March 18, 2020 - Msg 113967: Good Wednesday morning porch!

Checking in from work this morning. I am A Ok as is my family. I plan to keep working in my office until something changes. My office colleagues and I work to keep things as sanitized as possible. we clean door knobs, use alcohol wipes, wash our hands between sessions and use lysol spray. Our clients sit a good distance from us in our offices and we are nor shaking hands and refrain from any physical contact. Many of my clients have ocd/anxiety issues so it is making them
struggle more. Many insur#nce companies are allowing telephonic sessions for now so I will do that when possible. Our particular region/area has only 1 confirmed case, the individual had traveled out of the country and self isolated since their return. I am trying to be proactive and not panic!

A big stress is around the panic at the grocery stores. Guess that is going on everywhere.

No much else to report from my end of the porch. Everyone stay well and lay low. :)

Lunch menu will be: homemade chicken pot pie. salad. blackberry cobbler with vanilla ice cream for dessert. tea or sodas to drink.

everyone had a blessed day
prayers and blessings

March 18, 2020 - Msg 113970: Good morning, porch! How is everyone? Nobody sick, I hope? Trinket and I are well, just staying here in our house, minding our own business. I've ordered a dozen Birdseye diapers (remember those?) to be cut into smaller pieces and used for hygiene if necessary. My washer and dryer work well, and I have plenty of detergent and bleach on hand. For those of us who still have small kids around (grandkids, nieces and nephews, etc.) now is the time to teach them that they don't need a wad of paper as big as their head, a few squares will do. This applies at all times, not just now. I remember my first encounter with a restroom in Beijing on the first Mongolia trip. A grim-faced Chinese woman stood at the door, doling out TP as we entered, because there was none in the facility. None. Nada. Get it from her or do without. (Being forewarned, we did have a flattened roll tucked in our handbags.) I'm glad we did, because she was handing out two (that's 2) squares per person. Of course, we learned that simple gravity helped out a little, as we had to straddle a 2 ft x 8 in opening in the floor, nicely framed in porcelain. For a more complicated need, there was a little walled-off cubbyhole in a corner, with a proper "throne" inside, but no TP dispenser there either, or so we were told. So, we think we've got troubles???

Our "Ring" cameras have sparked a neighborhood connection, linked by a website, where we can post pictures of suspicious people who approach our homes, we've gotten several pictures of people actually stealing packages off of porches, lost dogs are posted and later located and returned, or "found" dogs are claimed, needs are shared and filled, etc. It's turned into a pretty neat thing. However, we have a few little snowflakes in the area who are just really thrown by this virus thing. One young mom posted that she was "almost out of disposable diapers and wipeys" for her two babies, and what was she to do? Another is wailing that she is out of bottled water and so is the store and now what? Good grief. After making sure she does have a washer and dryer (I didn't, for a while, with my first baby, but I had a scrub board and a bathtub!) I told her that Amazon is still well stocked on cloth diapers, which can be used as intended, and can be cut into smaller pieces to be used as "wipeys" and then washed. Just add a tad of bleach to the water and rinse well. As for the bottled water, boil some if she must for the babies, and as for her, she could drink out of the garden hose if it came to that, but the tap at the sink will work even better. I used to drink from the faucet that filled the horse trough, for cryin' out loud! I will still drink from the hose in the yard when I'm working out there. Just let it run a minute to be sure you don't drink a wasp or a bee!

These young'uns today laugh at us old folks when we struggle with our phones or computers (for a little while, anyway, and then we catch up) but the shoe is on the other foot at a time like this. They have no clue how to survive without all their conveniences. Poor little things! (teehee) My own granddaughter, on the other hand, texted me last night that she wasn't worried. She said when their supply of TP ran out, she'd just "squirt off with the hose, like we do with Wiley (her dog). She would, too!

