possum!

Before I go, I need to ask y'all for prayers for Nick, my oldest. Many of y'all know that he is in the Army. Well, he's been promoted to Sergeant! Though I am excited for him, this put him up to be deployed. He left for the Middle East on Tuesday. I am not at liberty to say where as of yet. Those that have been on here with me since I began in 2007-ish remember that we went through a horrible time getting custody of him, his teenage years, and more. He's matured and is doing well but now he's in a dangerous area. Please pray for his safety but also his faith. He lost it along the way and now that he's in a dangerous place and something could easily happen to him I'm worried about his eternal life. I'd appreciate it!

Blessings to you and yours,

Yes, I am still vegan and still feeling good, thanks for asking. I am taking care of myself and so far I havent caught anything they have had this winter. I guess I have improved my immune function.

Poor Bruce was positively bad about get sick, yet again. I couldnt help but laugh..awful, but you just had to be there when he looked at me with those watery eyes and red nose. teehee Poor guy had to rough it at home this evening with no one to take care of him, too. At least I will be there tomorrow. I feel like I have been taking care of sick family members for weeks on end...I guess I have.

I'm here at work and bored stick this evening. I have done all there is to do, even shredded documents. Boring. Easy money, I guess. I still have an hour before I get out of here. Seems these days it is either busy or boring and not much in between.

Well, you all have a good Sabbath Day, don't work too hard.
MDC

February 25, 2018 - Msg 109315: Good Sabbath all.

Yep GF, We could write a book or two I suspect. Odd things of maint. men. I remember years ago when I was bringing a hydronic heating system on line for the season in an office building. It had 3 separate, but identical boilers, all tied into the same system. Anyway, the entire system was acting odd. It was coming up to temperature quick, and then shut down, and then fire up again, yet my system temps were not getting very warm. All three boilers and all three boiler gauges were reading temps and pressures were good. But something was not right. I spent two days trying to figure it out. I had never been trained in boilers per say, so I wasn't the brightest bulb in the package for sure. I was thinking maybe there was a major air lock in the system or both of the circulating pumps were bad, although they were both humming along nicely. Finally I cracked open a line to see if indeed it was an air lock and maybe I could bleed it off. Well the only thing I was getting out of the open line was some hot air. It finally dawned on me that the system was almost void of water. How could that be, asked myself? All three boiler gauges show 20 PSI. Well you guessed it by now, all three gauges were defective on the pressure side. I mean what are the chances of that? I discovered that the pressure regulator on the make up water feed was stuck closed and so there was no water coming into the system. After replacing it, and all three boiler gauges, I was able to get water into the system, and it started working like a champ. Just so folks understand, a boiler gauge has two gauges in one. One reads temperature and the other reads pressure. We read this gauges to help us know how the system is doing, much like a Nurse or Doctor uses instruments to measure various things of the human body. The idea of all three gauges going bad was just crazy. I remember thinking that if I didn't know better I'd say I was out of water, but my gauges all said otherwise. I sure felt like a genius and a knucklehead at the same time. But I bet old GF can relate to that feeling, 10-4 buddy? lol The only thing I have never been able to figure out is where all the water went to. That still baffles me. It's a closed system, and in an office building a leak would be very obvious. The only thing I can think is that at sometime a pressure relief valve on one of the boilers must have activated and bled off a lot of the water. Go figure.

Lucy, for sure, Prayers for Nick, for his safety and for you to feel calmness. Thank him for me for his serving.

Boo, Bored stick? lol That's pretty boring. Sorry your family is ailing so. MDC, I didn't know sugar could hamper the immune system. I have been reading some about the evils of high fructose corn syrup though, and how soda pop in particular is loaded with the stuff. I don't drink pop like I used to, but I still enjoy a cold Pepsi on a hot summer day.

MDC and Frankie, I was watching the bob sled and also the Skeleton racing the other night. Yes indeed, the haul donkey! lol

Well I reckon I best go see if I need to go into work this morning. We got some snow last night, but I just got a dusting at home. Sometimes work can have a lot more than I see.

Prayers for all for a great Sabbath day.