Well, guess I'll go survey the little dishes of leftovers in the fridge, choose one or two, and have a little lunch. Blessings, everyone! Stay well! --Romeena

March 18, 2020 - Msg 113971:

Hope you are all well. I have had a cold and mild cough so am afraid someone will run screaming from me if I go anywhere. I haven't been anywhere except work, though, just lots of stress here at home.
Things were going fairly well with Erin but then we had some serious issues come up yesterday so we did a random drug test on her and thankfully, nothing terrible showed up but she has some major, major behavioral and mental issues. She has been seeing a good counselor that is also helping us on the side so she suggested a behavioral hospital for Erin but we are calling everything in the area and they wont accept her unless she is suicidal or homicidal right now and none of them are long-term unless you are under 18. I have to try and help her somehow. She talks about being in so much pain that she wants to die. There is a behavioral hospital in corpus that does outpt work. I have heard its good so that is probably the way we will go. In the meantime, the car is getting taken away and she will be mainly here at home unless supervised. If she refused to do what we are asking to help herself, she will have to leave but the car belongs to us and she wont get it. I think we have her where we want her. Anyway, its a rough place to be in right now because she has become dependent on marijuana to make herself feel better. I know you pray for us, and that means everything. In your prayers please ask for wisdom, guidance, grace and strength. I have seen poor bruce cry twice in the last 24 hours and its hard to see. He just lost his mother and now dealing with Erin and having to work extra. I cant go into detail about what she has done but she did break the law so there is that to deal with. God help us. So, I haven't been thinking much about the coronavirus since day before yesterday which is a plus. lol Its good to live in a small town because you feel the effects and fear less. Most business here are still operating, just under different hours or most restraunts are doing drive through only. I have plenty of food here and am good on TP for now. Walmart looks like a wasteland, I hear, though I haven't been in a week and it was good then. This TP thing is really strange, isn't it? What do people think our anc*stors did? I have my own theory about it. I think when people are afraid and feel out of control they somehow think hoarding TP is something they can do. lol Thanks for the prayers in advance, and know I am praying for my porch family ,too..stay safe.

The county health officials just put us on what is called shelter in. That means only leave the house for food and medicine for me. I have extra food here at the house. When I have been going shopping I pick up a few extra items. Now just have to wait and pray that this does not last to long.
Everyone be safe and stay healthy out there.

March 18, 2020 - Msg 113976: I didn't know that about the earthquake. I tend not to watch the news much, it's too depressing. I have a few well-chosen websites from which to get the local and national news, and filter out the fake news. That's getting harder to do, there's so much of it.

I just tried to place a call to Asa, and got no answer. That's a little scary, but I don't want to jump to conclusions. He could be napping, or just run down to gas up the car, or maybe trying to find some TP! Check in, Asa, we're concerned about you and Debbie.

Well, guess I'll go get back in my chair, and get Trinket on my lap. She has been asking for an hour now, and she's been a good girl, so I think we'll cuddle for a while. Boo, I'm so sorry you're still having to deal with Erin's problems. I wish I could help. Blessings! --Romeena

March 18, 2020 - Msg 113978: Hey all. Thanks for the prayers and concern. We are fine here. Been dealing with power phone and internet problems all day. And many many aftershocks. No damage at my place, but I was sure worried for about 30 seconds this morning. We have had a few earthquakes here over the years but this one was by far the largest I remember. The epicenter was in a small town called Magna that is about 40 miles south of me. But this was felt in Southern Idaho and into Rock Springs Wyoming they said. Anyway, all is well. Nothing like a ground shaker to take your mind off of the virus news.
Romeena, I guess your call never got through to me. But the phone and internet has been in and out all day as you can imagine. Thanks for all your prayers friends.
They are suggesting we pack our vehicles with 72 hour kits and park the car outside of the garage tonight just in case. Makes a lot of sense. We have kits already put together so I just need to get them in Libby. She will feel very picked on having to be outside all night though. lol
GF, you asked in an earlier post how I was managing, we placed on order with Walmart for groceries on Saturday, they delivered yesterday afternoon. I got almost half of everything we ordered so I am happy about that. Because I know the panic buying just got reignited here in a big way. Crazy stuff going on.
And I spent some time today checking in on some elderly widows in our church, just to see if they were ok. They were. They all have families close by who take good care of them.
Possum, thanks for the holler. I was wondering if you was gonna stay under that Rock till the virus passed by. lol

Bo, sorry to read that about Erin. I will keep your family in my prayers for sure. It seems like we all have so much on our plates right now. Hang in there girl.

Frankie, I hope you are ok. Good idea to hang low. I have only been out twice in two weeks and those were both trips to the dentist dealing with a root canal. Should have one final one next Monday. And I need to pick up some prescriptions on Friday. That should be all the running around I need to do.

Well off to load up Libby.
Prayers for all.

March 19, 2020 - Msg 113984: Hello all! I'm sure that we have all studied American and World History, and as I see this whole thing, it is like we are suddenly living in the time of the Depression and WWII all rolled into one! Now we KNOW what it was like for our anc@stors to have lived thru both of those calamities, only they lived thru YEARS of hardship, bread lines, food rationing, material rationing, shortages of all kind. So..., THIS is OUR depression, OUR WWII, but it will hopefully only last a few months. NOW we know why those anc@stors of ours are referred to as the Greatest generation... Because they WERE! :)
The Bible does tell us of a time such as this, and that those who hold out to the end will be saved. (Matt.24) This is just a small taste of what the great tribulation will be like. The Salt Lake earthquake got me to thinking about all this. I'm not saying that this IS the start of the tribulation, but it is sure something to think about, pray about, and discern in our lives.
ASA--thanks for checking in. I sure hope you dont have to evacuate, but please check in when you can. BOO, prayers for sure. FRankie, good for you, I am stopping by our church's side chapel as much as i can. (It is still open.) Possum, keep safe.

Thankfully the aftershocks have settled down here so I can focus all my worries back on the virus. (sorry, trying to inject some humor also GF)
Believe it or not I have never eaten at Chic-Fil-A. Not a purposeful boycott or anything. But they only had one store in my area and it was not located in a place that I ever went to. Now that I am retired I was just thinking about going to give them a try and then this virus thing hit. So it won't be for a while I reckon.

PappaBear, HA, Loved your two chair comment about Floyd. Of all the rotten luck. Only thing worse would be if there was a magazine shortage and he no longer had the magazines to swing it. :)

MDC, You are so right with your analogy Brother. I have often wondered how we as a society today would do if we faced what our parents did. With what I have seen so far I'd say we ain't looking good. My hope and prayer is that if things get worse, maybe folks will learn more compassion and act like somebody. I heard the newly elected Mayor of Salt Lake City yesterday in a news conference pleading with folks, following the earthquake and with all the virus stuff going on, to please use some grace and compassion in their life. I really appreciated her expressions concerning that. We are all in this together, lets play nice, be nice, all for one, one for all. We will see.

Wow Possum, 86? We are half that today here with a light drizzle. I hope you are right that the summer temps will stop this stuff.

March 20, 2020 - Msg 114001: Amen GF. It seems very bleak these days until you remember who is reporting. Sensationalism seems to be the order of the day. The media seems to take delight in painting as bleak a picture as they can. I just saw a clip of President Trump ripping into an nbc reporter when he asked a snarky question. Dang, it was refreshing to hear. But you are so right GF. I had my Bishop call me last night asking if we needed anything at all. They were all set up and organized to go buy groceries, or medications, or anything else that high risk folks might need. And that was after 3 or 4 calls from other neighbors all week asking if we needed anything. I do think and hope in due time the cream will rise to the top GF. Amen?

MDC, Thanks for your prayers for us. I had not heard about the day of prayer. Somehow our news folk missed that story. We appreciate it buddy.
I think I saw that same episode with Mr. Tucker. Was it the one where he was trying to buy a old woman's house and she ended up poisoning him because she new he was her sons killer? I bet Emma would have loved that episode. I see that actor on quite a few A.H. shows. I also see Barbara Bel Geddes in quite a few. She played Miss Ellie on Dallas.

Well I already paid my taxes. But that's ok. Like the old Fram oil filter commercial says, "You can pay me now, or you can pay me later". 10-4 GF?