February 25, 2018 - Msg 109319: MDC, Frankie Flint was only in one show that I can remember. I think I had just seen that show when I joined the chat and decided on that name.
Olympics all finished we really enjoyed watching them. Summer Olympics in two years.
Nice western on INSP cable with John Wayne called Chism.
You all have a nice evening.

February 25, 2018 - Msg 109320: MDC,Bruce doesn't drink soda often but uses to much sugar in his tea. He has gotten the lecture from me more than once about consumption of sugar and immune function. He is trying to make some positive changes but isn't willing to give up as much as he should...or I should say, not willing to eat a lot of the things he should be eating.

I took the kids to the movies tonight because I hear the movie...something train to Paris was good. I was pretty bored with it until the end but anyway, I wanted to do something with the kids. I took them to one of those theaters that have really comfy seats and they bring the popcorn and drinks to you. I ate some popcorn and boy, was it good.

I have been reading back over some of the archives from spring of 2003. Some of the things I posted about Erin at age 2 are so funny, but I don't know how I survived. She was something else..still is. I noticed that back then I seemed to be so sweet and simple compared to now. Life's events have weathered me. I always wanted to end up a sweet old lady but...well, we will see. haha

Better finish up some things in the kitchen and sit down with a cup of tea before bed.

February 26, 2018 - Msg 109321: Hello Porch: Boo mentions 2003. I wasn't aware the porch was this old. I stumbled across the TAGS website and the front porch about five years ago. Glad I did because it gives the fake news a different twist at times, and also it's just fun to read. Sort of keeps Mayberry alive long after TAGS ended. TAGS not being on much on the weekends allows me to recharge my interest for the upcoming Monday through Friday episodes. I seen Thelma Lou on a episode of The Mod Squad this weekend on Decades. She looked lost without the Mayberry gang. I have to go now and tend to my betting slips. I mean barber chairs. Medwin Bill Medwin

BILL--I sort of stumbled onto the porch as well back around 2004, and "watched" Boo's Erin grow up.
We get Decades on broadcast TV here and i enjoy those weekend 'binges.' Watched about 5 "Millionaires" a few weeks back!
BOO--glad he doesnt drink too much pop, and he can always take some supplements
like cinnamon, vitamin C and garlic to enhance the immune system, plus plenty of sleep. Poor sleep can be a real drain too. Just some thoughts.
My wife and I saw Murder on the Orient Express at the 3 dollar theater the other day. It was a well done remake.
Wow, it will soon be March!

February 27, 2018 - Msg 109327: Good morning, porch! Well, we had a day of intermittent sunshine yesterday, and today the sky is all clabbered up again, looking like it's about to have a temper tantrum. Joe used the dry day to come and check my sump pump, which was not running. I had checked it after I noticed that the water was rising close to my back door. It was humming, but not pumping anything. I unplugged it, of course. Joe brought another pump, one of his, and put it in the catch basin. It immediately started pumping water to the street, big old geyser at the curb. He's coming back next week with a new pump. The one he's replacing is just about two years old, if that, so I'm not thrilled with such an early failure, but it's very weird. On the flat bottom of the pump, right in the center of the base, it looks like someone took a sharp knife and cut a perfect 1.5" diameter circle in that rubber (plastic?) base, leaving just about 3/4" of the circumference still intact. Obviously, the pump won't function properly with a leak in its housing. Since I'm sure no one did that intentionally, I'm puzzled about how that cut-out got there. Weird.

There are tenants in some of my squirrel houses. One is a squirrel, but one of the others is a mystery. It may be a little possum. I know someone is in there, because I see various arrangements of nesting material at times behind the doorway, and once I saw the top of a little head and a pair of ears, but just a glimpse. I couldn't tell what it was. I did see a possum on the tree a few days ago, but it never went into the box, and something was in there at the time, because I could see the nesting stuff moving around now and then. I thought it might be that little possum pair that occupied the box for a few days a while back, but the one on the tree never approached the box. Right now, there's a small curved stick just behind the doorway, and it wasn't there yesterday, so there's activity. If the tenant is a possum, I'll probably never see the babies, since possums are mostly nocturnal. If it's a squirrel, I'll have a couple of days of hilarious entertainment, then they'll move on. Of course, there's always the possibility that it's an owl, sitting on eggs, but the little glimpse I got of the top of a head didn't look like an owl. Still, I only had a brief second or two, so it really could be anything. I've got my binoculars at the ready, and some free time this week, so maybe I'll see something I can identify.

Well, guess I'll go clean up the kitchen. I almost never go to bed and leave my kitchen messy, but I did last night. I had cooked a good supper and wanted to eat while it was still hot, so I went to my "wheelerette" and ate, got sleepy, fell asleep and awoke at 2 a.m. I didn't even go back in the kitchen, just went to bed, so I've got a skillet to wash, a dishwasher to unload and some dirty dishes to reload. I've also got a full laundry hamper, guess I'd better address that issue as well. Have a wonderful day, everyone! --Romeena

Well, been working a lot but am now off for 3 days and plenty catching up to do.

No news, really, just wanted to check in. Hope you are all having a good evening.

February 28, 2018 - Msg 109329: HI ALL, well, I guess I am getting to be a "noticer!" While watching the ep tonight where Luke Comstock comes to Mayberry with a rifle, when Andy sends Bee and Opie to Clara's the table is still full of dirty dishes. Then just a few moments later, the table is cleared and there is a flower arrangemnet in the center! I guess that "technically" Andy could have done all that whilst waiting for Luke, but seems unlikely.
Cue this up to 16:20 and you'll see all the dirty dishes, then go to 18:00 and the table is cleared.

RO- your backyard is sure a critter paradise!!
That is so neat. All we get here is lizards. ha
I guess I'll go do some adventure sleeping.
Believe me, when my wife puts her cold feet
on my legs at the same time she is 'stealing' the
blanket...it's an adventure! :)

February 28, 2018 - Msg 109330: Yeah MDC, I'd say that qualifies you as a trained notice buddy. I had never caught that one before. Maybe Clara Edwards slipped over and cleaned up so that old Luke didn't think he was visiting some pigs. :) BTW, Did you learn any new knots?

Romeena, I wonder if there was some kind of knock out that was in that pump housing that came out. That or maybe some object got caught in the impeller and made the hole. At one of the properties I deal with, all of the storm water has to be pumped out to a nearby river. There are two very large sump pumps that sit in a vault that is a good 20 feet underground. Anyway one day when doing a yearly P.M. on them I noticed that when I turned one of them on, I was seeing a lot of swirling in the sump, and it was taking a lot longer to pump than the other pump. So we had to pull it out (not a small task because of how large they are. After getting it out and inspecting it I noticed a very fine slit in the cast iron housing across almost half of the housing, just like someone had cut it with a thin power tool. I determined what had happened was this. In the winter they spread a salt/sand mixture over the pavement of this site. And it's a lot of pavement. I figured that all those years of that sand mixed in with the water, had actually cut through that cast iron housing. Where yours is plastic, I bet you may have had something similar happen. I also remember years ago, I would pump water out of an irrigation ditch to water some property that sat a little higher. One day I noticed the output of the pump was much less than usual. I finally had to shut it off, and tear it apart to see what was going on. The first thing I noticed was the window screen I had tied around the 2 inch pick up pipe was gone, so I figured the pump had sucked up something. I got it apart and could barely turn the impeller. Then I noticed something wedged between the impeller and the back housing. I started trying to get it out. Guess what it was. A water snake, or at least the remains of a water snake. That thing was so wrapped around that impeller, It took me an hour to get it cleaned out. Them pumps can do some strange things sometimes.

Boo, enjoy your 3 days off. I hope you can get some rest.

I am dealing with some gout in my ankle this week. Miserable stuff. Oh well, at least I am still able to walk. Often times it gets so bad I end up on crutches. I just walk like Chester currently. Goober would be proud of me.

The contractor who did the new water line is using a sub to do the concrete, and that isn't going so well. The economy here is booming right now, and the construction business is very busy. His sub has said he will get to it as soon as he can, but no promises when that might be. Oh well, That's life, through and through.