I saw "Family Visit" this morning. I love that episode. The way Ollie is flopped out in that bed and poor old Andy has about 12 inches to lay on. And the argument between Ollie and Nora about the goose down pillow with Andy wedged in between them. Funny stuff. "You know what they say about skinny widders Andy"/ lol

Well off to rustle up some supper. Where's Peggy when I need her? lol

PB--regarding Thelma Lou's job, I THINK it is mentioned in an ep that she is an office worker, but not where. July 2045 for filing taxes, huh? Sounds good to me cuz I probably wont be around then! ha

ASA, very cool about your bishop, etc. If we (the US pop.) had all done what your church does in storing some things, i think most of the panic buying would not have happened. I can still remember how my mom stored can goods in a back closet in the '50s because of the a-bomb scare. Not sure tho if 'duck and cover' would have helped much, much less some irradiated can goods ! ha
ASA, yes, that is the AH ep that I saw last night. When he picked up the phone I was waiting for him to say, "Hello ladies, this is Malcolm Tucker." ha
Now, in 'normal' life, and if the Ollie ep did not need a story line,
Nora and Ollie could have used Andy's bed, Andy could have used Opie's bed, and the 2 boys could have slept in the living room! problem solved. ha
Frankie, my grass could use some cutting too, just sayin'. :)
Keep safe everyone. I'm heading back to the grocery store tomorrow!

March 21, 2020 - Msg 114010: Rest In Peace, Kenny Rogers. He passed away last night at the age of 81.

A little story- back in the 70's, when those big console stereos became popular, our family purchased one for our den. The furniture store threw in two 8 track tapes (LOL)- one was Engelbert Humperdinck (sp?) and the other was Kenny Rogers and the First Edition. Any guesses as to which was this young teen's favorite?

"Ruby Don't Take Your Love to Town", "Reuben James" beat the pants off of "Quando, Quando, Quando"!! Fell in love with that unique husky sound that was Kenny Rogers and have loved him since. I hope he is singing away in Heaven- Rest in peace and thank you for the music, Kenny.

March 21, 2020 - Msg 114013: Good morning everyone. I hope and pray you are all well and have some peace of mind.

We are getting better. I think I failed to mention in my last post that I quit my job. It took several things coming together to bring me to that point but when Erin went into crisis mode I had no choice and that forced me to close that chapter in my life. I know after this all blows over there will be something else for me to do. I have to be here now and this is my first calling, to my family. It made me sad to leave and I cried some because I truly loved the job on many points, but as you all know, it was becoming unbearable and I couldn't trust the current admin to protect the employees or the residents.

Erin is depressed but not off the charts like 2 days ago. We are always together because we took the car from her and with the current virus threat we all spend more time together. When I took her to be screened for the outpt treatment program, we were told they accepted her but now they have closed they have closed the program due to the virus. She was pretty discouraged by that but timing is everything and God knows best. Again, thank you for your prayers and know I am praying for you too.

Possum, have you heard Michael Buble's version of Quando? Pretty good.

Just wanted to check in. We are all well for now but with so many in our household I don't think odds are in our favor to avoid the virus altogether. Impossible to keep everyone home at this point. Bruce, Sean, and one of the girls we have here living with us are still working and two are in fairly close contact with the public.

Peace and good health,
Boo

March 21, 2020 - Msg 114014: lol GF. 0 TO 60 in an hour and a half if going downhill and if capturing a good tail wind. HA, My very first car was a 59 Chevy Biscayne. I think just the rear fin had more steel in it than an entire car does today. lol It had a 283 V8 with automatic tranny. The first thing I did was to buy a conversion kit from J.C. Whitney that moved the shifter from the steering column down to the floor. I mean driving an automatic was bad enough, but at least give me a floor shifter. The only thing more worse would be the old three on the tree. 10-4 GF? LOL And I could not afford chrome rims, so I painted my rims with silver spray paint. You could only tell they weren't chrome if you looked real close. lol I'm sure my Dad must have been shaking his head and muttering to himself "and to think I was proud when you learned how to drive". :)

I loved Kenney's ballads. And when he teamed up with Dolly to do Gibbs "Island in the stream", why it was pure gala.

GF, When you mentioned John Denver, I think his first big hit was "Country Roads" if I'm not mistaken. I may have mentioned this before, so forgive me if so, but the song was written by a feller named Bill Danoff. Denver liked it so much, he put a few of his own little touches on it and recorded it, with Danoff, and Danoffs wife Taffy singing back up. Bill and Taffy Danoff later teamed up with another couple and formed the group "Starland Vocal Band" and had a huge hit song "Afternoon Delight". Intersting huh? lol I sound like Kasey Kasem don't I. I better quit. Music knowledge is a fine thing but I ought not flaunt it. :)

Possum, I can almost envision your Den with the green shag carpet and dark brown wood simulated paneling? lol Ours was. Plus the suspended ceiling. My Dad hid the stereo speakers up above the ceiling and I thought that was the most coolest thing ever. Ha!

MDC, I also love the scene at the breakfast table when Ollie slams his hand down on the table and says "Nora, you know what I'm thinking"? and the camera goes on Andy who has this look of fear come over him as he seems to know what Ollie is about to declare. Oh my, just the face of fear Andy exhibits is priceless.

Pappabear, One of our local radio stations was broadcasting Christmas music for 3 hours last night. And I see that Hallmark went to showing Christmas movies all weekend, just to try and calm folks down. I hope it works. And I join MDC in thaning you for your service.

Sarah, Organizing your Hubby's shoes? Wow, what a good wife you are. It got me to thinking about my own shoes. I initially thought I only had a couple of pair, but then I started calculating and realized I'm as bad as any woman. I have my main pair of sneakers, and then an older pair I wear when working in the yard, another pair I wear when working out on the treadmill. A pair of nice dress shoes for preaching. Two pairs of work boots that I rarely wear now. And I bet if I looked I'd find yet another pair of old sneakers in the bottom of my closet. Oh, and a pair of snow boots in the garage. I'm a glutton! lol

Frankie, I hope they get to playing baseball soon again for your sake. I know how you enjoy your baseball.

I hope Romeena is ok. She has been quiet for a while. Please check in Ro.

Prayers for all of us.

Asa

March 21, 2020 - Msg 114015: You snuck in on me Boo. I don't know why, but I had a sense of peace come over me when I read you had quit Shoreline. As you said, Gods timing is perfect and maybe He sees you needing to be there for Erin at this critical time. Prayers for you all.

March 21, 2020 - Msg 114017: Yes Asa, I know that story too. I got to see them twice when I went to John Denver concerts. They toured with him for a few years as his opening act before they went out on their own. I don’t believe Bill & Taffy are together anymore. I saw her in a interview after John passed she told the story....

Boo...Maybe quitting that place was the right thing to do...Stay Strong and Good Luck and Prayers 🙏

G-F....p.s. Proud of you MDC...You May need a tool belt after this...lol

March 21, 2020 - Msg 114018: Good morning, porch! It's gray, cloudy and COLD here, doggone it! I was hoping it would warm up to the high 70s-low 80s, which theoretically the virus doesn't like and can't survive for long. But no-o-o-o, Texas has to show off and be cold! It's 45° here this morning!! Meantime, the weeds that Eddie would have cleaned out over a week ago are just grinnin' and growin', as Eddie says, thanks to over a week of rain. From my window I can see a couple of dandelion plants that are nearly three feet tall, and may need an axe to bring them down! They're right in the middle of an iris bed, and though the irises are trying valiantly, and are blooming, they're obscured by the weeds. It's sort of a picture of our world today. Good vs evil! Grrr!

Well, Trinket impressed me this morning. We slept late (why not, we can't go anywhere!) and just as we were getting up, she started to bark and scratch at the bedroom door. Without my hearing aids in place, I had heard nothing, so of course I had no idea why she was barking. I told her to hush, because since the alarms had not gone off I knew no one was in the house, but she kept whining. I spent about ten minutes getting ready to meet the day, and when I opened the bedroom door, she was out like a shot. She checked every room to which she has access, still whining and acting concerned. She kept going to the front door. So, I got my phone and checked the front porch, and sure enough, there was a clip of a young FedEx driver leaving a couple of packages on the porch. He also appeared to be ringing the doorbell, but I never heard it, back in that far back bedroom, door closed, and my aids still on their charger. I unlocked the door, brought the packages in, and Trinket was satisfied. Dadburn it, she just KNEW there had been someone here, and she wanted me to check it out! She may turn out to be worth her kibble yet. My big, bold, rowdy girl!

I just talked with my sister-in-law, to see how they're faring. My brother is a designing jeweler, makes most of the jewelry he sells, all original pieces. He has won awards across the country, and makes some absolutely stunning jewelry. He was almost at a standstill, because he can't buy any distilled water, of all things! He uses a steamer in the process of making the jewelry, to clean the pieces, and the steamer uses distilled water. They couldn't find any, anywhere. Then a longtime friend happened in, heard the story, and said he had a case of distilled water he had bought for another purpose but didn't really need, and gave it to my brother. You gotta love it!

You know what? Some of the fallout from this virus thing may turn out to be a blessing in disguise. I'm sorry for the illness and the loss of life, but there may be a plus side in other lives. Some of the "snowflakes" may just be surprised, if they have to dig down deep into themselves and actually help themselves. They may find strength and resources or resourcefulness they didn't know they had. Growth sometimes is painful (remember the "growing pains" in your legs when you were a kid?) but it's worth it in the long run. Those snowflakes will appreciate their new-found strength and resourcefulness some day.

Well, off I go. I don't know where, or why, but it seems like I should be doing something. Blessings, friends. --Romeena

March 21, 2020 - Msg 114019: Hey, Boo. You sneaked in on me there, while I was writing my little entry above, which I started about three hours ago, but got interrupted by the phone! I'm so very glad to hear that you quit that job. I know it had its redeeming qualities for you, but I don't think they outweighed the downside. Now with this virus threat, you were really exposed to danger, and I for one am glad you're out of there. God knows what He's doing, and He's got something else in mind for you right now. I think probably Erin figures in His plan in a big way. Prayers for you and yours, my sister. --Romeena

March 21, 2020 - Msg 114020: Anyone notice that in "Malcolm at the Crossroads, Andy was absolutely staunch and put his foot down about Ernest T. Bass and Malcolm fighting? But in "Howard's Main Event", he was pretty lax on Howard and Clyde fighting? I know he might've been protecting Malcolm from Ernest T., but he actually supported Howard facing Clyde?

Stay well out there!

March 22, 2020 - Msg 114022: Hey folks! Just checking in on everybody....being going back and reading all the recent comments to make sure folks are okay. Thanks for asking about me, Papa Bear.

I've been working all week. We've gone to alternating weeks at work so I should be working from home next week....until that plan changes.

I've been seeing all these entertainers on Facebook singing and stuff. I think "Floyd" may have to go live and sing "Hail to thee Miss Mayberry" for everybody. :)

Y'all stay safe and well.

March 22, 2020 - Msg 114023: BOO--I have heard that the odds of any of us (non-precondition) people are worse than winning the lottery jackpot! I'm not saying it's not possible, but just wanted to put it in perspective for you. I will continue to pray for shoreline. I hope no one there gets infected!
My fav Kenny R song was "Mary Did You Know." It carried such profound lyrics! :) I will miss not going to church this week and for who knows how long, but I also know that God hears our prayer from anywhere.
ASA--I used to order from the JC Whitney catalog all the time for car stuff. Forgot all about them! Also, I bet both you and GF (and maybe Spot) all had some Red Wings at one time or another! :) Wow GF, i get a toolbelt! Aren't ya kind, aren't ya kind! :)
RO--glad to hear that trinket got the 'lard' out for ya and alerted you to the delivery! Sounds like she may be worth her kibble indeed! :)
HEY to Floyd! Thanks for checking in. We really appreciate you building this porch for us! God bless you and yours.
Has anyone heard from Poor Horatio at all? I sure hope he is OK.
Hi John M. Andy seemed to change in the later episodes. I think he really missed Don Knotts.
Well, I hope ya all can find some televised preaching tomorrow. I know Spot used to when in the control room on Sundays. :)
Good Sabbath,
MDC
